Homework 2: Kinematics Due Mon. Feb.

5
#1

The position vs. time graph below shows an object moving in a straight line for 3 seconds.
x (m)
20

10

t (s)
1 2 3

What is the position of the object 0.5 s after the start of the motion?

What is the position of the object 2 s after the start of the motion?

What is the object’s velocity during the first 1 s of motion?

What is the object’s velocity during the interval from t = 1 s to t = 2 s?

What is the object’s velocity during the interval t = 2 s to t = 2.5 s?

What is the object’s net displacement (x) for the entire trip?
#2

Consider the following graph of two contestants in a race.

x (km)
2

Key
1
A:
B:

t (min)
5 10 15
a. How long is the race in terms of distance?

b. Who wins, A or B?

c. What is the winner’s elapsed time?

d. Estimate the maximum speed A achieves, in m/s.

e. Estimate the maximum speed B achieves, in m/s.

f. What Aesop fable does this graph represent?

g. By extrapolation [i.e. neatly modifying the graph], estimate how long (in time) after the
race ends you would expect A to pass B and take the lead again.
#3

People used to talk about a “4-minute mile” as an unreachable achievement.

a. If you can run a mile in exactly 4 minutes, what is your speed in m/s?

b. At that (sustained) speed, what would your elapsed time be in a marathon, which
is 26 miles plus 385 yards?

#4

An electric vehicle starts from rest and accelerates at a rate of 4.0 m/s 2 in a straight line, reaching
a speed of 20 m/s. The vehicle then slows at a rate of –5 m/s2 until it stops.

Graph this motion (neatness counts) on a v vs. t graph. Labels and numbers
count!

How far does the vehicle travel from start to stop? Determine this from the graph,
and explain how you got it.
#5

A lion is chasing a gnu. The lion is running at 20 m/s; the gnu is going in a straight line at 15
m/s. If the gnu has a 25 m head start, how much time elapses before the lion catches the gnu?
You can solve this graphically or algebraically.

#6

An airplane touches down at 300 km/hr. Find the constant acceleration needed to stop the
airplane 1 km down the runway.
#7

When striking, a certain shark can reach a speed of 10 mph in 0.2 s (starting from rest).

What is the shark’s acceleration in m/s2?

How far does the shark move during this strike?

#8

After a traffic accident, it is determined (based on tire tracks) that a certain car slowed down over
a distance of 180 ft. while braking, coming to a complete stop. This type of car typically has a
maximum deceleration of –7.5 m/s2.

a. What was x, in meters?

b. Find the initial speed of the car in m/s.

c. Convert this speed to mph, showing the calculation. Should the driver receive a
speeding ticket? Assume the speed limit is 55 mph.
#9

A pitcher throws a ball straight upward at an initial speed of 40 m/s.

How high does the ball go?

Where is the ball after 1.0 s?

What is the ball’s velocity at t = 4.0 s?

When does the ball hit the ground?

#10

Starting from rest on your bike, you go in a straight line with a = 3 m/s2 for 10 seconds. Then
you pedal at constant velocity for another 8 s.

What’s your final velocity?

What is the total distance travelled?

Draw graphs of both position and velocity as function of time for the entire trip.
#11

A bank robber in 香港 (Hong Kong) is rescued from the ocean by grabbing onto a ladder
hanging from a helicopter that is ascending. However, she accidentally lets go of her briefcase
(full of rubies) when she is 125 m above the water. The briefcase hits the water 11 s later. At
what speed is the helicopter ascending? [Hint: find vi for the robber; this is also the helicopter’s
initial velocity. Also, watch the sign of y!]

#12

You’re driving down the road at 20 m/s. You apply the brakes and stop after 10 s of constant
acceleration. Graph both (a) your velocity and (b) your position, as functions of time. Neatness
counts. Be as accurate on the axes as you can (show values)
