BEAM - DEFLECTION Point Load Analogous
BEAM - DEFLECTION Point Load Analogous
I. SUPERPOSITION METHOD FOR SIMPLY SUPPORTED BEAM, CANTILEVER BEAM & PROPPED BEAM
This is the method of finding the deflection at points in the beam using the derived formulas. However,
in most cases, the maximum deflection cannot be determined by this method.
Table 1
(Derived from TABLE 6-2 SUMMARY OF BEAM LOADINGS on pages 233-234 of Strength of
Materials, 4th Edition by Pytel and Singer)
In the moment distributed method, we first assume the individual spans to be fully restrained at both
ends, then we compute the fixed-end moments.
Rules of Sign
• Positive for clockwise reaction
• Negative for counterclockwise reaction
GENERAL FORMULA
Where:
𝑀1, 𝑀2 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑀3 are the respective moments at points ①, ② and ③. Since the supports are
simple, 𝑀1 = 𝑀3 = 0 and only one three-moment equation is needed to solve the unknown
moment 𝑀2 .
𝐴1𝑎1= the moment about point ① of the area of the moment diagram resulting from carrying
the applied loads on the simple span 1.
𝐴2𝑏̅ 2 = the moment about point ③ of the area of the moment diagram resulting from carrying
the applied loads on the simple span 2.
