Real-Time Network (RTN) Survey Exercise

The purpose of this lab is to show students how to collect RTN GNSS data. Students will
connect a rover to the Oregon Real Time GNSS Network (ORGN) that broadcasts observations
that are used for differencing performed by the rover. The students will then find 6 control
marks from our Campus Survey using the “Stake Out” feature on a rover GNSS unit, and will
collect RTN data on these passive marks.

Station Assignments:
Each party will recover and observe the following stations for 180 seconds each in the order
specified in the table below. After observing each of the stations once, a different person in your
party will observe the stations again, starting with the first station, until all stations have been
observed 3 times.

Note that some of the stations might not be observable due to poor sky visibility a couple of
those stations are italicized in the table above. If you are unable to get initialized on your station
you may skip said station for all of the loops. The goal is to observe as many of the stations as
possible so don’t simply skip stations because the initialization is taking longer than usual,
especially if you have relatively good sky visibility.
Detailed instructions for the lab are shown on the following pages.

Preparing your rover GNSS equipment
1. Prepare the Leica CS15 data collector for collecting real-time data.
a. Power on the data collector. After a couple of minutes, a blue light should appear
next to the Bluetooth icon, and a green light should appear next to the battery
icon.
b. Using the red stylus, tap “New Job” then tap “Next”
c. Enter a unique name for the job and tap “Store”.
i. Use the following name convention: CE463Pxx
If you are in party 1, then the name should be CE463P01
d. Import the following data files by first inserting the thumb drive into the data
collector, then going to “User”, then “Tools & Utilities”, then “Transfer user
objects”. In the dropdown menus select the following:
i. Insert Control Job
Object to transfer: Job
From: USB
To: Internal memory
Job: CE463Control
Then select “okay” to complete the import. When prompted if you would
like to transfer more objects select “yes”
ii. Insert Coordinate System
Object to transfer: Coordinate System
From: USB
To: Internal memory
Coordinate System: OR N NAD83 G12B
Then select “okay” to complete the import. When prompted if you would
like to transfer more objects select “yes”
iii. Insert Geoid File
Object to transfer: Geoid field file
From: USB
To: Internal memory
Geoid field file: ORGeoid12B GRS80
Then select “okay” to complete the import. When prompted if you would
like to transfer more objects select “no”
e. You should now be on the main menu screen. From here we need to select the
coordinate systems we just imported. To do this select “Jobs & Data”, then select
“Job properties”. Now, tap on the “Coordinate System” tab and ensure the system
is set to “OR N NAD83 G12B”. This is NAD1983 Oregon North Zone State
Plane Coordinates with the Geoid12B hybrid geoid model.
f. Go to the main menu and tap “User”, then tap “Working style wizard”.
g. A Working Style Wizard window will appear. If the current working style is
“Real-time”, then tap “Back”. Otherwise, select “Choose a different working
style” then tap “Next”. Select the “Real-time” Working Style then tap “Next”.
h. Tap on the modem icon and select “RTK services”. Select the “ORGN Standard”
i. Tap on the crosshair in the upper left corner of the data collector and select “Start
RTK Data Stream”
j. If working properly, a window will pop open stating the ORGN is functioning
properly, assuming you are in an area with good sky visibility.

2. Attach the antenna to a fixed-height rover rod with bipod.

a. Turn the GNSS antenna on by holding its power button down for a few seconds.
A green light should appear above the battery icon, and a blue light should appear
next to the Bluetooth icon.

Stake Out for Passive Marks, then Observe

In this lab, you will be assigned to find 5-6 passive from our Campus Survey. The coordinates
for these marks were determined via a least square’s adjustment combining level, total station,
and static GNSS observations.

1. Return to the main menu and tap “Go to Work!” and then “Stake Out”
2. Select the control project we had previously uploaded called “CE463Control”.
3. Select the mark you desire to find, and then the screen should tell you how far
north/south and east/west you need to go to be over the mark.
4. Upon finding the mark, set up over it and collect 180 seconds of data.

a. Tap “Go to Work!” then tap “Survey”

b. The Survey window will appear. Enter the station name for the point ID and
antenna height (should be 2.000 meters).
c. Wait until the GNSS receiver has initialized. This may take some time if you
are under a tree or next to a building. The receiver will prompt you if it has
initialized. To check, the 3D coordinate quality will be generally less than 0.10
feet. When initialized, the target icon in the upper left corner of the data collector
will appear “pin-pointed” instead of as a large circle. Sometimes, you can wait
for the receiver to initialize while standing out in an open area, then you can
slowly walk back and set up over the point (and maintain initialization).
d. Once initialized tap “Meas” to begin collecting real-time data.
e. After collecting at least 180 seconds of data (i.e., 180 positions), tap “Stop” then
tap “Store”
f. Verify the point ID and antenna height, then tap “OK” to finish storing the point.
The equipment will chime and say “Point Stored”.

5. Invert the antenna so that the initialization is lost, note you can also do this by placing
your hand over the top of the receiver. Then restore it to the vertical position, or remove
your hand from the top of the receiver and wait for the receiver to re-initialize. (Note you
can do this as you begin walking to your next station).
6. Leave the equipment on and repeat the process for all of your assigned marks.
7. After Observing all of the stations once return to your first station and have another party
member observe all of the stations again in the same order as your first loop.
8. Repeat until three loops have been completed on your assigned stations.

Record and Save Results

1. When finished collecting all of your necessary data, download the Job to the USB drive
provided to you. Then, provide the instructor with said USB prior to leaving for the day.
