QUARTER 4 – MODULE 1

WELD CARBON STEEL PIPE

USING SMAW
I. INTRODUCTION
This unit covers the skills ,knowledge and attitude in
performing groove welding on carbon steel plates in different
position such as 1G,2G,3G and 4G.

II. MODULE CONTENT

WELDING CARBON MILD STEEL PIPE (1G)

LO2: PERFORM FILLER PASS/CAP PASS

III. TECHNICAL TERMS:

Concave Weld Face A weld having a center of its face

below the weld edges.
Concavity Maximum distance from the face of a concave
fillet weld perpendicular to a line joining the toes.
Convexity Maximum distance from the face of a convex
fillet weld perpendicular to a line joining the toes.
Convex Weld Face A weld having a center of its face above
the weld edges.
Fillet Weld A type of weld which has a triangular cross
section area.
Flat Position The axis of the plate and weld is horizontal.
Penetration The distance from the original surface of the
base metal to that point at which fusion ceases
Profile Geometrical structure of the weld
Root of Weld Part of a weld farthest from the application of
weld heat and/or filler metal.
Stick Welding Other term of SMAW process

WELDING GROOVE WELD ON CARBON MILD STEEL PLATES (1G)

1
1. Root gap: Separation between the edges to be welded at the root of the
joint
2. Root face: Surface of the joint preparation perpendicular to the
surface of the plate
3. Bevel surface: Oblique surface of the joint preparation
4. Bevel angle: Angle between the bevelled surface and a plane
perpendicular to the plate
5. Included angle: total angle between the two bevel surfaces
6. Seam width :Effective width of the joint (distance between the bevels
plus depth of penetration). The width of the calking iron seam and
groove iron are the same thing
7. Thickness of the plate

1. Throat thickness: Distance between seam root and surface measured

on the bisector of the angle
2. Leg length: distance between seam root and edge.
3. Joint root: point in which the bottom of the seam intersects the
surface of the base metal
4. Joint edge: Junction point between seam surface and base metal
surface
5. Joint surface: External surface of the seam
6. Fusion depth: Depth reached by the fusion bath from the surface of
the base metal
7. Seam width: Distance between the joint edges

2
WELDING GROOVE WELD ON CARBON MILD STEEL PIPE (1G)

Objective:
To perform a multi pass weld in flat position. The bead should not exceed the
required weld profile, not concave nor convex with fine ripples. The bead should be uniform,
straight, and should be half to 2/3 overlap from one another.
Material/supplies:
1. 2 pcs. Mild Steel pipes 10mm X 50mm X 200mm
2. ELECTRODE. E-6013- 3.25mm
E-6011-3.25mm
Tools and Equipment:
AC or DC welding machine with accessories
Chipping Hammer
Steel brush Welding gloves (leather)
Welding apron (leather)
Welding helmet/mask
Portable grinder

PLAN/ILLUSRATION

Procedures:
1. Wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) before welding.
2. Prepare tools, equipment and materials needed.
3. Set up the welding machine and adjust the correct current amperage settings to 95
amperes.
4. 85-100 amperes (range of adjustments)
5. Tack weld the pipes 6mm from each end with uniform gap of 3.0mm between the pipes.
6. Preset the pipe for angular distortion.
7. Put the pipe in the welding positioner.
3
8. The pipe should rotate in Deposit the root pass with the electrode at the center with 70
degrees travel angle and 90 degrees work angle.

9. Remove the slag and clean the root pass.

10. Deposit the second bead on the top of the root pass. It must completely fused the plates
and the first

11. Clead the bead and inspect for any defects.

NOTE: Wear safety glasses when cleaning and removing slag.
12.Deposit remaining bead the final cap or cap pass.
