UNIT 8: NEW WAYS TO LEARN

LESSON 5: LISTENING

Blended Learning

I. Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, students are able to:

1. Knowledge:

- Gain an overview about the topic Blended Learning

- Memorize vocabulary to talk about blended learning

2. Skills:

- Develop listening skills: listen for specific details

- Be collaborative and supportive in pair work and teamwork;

- Develop presentation skills;

- Actively join in class activities.

3. Attitudes:

- Acknowledge and be able to apply the tips on listening tasks

- Develop self-study skills.

II. Teaching aids: textbook, PowerPoint slides, laptop, TV, board, chalk

Time: 45 minutes

III. Teaching procedure


1. Warm-up:( 5 minutes)
a. Aim:
- To make the class lively and get students thinking about blended learning;
- To set the context for the listening part;
- To help students work better together.
b. Input/ Content:
Review the previous lessons:
c. Procedure:
*Activity 1: Review previous lessons
- Teacher reviews lesson 3 and 4 (Reading and Speaking)
- Teacher asks Ss to answer the question: How many ways to learn that we have learnt?

(Suggested Answer: 2 ways: online learning and face-to-face learning)
- Teacher explains to show the word: blended learning
*Activity 2: Watch a short video
- Teacher shows a short video
- Teacher asks Ss to answer the question “What is blended learning ?”
(Suggested Answer: Blended learning means that combines traditional classroom
lessons with lessons that use computer technology.)
d.Outcome:
- Students can understand the topic we will learn today
2. Pre-Listening (10 minutes)
*Task 1. Work in pairs. Tick () what you often do to prepare before a new
lesson.
a. Aim:
- To provide students with vocabulary for the following listening task
b. Input/ Content:
- Task 1: Work in pairs. Tick () what you often do to prepare before a new lesson.
c. Procedure:
- Invite some Ss to read out loud the questions and tell what we will do in the task.
- Teacher checks the understanding
- Teacher asks Ss to work in pairs in 30s
- Teacher invites some Ss to share their answers with the class.
d. Outcome
- Ss can identify and list common preparation activities they engage in before a new
lesson.
*Vocabulary
a. Aim:
- To get students learn vocabulary related to the topic.
b. Input/Content:
- Teacher teaches vocabulary related to the content of the lesson
c. Procedure:

to copy or move programs or information to a larger computer
system or to the internet
- Teacher shows a sentence and ask Ss to guess the meaning
Suggested Question: I usually upload my pictures on Facebook
Suggested Answer: upload means post or put on Facebook

- Teacher shows the tress, pronunciation
- Teacher calls Ss to read aloud and pick some Ss to read again

a system for classification and product description
- Teacher tells Ss the name that we can learn on the Internet
- Teacher explains and introduce the word: Eclass
- Teacher points out the stress, pronunciation
- Teacher shows the meaning
- Ss read again that word
=> After learning all of words, teacher asks Ss make a sentence with learned-new
words.
3. While-Listening (20 minutes)
a. Aim
To provide students with useful steps to do before listening for specific information
b. Input/ Content
- Task 2: Listen to the first part of the conversation between a teacher and her students,
then answer the following questions.
- Task 3: Listen to the second part of the conversation and complete the flowchart with
no more than TWO words.
c. Procedure
*Task 2. Listen to the first part of the conversation between a teacher and her
students, then answer the following questions. (10 mins)
- Teacher asks a student read the question and explain what we will do in this task.
- Teacher shows some tips in listening task
- Ss underline the key words in each question.

- Ss listen twice to answer the question
- Teacher calls some Ss answer
- Teacher checks and shows the answer
Answer key:
1. She is talking about the homework given to the class.
2. She has uploaded videos on the E-Class.
*Task 3. Listen to the second part of the conversation and complete the flowchart
with no more than TWO words. (10 minutes)
- Teacher asks a student read the question and explain what we will do in this task.
- Ss underline the key words in each question.
- Teacher organizes Lucky Number Game.
- Ss join and answer these questions.
- Teacher checks the answer.

4. Post-Reading (7 minutes)
a. Aim:

Discussion: Which is more effective: blended or traditional learning? Why?
c. Procedure:
- Teacher asks Ss to work in groups of four.
- Teacher gives each group a A4 paper to write down the idea.
- Each group discusses the question and write the idea
- Groups have 3 minutes to prepare for performance.
- Teacher invites 1 or 2 Ss representing the groups to come to the stage and talk.
- Other groups submit papers to teacher.
- Teacher gives feedback and give some gifts.
d. Outcome:
- Students can use the language and ideas from the unit to share the ideas.
5. CONSOLIDATION (3 mins)
a. Wrap-up
- Teacher asks Ss to talk about what they have learnt in the lesson.
