2013 PRACTICAL ASSESSMEN TASK FOR GRADE 10

GUIDELINES FOR TEACHERS

Requirements for the Practical Assessment Task in Tourism grade 10

 The PAT in tourism should comply with the requirements for a project
 Learners should present different but similar tasks. In grade 10 each learner will produce a brochure
about tourism in their own province, but all the brochures will be different.
 The PAT is open ended, and it is not possible to provide a memo for assessment. The rubrics
provided should have clear criteria for assessment
 Questions suitable for question papers or tests cannot be included in the PAT

Planning for the Practical Assessment Task in Tourism grade 10

 According to the CAPS, the Practical Assessment Task in Tourism has two phases. Learners must
complete phase one in term 2, and phase two in term 3
 Teachers should give the PAT to learners in term 2, as learners have a project to complete in term 1
 The teacher will provide resources. He/she may source it from the internet. Learners may access
additional resources
 The PAT is part of the final examination and should be managed as such
 It is suggested that the teacher gives a lesson about plagiarism to learners before they start with the
PAT. The teacher must be able to pick up plagiarism from the internet

Guidance to be provided by the teacher for grade 10

It is suggested that
 Each learner brings a plastic envelope large enough to hold the folded brochure, which is kept by the
teacher in a box in class
 The teacher divides each phase of the PAT into 6 sections
 Each double period for the next 6 weeks is then dedicated to the PAT for learners to work on the
PAT under supervision (in term 2 and again in term 3)
 The teacher explains one section at a time so that learners can understand what they should do
 Learners find information and prepare this section at home, which they bring to school for the
following double period
 They complete this section in class in the double period and place their brochure back in the
envelope in the box.
 This way, the teacher is able to ensure that every learner engages in the PAT, and that it is not left
for parents or other people to complete. Each learner will have a mark for the PAT, and no teacher
can come to the moderation with zero marks for some learners who will never hand in the PAT if left
to do it on their own.
 If a certain school allows learners to hand in electronic PATs, the work in the learner’s own
handwriting would be marked, and they can type it afterwards, hoping that it will come back…
