CHROMATOGRAPHY: UNVEILING THE HIDDEN

COMPONENTS OF A MIXTURE

I. OBJECTIVES:

 To separate and identify the components of a mixture;

 determine how chromatography works;
 understand the principles of chromatography;
 elucidate what happen to the activity.

II. MATERIALS:

 1000ml beaker  Red marker

 Filter Paper  Scissor

 Water  Pencil

 Drinking straw  Ruler

 Stapler

III. HYPOTHESIS:

The filter paper absorb the liquid continuously and when the liquid approaches the red ink
within the filter paper, the ink will spread towards the direction of the water resulting to reveal
the components of the red color. Based on our study, the chemical that make up the color that are
called pigment is responsible for the separation of colors because there are pigments attach to
water better than others, allowing them to move further through paper resulting to reveal the
color magenta and yellow.

IV. PROCEDURES:

1. Cut the filter paper into a rectangular, with the width of 1 inch and

length of 6 inches then fold its other end by 1 cm.

2. Get a straw and staple its middle to the folded filter paper.

3. Then measure 2 cm at the other end and put a dot using red
marker.

4. Get the 1000 ml beaker and put the filter paper inside. The straw
will act as a lock so that the filter paper does not fall completely.

5. Fill the beaker with water but it should not touch the red dot

on the filter paper.

V. GUIDE QUESTIONS:
1. What is the purpose of the chromatography experiment?

Chromatography is a laboratory technique used to separate and analyze mixtures of

compounds. It is used to identify, quantify, and purify individual components of a mixture.

2. What is the role of the mobile phase in chromatography? What is the role of the
stationary phase in chromatography?

The mobile phase is the liquid or gas that carries the sample components through the
chromatography system. It is responsible for moving the sample components through the
stationary phase. The stationary phase is the material that is used to separate the sample
components. It is usually a solid material such as silica, alumina, or cellulose. The stationary
phase is responsible for adsorbing and separating the sample components.

3. Does the solvent used in chromatography affect the quality of the results? Explain why or
why not.

Yes, the solvent used in chromatography can affect the quality of the results. Different
solvents can interact differently with the sample components, which can affect the separation of
the components and the resolution of the results.

VI. CONCLUSION:

In conclusion, the components of the ink sample or red dot were successfully separated
and identified. The results of the experiment showed that the ink sample contained two different
components, which were identified as magenta and yellow.
