DEFLECTION OF BEAMS:

POINT LOAD INTEGRATION IN STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

I. SUPERPOSITION METHOD FOR SIMPLY SUPPORTED BEAM, CANTILEVER BEAM & PROPPED BEAM

This is the method of finding the deflection at points in the beam using the derived formulas. However,
in most cases, the maximum deflection cannot be determined by this method.

Materials, 4th Edition by Pytel and Singer)

II. FIXED-END MOMENTS (FEM)

In the moment distributed method, we first assume the individual spans to be fully restrained at both
ends, then we compute the fixed-end moments.

Rules of Sign
• Positive for clockwise reaction
• Negative for counterclockwise reaction

III. THREE-MOMENT FACTORS FROM THREE-MOMENT EQUATION

GENERAL FORMULA

Where:
𝑀1, 𝑀2 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑀3 are the respective moments at points ①, ② and ③. Since the supports are
simple, 𝑀1 = 𝑀3 = 0 and only one three-moment equation is needed to solve the unknown
moment 𝑀2 .

𝐴1𝑎1= the moment about point ① of the area of the moment diagram resulting from carrying
the applied loads on the simple span 1.

𝐴2𝑏̅ 2 = the moment about point ③ of the area of the moment diagram resulting from carrying
the applied loads on the simple span 2.

ℎ1 = the vertical distance from point ② to point ① of the deflected beam

DEFLECTION OF BEAMS:
POINT LOAD INTEGRATION IN STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS
ℎ3 = the vertical distance from point ② to point ③ of the deflected beam The sign of ℎ1 or ℎ3 is
positive when measured upward from point ②. When points ①, ②, and ③ are on the same
elevation, then ℎ1= ℎ3 = 0 and the right member of equation ① becomes zero.
