Definition of Terms
Ampere - a unit of measure of electric current
Circuit - the path of electric current from the source to the components and goes back to the source
Kilowatt - a unit of power which is equivalent to 1000w
Conductor - a wire or a cord which provides path for current flow
Resistance - the quality of electric current measured in ohms that resist the flow of current
Hot wire - a wire through which current flows
Insulator – material used to cover electric wires which may be made from plastic, rubber, or
asbestos.
Tools - are implements used to modify raw materials for human use
Corrugated plastic conduit (CPC) – commonly known as flexible non-metallic conduit or the “mold
flex”
Metallic Conduits- metal raceways that was classified into four; rigid steel conduit (RSC),
intermediate metallic conduit or tubing (IMC or IMT), electrical metallic conduit or tubing (EMC or
EMT) and the flexible metallic conduit (FMC)
Non-metallic conduits- plastic conduits or raceways designed to be a channel of wire that are
classified as; rigid non-metallic conduit or the PVC, the flexible nonmetallic or CPC, and the surface
plastic molding
Connectors and Adapters - accessories that are used to connect from boxes to conduits or
raceways to the other boxes in the electrical system
Every electrician needs basic hand tools to perform everyday tasks, Fortunately, today's basics are better
than older models, providing more comfort and safety than their predecessors. Manufacturers have made
tools more 'ergonomically correct,' and improved designs help cut down on hand and wrist injuries often
caused by repetitive movement. Plus, they make it easier to perform the same motion over and over
because the tools just feel more comfortable. While today's designs may provide more safety and comfort,
they are still the basic hand tools electricians have been using for years.
Tools are handheld devices that aid in accomplishing a task such as cutting, driving, boring, measuring,
soldering, and another auxiliary tasks provider.
Phillips Screwdriver-has a cross tip resembling a positive (+) sign. This is used to drive screws with cross
slot heads.

Module 1: Preparing Electrical Materials and Tools for the Task
Stubby Screwdriver - comes in either Standard or Philips screwdriver with short shank or blade and a
shorted handle used to turn screws in tight space where standard screwdriver cannot be used.
Allen Screwdriver - could be in the shape of a screwdriver or a wrench. Its function is to drive screw with
hexagonal slot head.
Claw Hammer- a hammer with one side of the head split and curved, used for extracting nails.
Mallet (rubber head) -a kind of hammer, often made of rubber or sometimes wood, that is smaller than a
maul or beetle, and usually has a relatively large head.
Ballpeen Hammer- a hammer with a rounded end opposite the face, a type of peening metal working
hammer used in.
Combination Pliers (Lineman’s Pliers)-This is used for gripping, holding, and cutting electrical wires and
cables and even small nails. They are usually used by linemen in doing heavy tasks.
Side Cutting Pliers-type of pliers is used for cutting fine, medium, and big wires and cables.
Long Nose Pliers- used for cutting and holding fine wires. This can reach tight space or small opening
where other pliers cannot reach and used in making terminal loops of copper wires.
A soldering iron is a hand tool used in soldering. It supplies heat to melt solder so that it can flow into the
joint between two workpieces.
Circuit breaker - a protective device that is reusable after tripping, used to cut off the current automatically
when trouble in the circuit such as short circuit or overload occurs.

ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION and MAINTENANCE
Module 1: Preparing Electrical Materials and Tools for the Task
Conduits/Pipes - electrical materials used as the passage of wires for protection and insulation. These
could be rigid metallic, rigid nonmetallic, flexible nonmetallic, and flexible metallic conduit
Fuse - a circuit protective device that automatically melts the thin strand of wire inside to cut the current
when an overload or short circuit happens.
Male Plug - a device inserted to a convenience outlet from a current consuming appliance.
Utility Box - a rectangular shaped metallic or plastic (PVC) material where flush type convenience outlets
and switches are attached.
Junction Box - an octagonal shaped electrical material where the connections or joints of wire are being
done. It is also where the flush type receptacle is attached. This could be made of metal or (PVC)
Polyvinylchloride.
Connectors - used to attach metallic or non-metallic conduit to the junction or utility boxes.
Drilling Equipment These are needed to make holes in building construction for passage of wires and
conduit in both new and old installation, indoor or outdoor wiring. Common types of drilling tools and
equipment are:
