MTH 261 Lesson 10 - Lines, Planes, and Projections

1. Describe the vectors v, w, and u shown below in component form. Then find the magnitude
of each vector.

v u
w

2. Use the vectors shown in problem (1) above to graph each of the given vector expressions.
Then compute the resultant vectors symbolically.

a. v + w

b. 2v + 3u

c. 3v − u

3. Find the vector equation for the line through P0 = (2, 0, 1) and P1 = (4, −1, 1). What is the
parametric form of the line? What is the general form of the vector equation for a line and
parametric equations for a line?

4. Find the equations of the line through P0 = (3, −1, 2) parallel to the line with equations
x = −1 + 2t, y = 1 + t, and z = −3 + 4t.

5. Determine whether the following lines intersect and, if so, the point of intersection. If they do
intersect, is it a collision?

x1 (t) = 3 + t, y1 (t) = 1 − 2t, z1 (t) = 3 + 3t

x2 (s) = 4 + 2s, y2 (s) = 6 + 3s, z2 (s) = 1 + s
