Tiling Work Method

1. PURPOSE
The purpose of this Work Method Statement for Floor and Wall Tiling Works is to outline and
Describe in detail the procedure such as setting and lay-out plan on actual location, pre-laying of tiles,
mixing of tile grout, final laying of tiles and all other related activity. Inform all concerned supervisor
including workers the value and importance of this activity prior to implementation. This Activity should
be performed with strict compliance and implementation of Safety Requirements & Procedure and project
specifications to complete the work both for floor and wall tiling.

2. SCOPE OF WORKS
o The scope of this Method Statement covers the works in any Project:
o Floor and wall ceramic tiles on plastered concrete/masonry block
o Ceramic tile on Drywall partition
o

3. STEP OF WORKS
3.1 Preliminary preparation
Approvals
o Obtain approval on SOP (setting out plan)
o Obtain on direction of tiles
o Obtain approval on glue, grout and thickness of grout.
o Obtain access permit from the General contractor
o Obtain the final fix dimension/samples from the General contractor
o Obtain dry layout approval if the works are typical rooms and huge quantity

closed with red tape until the mortar/glue set.

Check the tiles – square, bend, crack and discoloration etc.,

Work area inspection
Check the surface level, square and plumb of the floor and plastered wall. The floor and wall
Surface should be even and adaptable with the thickness of the glue thickness. Inform General contractor if
any cracks on wall or floor. Wavy/bumps and lumps surfaces are Always a nightmare.

Before carrying out tile-fixing works ensure that:
a. All surfaces must be structurally sound, clean, free from dust, oil and any traces of foreign materials that
may affect adhesion of the tile adhesive on the substrate.
b. Brick, floors must be allowed to cure for a minimum of 4 weeks prior to tiling.
c. Cement render and screed must be allowed to cure for at least 7 days and finished to Semi-smooth finish
with a wood float. After curing, a thorough check on the Soundness in adhesion of the screed and render
should be carried out. All substrate Defects should be properly rectified.

Access preparation
Vacuum/brush the residues and the particles before starting the tile installation, as to make sure the thin-set
will lock them to the concrete sub-floor/plastered block. In addition, sprinkle Water on the
concrete/plastered surface before installing the ceramic tiles, to increase the Bond of the adhesive. Soaking
ceramic building materials in water are a common practice. This is a necessity when laying tile that is very
soft, like Saltillo tile, or low-fired, unglazed terracotta. When a tile (or brick for that matter) is too porous,
it will suck the water out of the mortar without allowing it
to set properly, leaving weak bonds between mortar and tile.

CEILING WORK

This is one of the most important steps before commencement of actual ceiling installation. Here grid
layout is arrived by taking into consideration room dimensions {length (l) x breadth (b) x height (h)} Points
to remember: In practical conditions, often the room dimensions are not exactly square in dimensions. In
the basement where there are many ducts, pipes, and cables that may occasionally need maintenance,
installing a suspended ceiling grid system makes a lot of sense. The installation is easy and will make the
basement space more appealing. Suspended ceilings are also ideal for first floor bathrooms where there is a
bathroom on the floor above to allow for plumbing access.

BEFORE THE INSTALLATION
• This suspended ceiling step-by-step installation guide is based on the room having wood
construction walls.
• If installing a suspended ceiling grid into a room that has masonry walls, the installation is virtually
the same as that of wood construction. Simply use a masonry drill, bit, and screws.
• If removing older tile, take care at how it is disposed of if it was installed before 1960 as there may
be asbestos in the tiles.
• Choose the style of the acoustical tile first and then begin the design, purchase, and installation
work thereafter.
• There are different types of acoustical tiles available. Keep in mind that regular tiles have recessed
flanges that protrude below the grid roughly 1/4". Regular tiles may be tricky to cut and trim.
• A licensed electrician may be needed to install light fixtures

What do I need to install a Suspended Ceiling?

• Tape Measure
• Spirit Level / Laser Level

Steps to Install a Suspended Ceiling:
• Step1: Planning and Design
• Step 2: Installing Perimeter/Edge Trim
• Step 3: Fixing the Suspension Points for the Main Runners/ Main Tee Bars
• Step 4: Installing the Main Runners 3600mm (Main Tees)
• Step 5: Installing the Cross Tees 1200 & 600mm (Noggins)
• Step 6: Fitting the Ceiling Tiles

Step 1
How to Plan and Design a Suspended Ceiling for Installation

The first step if you have purchased your Suspended Ceiling from Ceiling Tiles UK you will have likely
received a drawing to show the layout of your ceiling. This will show the position of the components
required to complete your project.

However, if you have chosen not to receive a drawing or you want further assistance on planning the lay
out of your ceiling, please find below the information you will require.

