academics and Gertrude's mother's displeasure prevented their passion from
blossoming.

Conversely, Rizal's childhood girlfriend and Calamba neighbor was Adelina Torens.
Since they were little children, they had been close friends, and with time, their
friendship turned passionate. However, they were split up because Rizal's family
disapproved of their union. Rizal continued to be fond of Adelina and devoted several of
his compositions to her even after she married another man.
