Example 4 How many moles of aluminium sulphate are there in 26.4g of substance.

(Ar: Al = 27, S = 32, O = 16 )

SOLUTION
n=m Formula of aluminium sulfate = Al2(SO4)3
M

M for Al2(SO4)3= (27 x 2) + (32x3) + (16x12) = 54 +96 + 192 = 342 g/mol

n = 26.4
342
= 0.0772 mol of Al2(SO4)3

Example 5 Calculate the number of moles contained in the following:

a 7.1 g of chlorine atoms.
b 7.1 g of chlorine molecules
c 50 g of ammonium carbonate

Solutions
𝑔𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑛 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑚(𝑔)
5 a number of moles = in symbols; n = 𝑔
𝑚𝑜𝑙𝑎𝑟 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑀( )
𝑚𝑜𝑙
Chlorine atoms have the symbol or formula of Cl,
𝟕.𝟏𝒈
n for Cl = = 0.2 mol
𝟑𝟓.𝟓𝐠/𝐦𝐨𝐥

b Chlorine moles have the formula Cl2, hence M for Cl2 = 35.5 x 2 = 71 g/mol
𝑚(𝑔) 7.1 𝑔
n for Cl2 = n = 𝑔 = 𝑔 = 0.1 mol
𝑀( ) 71
𝑚𝑜𝑙 𝑚𝑜𝑙

c Formula for ammonium carbonate = (NH4)2CO3

M for (NH4)2CO3 = (14x2) + (1x8) + 12 + (16 x 3) = 28 + 8 + 12+ 48 = 96 g/mol
50𝑔
n for (NH4)2CO3 = 𝑔 = 0.521 mol
96

Example 6 Calculate the mass of 2.5 moles of carbon dioxide gas.

Solution
m=nxM M for CO2 = 12 + (16 x 2) = 12 + 32 = 44 g/mol
-1
m = 2.5 g mol x 44 g = 110 g