• You will need to have the dimensions of the room or rooms you will be installing your ceiling in.
• Draw the dimensions as close to scale as possible.
• Graph paper can help you with this.
• You can choose from either a 600×600 or a 600×1200 configuration. The configuration you pick
will determine the material requirements for your ceiling.
• You can now draw the layout onto your graph paper.
• Remember whichever option you have selected (600 x 600 or 1200 x 600) you must set the Main
Runners at 1200 centers. Position the tees so that the cuts around the perimeter are equal on both
sides and are as large as possible
• This will make it easier to cut the tiles to size.
• If you are using a 600×1200 configuration, space the 1200mm cross tees 600mm apart. For a
600×600 configuration, add 600mm cross tees between the midpoints of the 1200mm cross tees.
• If you are also putting recessed lights in the ceiling now is the time to plan where they will be
going as it’s easier to move the position of these on paper first.

Suspended Ceiling Installation

Drawing
Step 2
How To Install Suspended Ceiling Perimeter/Edge Trim

The second step is to install your Edge Trim around the perimeter of your room.

• Decide the height the ceiling will be suspended at.

• You will need to ensure that you have left a minimum of 100mm clearance between the new
ceiling and the ceiling it is suspended from.
• If you are installing recessed lights into the ceiling additional clearance will be needed, we
recommend 200mm – 300mm.
• When you are satisfied you are happy with the height of the ceiling, use a level to draw a line
around the room indicating where the perimeter trim will be fixed.
• If you are able to use a laser level this will give you the best results and also cut down on the time
is takes to complete this section of the installation.
• Fasten the perimeter trim securely to the wall at all points using masonry nails for block walls or
drywall screws stud walls. (Fixings @ 350mm centres approx.)
• Position the perimeter trim to your level line ensuring that you keep the perimeter trim as square as
possible to prevent problems further down the line.
• When you come to the corners where the trims meet, overlap them and using your tinsnips cut the
bottom perimeter trim at an angle to give a mitred finish.

Perimeter Edge Trim/

Step 3

How To Position and Fix Suspension Points for Main Runners

The third step, now that you have successfully fitted your Edge Trim is to measure out your suspension
wire and plot the points at which you will be suspending your ceiling.

• Please refer to the drawing that Ceiling Tiles UK has provided you as this will show the location of
the Main Runners. These will be shown on the drawing as a red line
• Measure and mark out the position of each main tee along the perimeter trim.
• The clip on the end of the Main Runner have to be cut off on the end that will rest on the trim.
• Now secure your:

• Ceiling Brackets – if the ceiling is to be suspended from Timber Joists

• Purlin Clips – if the ceiling is suspending from Metal Purlins

• Wire Hangers – if the ceiling is suspending from concrete
• You will need to straighten the suspension wire to enable you to hang the Main Runners.
• If you can secure a hook or vine eye into a drill you can attach a length of wire to a fixed secure
point and the other end is wrapped around the hook of vine eye in the drill. When you spin the drill
this will pull the wire straight. Please only do this until the wire is straight as overdoing this can
snap the wire and ALWAYS ensure that you have correct safety glasses and gloves on when
doing this
• Measure how long the wire has to be cut based on the drop you originally calculated (the distance
from the original ceiling to the new suspended ceiling.
• Add 300mm to the length you need to allow you to have plenty of wire to wrap round to secure the
Main Runner.

• Fix the wire to the fixings that have been provided by putting the wire through the location holes
and securely wrapping the wire round.
• Give the wire a hard tug to confirm it is secure.
• Fix the first suspension wire for each main tee at 400mm – 600mm from the perimeter trim. Check
the drawing we have provided you with for the locations.
• Attach a suspension wire every 1200mm along the line of the main runner.

Step 4
How to Install the Main Runners (3600mm)

The fourth step to installing your suspended ceiling is to fit your main runners into your edge trim to form
the foundation of your gridwork system.

• Most Main Runners are 3600mm long and have slots at every 100mm for your Cross Tees to fix
into. These will begin 50mm from each end.
• Put the first Main Runner in place closest to the Perimeter Trim, ensuring the slot for the first Cross
Tee is in line with the location of the Cross Tee as per your drawing.
• Proceed to measure and cut the Main Tees to size, always checking that the slots on the Main
Runner are in line with locations or the Cross Tees.
• Use a string line across the room to show where the first row of Cross Tees will be located. This
lets you know where the first pre-punched slots need to be.
• Place the Main Tee on the Edge Trim/Wall Angle.
• If the room that you are installing the ceiling in is shorter than 3.6m long, cut the Main Runner to
size
• If you need to do this remember that the clips on the end will have to be removed also.
• For rooms wider than 3600mm, Main Tees can be joined together.

Connecting two Main Runners

• Install the Main Tees so that they’re all level with the perimeter trim already mounted, to do this
stretch a line from wall trim to wall trim at 90 degrees.

Step 5
How to Install Cross Tees (1200mm) Cross Tees (600mm)

The fifth step once your Main Runners are all connected into your Edge Trim is to connect your Cross Tees
into the gaps within your Main Runner.

• The Cross Tees connect to the Main Runner by fitting into the slots.

