Online Examination Guidance Notes

It is your responsibility to read and understand the University regulations regarding assessment.
This information can be found at: http://www.hud.ac.uk/registry/regulationsandpolicies/studentregs.

Please pay special attention to the assessment regulations (section 4) on Academic Misconduct

In brief: ensure that you:

1. DO NOT use the work of another student - this includes students from previous years and other
institutions, as well as current students on the module.
2. DO NOT make your work available or leave insecure, for other students to view or use.
3. Further guidance can be found in the SCEN Academic Skills Resource and UoH Academic Integrity
Resource module in Brightspace.

Exam papers will be downloadable from Brightspace at 8AM British Summer Time (BST) (GMT +1hr) on the
day of the exam. You will then have 24 hours in which to complete the paper, prepare and format your
exam script, and then upload it to the “Online exam” submission point in Brightspace by 8AM British
Summer Time (BST) (GMT +1hr) on the next day.

It is up to you how much time you spend on the assessment but we recommend you spend approximately
the same amount of thinking time for this alternative assessment as you would have in the exam, this is the
“Suggested nominal time” shown on the first page of the exam paper. You may need to use some extra time
on top of the suggested nominal time to put your work in a format that is required for digital submission. So,
as a general guide, you should consider using approximately double the suggested nominal exam time for
these assessments. It is also up to you when or for how long in the 24 hour window you work on the
assessment.

"Open-book" means that you can use any resources you wish to complete the exam. All submissions will
be automatically similarity checked through Turnitin and your work should be entirely your own (see your
responsibilities above). You are not expected to provide references for your sources but you may if you
wish.

In general, existing past papers will still be appropriate for you to prepare for your online exams and these
can be found on Brightspace. This document is intended to guide you through and give you practice at
preparing an online exam script and uploading it to Brightspace. We would suggest that you select past
paper questions to use for the purposes of practicing the process described here. This process is intended
for your own purposes and will not be systematically monitored by staff, but if you have any issues you
should ask for advice.

The process
 You can download and read the exam paper thoroughly. Also download the blank answer script
template provided along with question paper and use it to answer questions.
 You must write Module name and code on the first page of the answer script and each question
should be clearly numbered in line with the exam paper.
 Where possible, you are asked to type and use equation editor to answer the questions, where this
is not practical you may write them by hand. Where diagrams, sketches and charts etc. are required
you may use a graphics package you are familiar with or draw them by hand.
 All hand drawn or written elements (equations, graphs etc) should be scanned or photographed
(captured) and imported as an image into your word document in the appropriate place.
 All images must have your student number in the top right-hand corner.
 “Scanning apps” are available for mobile phones and devices but simple images work well so long as
their size is managed. Images can be transferred to your computer in a number of ways: blue tooth,
cable connection, Wi-Fi and email.
 The Brightspace file size upload limit is 40MB, this should allow between 50-80 captured images and
this should be sufficient.
 You must not put your name anywhere in the body of the answer script or in the title. Your exam
paper will be marked anonymously.
 Your student number must be typed or handwritten on the top of each page of answer script.
 When you have completed your answer script and it contains all the elements of: typing, equation
editor and captured sheets sections, you should save it as both a word file and a pdf and upload both
to the “ONLINE EXAM” submission point in the Brightspace module from where you downloaded this
document.
 The submission point will be formatted to allow you to view your upload directly in Brightspace and
Turnitin. You should use this opportunity to check that your document has uploaded correctly and
that all pages are clear and readable.
 You must upload completed answer script (both WORD and PDF files) within 24 hours from the
starting time of exam.
