DERBY DAY FUNDRAISER
Selecting a fundraiser for your school can be a challenge, as there are so
many options available today. This fundraiser, the Derby Day, will be a
horse race with a difference. The horses will be replaced with “jockeys” on
stick horses. Many of us may remember using a stick as a pretend horse as
a child.
For this race day, each grade must enter “jockeys” who will design their
own stick horses to participate in different races. Parents, teachers and
community members may also participate in the different races.
The Derby Day must be a fun event where spectators can pledge a specific
donation for their favourite horse. Spectators are encouraged to dress up
for fun to add more sparkle to the Derby Day. There will be great prizes for the best-dressed
person and couple as well as for the best hat.

BACKGROUND
The History of the Derby Horse Race
The Derby Stakes, also known as the Epsom Derby, is
a horse race in England which was first run in 1780.
Nowadays the race takes place at Epsom Downs, a
racecourse in Surrey, England on the first Saturday of
June each year, over a distance of 2 423 metres.
In 1931, the Derby became the world's first outdoor
sporting event to be broadcast on television. Currently
the race is worth £1.5 million, with £850 650 going to
the owner of the winning horse.

SCENARIO
Hosting a Derby Day at your school is a great way to get the
community together and to raise funds for the school.
As a Grade 10 Tourism learner, you are required to plan a Derby Day
fundraiser for your school. As the main organiser, you must ensure that
the preparations for the Derby Day goes according to plan.
You will be responsible for, amongst others, the setting of the
fundraising goals, obtaining permission for the event, evaluating the
venue, developing the rules for the race, manage the entries and the
marketing of the Derby Day. You must also source prizes from local
businesses for the winning horse and the best-dressed person and
couple.
DRESSING UP FOR FUN
Derby Horseracing events have a strong focus on fashion and spectators often use the event to
show off their fashion flair.
What sets a Derby Day apart from other sports and entertainment events?
The fashion, the hats and the stick horses!