Cross Tees fixing into the Main Runner

• Depending if you have selected to install a ceiling with 600×600 or 600×1200 this will determine
the location of the Cross Tees, Please refer to your drawing.
• To install the Cross Tees; The 1200 Cross Tees go into Main Runner & 600 Cross Tees go into
centre slot of 1200 Cross Tees, this will form 600 x 600 squares.
• If you are installing 1200 x 600 tiles this will sometimes mean that you do not have to use any 600
Cross Tees and vice versa on smaller 600×600 Ceilings 1200 Cross Tees may not be needed.
• Before cutting and fixing the perimeter cross tees, drop a few full tiles into the grid to ensure the
grid remains square.

• The perimeter Cross Tees are cut to size and rest on Edge Trim/Wall Angle. (See picture).

Cross Tees fixing into the Edge Trim

• On the drawing we will send you the 1200 Cross Tees will be shown as a blue line
• On the drawing we will send you the 600 Cross Tees will be shown as a Green Line
Page 12 of 21
Step 6
How to Fit Ceiling Tiles into Suspended Ceiling Gridwork

The sixth step is to fit your Ceiling Tiles into the gaps in your newly created Suspended Ceiling Gridwork
system.

• Now the grid is in place and ridged the tiles can be put into place. Angle the tiles up through the
grid and gently lower the tiles into place.
• If you have a tile with a pattern make sure the tile is aligned correctly before installing and also it
is a good idea to use gloves when handling the tiles to ensure no fingerprints are left on the tiles.
• When you cut the tiles to go on the edges of the ceiling this can be done very simply with a Stanley
Knife.

How to Cut a Suspended Ceiling Tile

Step 1

The first step is to measure the cut that is required.

Step 2

The second step us to mark the cut line.

Step 3

The third step is to score the tile.

Glass partition work

Glass Partition – Installation

Step 1 - Measuring

a) Measure the floor to ceiling height - check it in at least 3 places, ceilings are not always level!
b) Measure the width - check its straight with a spirit level.
c) Measure the depth - again check the wall the glass will join to is straight with a spirit level.
d) Check if the floor is concrete, wooden floor boards or a suspended floor
e) Check if the ceiling is solid or suspended.

Step 2 - Check for obstructions

a) Are there any skirting boards?

b) Are there any cables or ducting on the wall, floors or ceiling?
If there are skirting boards and you don't want to cut into them, or there are cable ducts and you cannot
move them, then your width measurement needs to be from the edge of these.

Step 3 - Making an Order

Choose one of our standard room sizes based on the measurement you have taken, and then also let us
know what your ceiling and floor and made of. We can then do the rest for you and send you a kit with
everything you need.
If your measurements don’t fit one of our standard room sizes we can make the glass to fit your project,
use our handy wall cost calculator.

Step 4 - Installing the U channel Frame

The first stage of installation is to fix the Aluminium U channel provided around the perimeter of where
the glass partition wall is going to be. Cut the Aluminium channel to length, drill some holes in the
channel and then fix the aluminium channels to the floor, walls and ceiling using screws and wall plugs
(not supplied). Ensure the screws are fixed into something solid.

In the case of a suspended ceiling you should fix the U channel directly into the frame work of the
suspended ceiling and then reinforce this above the ceiling with some timber where necessary. Once the
U channel is in place, the glass just slides into the channel wither at the door opening, or you can just lift
the glass up into the top channel and then drop it down into the bottom channel.

The glass is then secured into the U channel by pushing a rubber gasket into the channel on each side of
the glass. The wedges the glass securely into the channel, clamping it so it can’t move. Allow a 5mm
vertical gap between each glass panel and then once the rubber gasket has been pushed in all around, fill
this gap with clear silicon to fix all the panel together.

Step 5 - Door Installation

Painting Works

After completion of preparatory works such as installation of block, plaster preparation, plaster works and
then the painting works will carry out. In this article will show the procedure on how painting activities will
be done.

Purpose and scope

The purpose of this method is to define the measures and ways of proper application of paint in this project.
Works shall be carried out in compliance with the drawings, project’s specifications and materials. We
required 4 working days for the mobilization after completion of contractual
Procedure.

Work procedure

Mock up sample would be applied for selection and approval of the

Engineer prior to commencement of the works.

Preparation

• Other trades works those are already installed will protect covered/protected acceptably by the liable agent
prior to surface preparation and painting will commence.
• All floor finishes, that already installed to be protected by the flooring contractor.
• We will check the base surface where the paint decoration to be done prior to painting base preparation and
confirm the level of finishes required for the application of painting. Mainly surface plaster/drywall
imperfection, unevenness, sagginess, bump, heavy scratches/cracks, improper corners MEP cut-outs etc.,
that need to be modified to an adequate level to receive paint finishes.
• Once the base structure is adequately good enough to receive paint decoration then we will commence
removal of the dust and dirt etc.,
• The surface of the area to be painted would be prepared by removing loose particles etc., by using
sandpaper.

Paint System Application

• The paint system as approved by the Engineer.

• Engineer has to confirm the wild air is on to prevent forming cracks on block/plaster and drywall system.
• Engineer has to confirm all dusty works are completed (cutting of stones/tiles etc.,) and floors are protected
to prevent any damage
• While using narrow and wide scaffolds for paint application.
