Target

Communication is a process of sharing or exchanging ideas, thoughts or

information through verbal or non-verbal manner between individuals.
Communication can be done through different medium or channel. It is a
transactional process which requires more comprehensive consideration for the
specific context, individual, society forces and culture.

In our daily life, communication is very important. It can shape behaviour,

strengthen or erode relationship and it can create social and political change.
Communication is a process, inevitable, irreversible, and can be verbal and
nonverbal.

In your past lesson, you are done with the four main goals of communication
which are to inform, request, persuade and build relationship. You have also learned
that communication is for expressing one’s needs and wants, transferring or
conveying information, and establishing social closeness with others. Ultimately, the
goal of all communication is to change behaviour so people further read new books
or seek help to understand things or reality. Meanwhile, the scope of communication
is wide and pervasive.

Timely, this learning material will provide you with information and activities that
will help you understand the nature/characteristics and the seven principles of
communication.

After going through this lesson, you are expected to:

explain the principles of communication (HUMSS_DIASS12-1h-29)

Before proceeding, check on how much you know about this topic.
Answer the activity on the next page in a separate sheet of paper.

Nature/Characteristics and Principles of Communication

Communication is essential to human life. It is a vital element in varied
disciplines because of its richness in scope and extent of its application. According
to Schurman, it is a tool that makes society possible and distinguishes human from
other societies.

Communication is a process, because it involves several stages when the

sender and the receiver interact in a given social context. The interaction is dynamic
in nature, there is no single aspect of communication that can be understood without
the other elements. Communication is inevitable, since as we wake up in the
morning, we begun to talk with our family, to our friends and to other people around
us. Sometimes, we even communicate when we are asleep or when we are alone.
Being in silence is also a form of communication, facial expression, tone of voice as
well as our clothing style, conveys a message. Remember, communication has two
kinds - the verbal (35%) and nonverbal (65%).

Communication always results in something. It is irreversible, what we say

can never be taken back or withdrawn. We can clarify or re-state, but the impact on
the receiver may not be fully disappear. Communication can also be understood in
many possible senses or ways which depend on the context, culture, relationship,
society, message and the medium which are all part of the communication process.
Communication produce, transmit and receive meaningful symbolic messages in an
environment such as family, school, church, office and other social institutions.

One of the primary goal of communication is understanding and to achieve

this, everyone must know/understand the following principles of communication:

1. Principle of Clarity

The idea or message should be expressed clearly. Use simple and specific
words in expressing ideas so that the receiver understands the same thing which the
sender wants to convey. There should be no ambiguity in the message. It should be
kept in mind that the words do not speak for themselves, but the speaker gives them
the meaning. A clear message will evoke the same response from the other party. It
is also essential that the receiver is conversant with the language used in the
conversation.

2. Principle of Attention

This relies on how the receiver’s attention should be drawn towards the
message. People have different behaviour/emotion and perception on something, so
they may respond differently to the message. Another thing is that, if the receiver

3
didn’t give much attention on what the speaker is saying or doing, misunderstanding
might happen.

3. Principle of Feedback

Feedback is very important in the communication process, it serves as the

indication and an assurance that the receiver understands the message of the sender
in the same sense in which the sender has meant it.

4. Principle of Informality

This principle is also an essential key in communication because it can build

calmness, comfort and rapport with the people involved in the conversation.
Conversations vary in form; it is either formal or informal. The kind of conversation
to be used should depend on the background of the receiver or the audience, (race,
education, status, etc.) as well as the place and time.

Sometimes formal communication may not achieve the desired results,

informal communication may prove effective in such situations. So this principle
states that informal communication is as important as formal communication.

5. Principle of Consistency

This states that communication should always be consistent with the policies,
etiquettes and objectives of the sender.

6. Principle of Timeliness

This principle states that communication should be done in a proper time,

proper place and with appropriate topic.

7. Principle of Adequacy

The information in the communication process should be adequate and

complete in all aspects. Hence, communication should include everything that the
receiver needs to hear from him/her to respond, react, or evaluate properly as well
as for taking proper decisions and plans.

Inadequate information may delay action, create confusion and affects the
efficiency of the receiver.
