𝟏𝟎+𝟐𝟒 𝟑𝟒
= = 17
𝟐 𝟐
10U
2. Insert three arithmetic means between 8 and 16.
8 10 12 14 16
𝒂𝟏 𝒂𝟐 𝒂𝟑 𝒂𝟒 𝒂𝟓
𝒂𝒏 − 𝒂𝒌
Using the difference formula: 𝒅 = 𝒏 −𝒌
𝟏𝟔 −𝟖

𝒂𝒏 − 𝒂𝒌
Using the difference formula: 𝒅 = 𝒏 −𝒌
−𝟏𝟕 −𝟏𝟑
d= 𝟔 −𝟏
−𝟑𝟎
d= 𝟓
= −𝟔
4. Insert five arithmetic means between 58 and -20.
58 45 32 19 6 -7 -20
𝒂𝟏 𝒂𝟐 𝒂𝟑 𝒂𝟒 𝒂𝟓 𝒂𝟔 𝒂𝟕
𝒂𝒏 − 𝒂𝒌
Using the difference formula: 𝒅 = 𝒏 −𝒌
−𝟐𝟎 −𝟓𝟖
d= 𝟕 −𝟏
−𝟕𝟖
d= 𝟔
= -13
1. Given 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10 d= ______
2. Find the common difference of 2a, 6a,10a, 14a.
3. Given 3/2, 7/2, 11/2 d= ______
4. The fourth term of an arithmetic sequence is 18
and the sixth term is 28. Find the third term.
5. What are the first and last term of an arithmetic
sequence when its arithmetic means are 35, 15
and -5?
ARITHMETIC SERIES
The series is the indicated sum of the
terms of a sequence.
An arithmetic series is an indicated
sum of the terms of an arithmetic
sequence.
Sequence: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, . . .
Series : 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6, . . .
WHAT DID KARL DO?
1. He added the first
and last terms.
1 + 100 = 101
2. There were 50 pairs
of numbers with sum of
101.
3. Multiply:
50 (101) = 5050
EXAMPLES:
1. Find the sum of the first 100 natural
numbers 1 + 2 + 3 +, . . .+ 100.
Given: 𝒂𝟏 = 1 𝒂𝒏 = 100 n = 100
𝒏
𝑺𝒏 = (a1+an)
𝟐
𝟏𝟎𝟎
𝑺𝟏𝟎𝟎 = (𝟏+100)
𝟐
𝑺𝟏𝟎𝟎 = 𝟓𝟎(𝟏𝟎𝟏) = 5050
EXAMPLES:
2. Find the sum of first 14 terms of the
arithmetic sequence 2, 5, 8, 11, 15, . . .
Given: 𝒂𝟏 = 2 d=3 n = 14
𝒏
𝑺𝒏 = [(2a1+(n - 1)d]
𝟐
𝟏𝟒
𝑺𝟏𝟒 = 𝟐 [(𝟐(𝟐)+(14-1)3]
𝑺𝟏𝟒 = 𝟕[(𝟒 + 𝟏𝟑 𝟑 ]
𝑺𝟏𝟒 = 7(43) = 301
EXAMPLES:
3. Find the sum of all multiples of 3
between 1 and 100.
Given: 𝒂𝟏 = 3 𝒂𝒏 = 99 n=?
an = a1 + (n – 1)d
𝟗𝟗 𝟑𝒏
99 = 3 + (n – 1)3 =
𝟑 𝟑
99 = 3 + 3n – 3 33 = n
99 = 3n
Given: 𝒂𝟏 = 3 𝒂𝒏 = 99 n = 33
𝒏
𝑺𝒏 = (a1+an)
𝟐
𝟑𝟑
𝑺𝟑𝟑 = (𝟑
+ 99)
𝟐
𝑺𝟑𝟑 = 𝟏𝟔. 𝟓(𝟏𝟎𝟐)
𝑺𝟑𝟑 = 1683
OTHER EXAMPLES: SOLUTION:
4. Find the sum of 𝒏
4. 𝑺𝒏 = (a1+an)
the first 30 terms of 𝟐
an arithmetic 𝟑𝟎
sequence whose 𝑺𝟑𝟎 = 𝟐
(-4
+ 112)
first and last terms = 15 (108)
𝑺𝟑𝟎 = 1,620
are -4 and 112,
respectively.
SOLUTION:
5. What is the sum 5. 𝑺𝒏 = 𝒏𝟐 [(𝟐a1+ [n-1]d)]
of the first 25 terms 𝑺𝟐𝟓 =
𝟐𝟓
𝟐 𝟐𝟖 + 𝟐𝟓 − 𝟏 −𝟑
𝟐
of an arithmetic = 12.5 {56 + 24(-3)}
sequence with first = 12.5 (56 + (-72)}
= 12.5 (-16)
term of 28 and a 𝑺𝟐𝟓 = -200
