Tutorial Graphs

1. Given that y = 2x3 -19x2 + 45x + 31 complete the table of values:

X= 0 1 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Y= 59 49 35 49 101

2. To a scale of 2cm: 1 unit on the x axis and 1 cm : 5 units on the y axis clearly plot
the points on the graph paper and complete the curve.

3. From the graph find the other value of x for which y = 49

4. Show clearly the MINIMUM value of y and the value of x at which this occurs.

5. Tabulate and plot on the same graph the curve for y = (x + 1) 2

6. From the graph find the values of x at which x + 1 = (2x3 -19x2 + 45x + 31) ½

Question 3

a) Given that f(x) is a linear function where f(2) = 9 and f(-2) = -11, determine
i. f(x)
ii. f(0.2) [4]

b) Given that f(x) is a linear function, where f(2) = 1 and f(-2) = 3 determine

i) f(x) ii) f(-1) [4]

c) If A = 1 -2 and B = -1 2

3 4 -4 3

Calculate A * B [2]

Question 4

a) A company’s costs for manufacturing up to 45 items satisfy the following table.

Number of Items (N) 10 20 30 40 45

Total Costs (c) $ 400,000 826,000 913,000

i. Show that the Costs © for 10, 30 and 40 items satisfies the equation

C = N * (100 – N) * (400 – N) + 49,000 [3]

ii. Using the above equation for C, Calculate the Costs for 20 and 45 items. [4]
iii. On Graph paper, using a scale of 4 cm = 10 items on the horizontal N axis and
1cm = $40,000 on the vertical C axis, Plot the points and draw a smooth curve for
10 ≤ N ≤ 45. [5]
iv. From the graph, find the cost of producing 25 items. [3]

b) Each item is sold at a fixed price of $p and the company exactly covers all its costs
(breaks even) when 25 are sold. By drawing appropriate lines on the graph :
i. find p [3]
ii. find the profit when 35 are sold [2]
Answer 3.

ii) 7 -4
=A*B
-19 18

Answer 4:

i) N = 20 C = 657000
N= 45 C = 927625

ii)25 sold for 750 000

p = 30,000
cost of 35 are 880,000

35 sold for 35 * 30,000 = 1050,000

Profit = 170,000. Accept 160k to 180k
