RC and Steel Mixed Structure

This document provides instructions for defining, analyzing, and presenting results for a mixed reinforced concrete and steel frame and shell structure using ROBOT Millennium software. It describes how to: 1) Configure the program preferences, including setting units to imperial (feet and kips) and the US standard; 2) Define the structural axes, sections, bars, supports, and load cases for the 2D frame model; 3) Add a concrete slab and wall by copying the frame to 3D and changing to the Shell module.

Synopsis:
Te purpose of this example is to show the ease of defnition, analysis and
presentation of results for a 3D frame and shell structure (mixed RC and steel) in
ROBOT Millennium.
For this example, it is assumed that ROBOT Millennium Version 20.1 or
ROBOT Millennium Free is installed on the PC any questions please contact
[email protected].

Following installation of ROBOT Millennium, the user may confgure the work-
ing parameters or Preferences. To do this:
Start the ROBOT Millennium program (click the appropriate icon or select the
command from the taskbar).
On the opening window, displayed on the screen click the frst icon in
the frst row (Frame 2D Design). Other options are for 3d frames and models
with surfaces such as walls and foors, access to stand alone design modules etc
Select Tools > Preferences from the text menu or click on the , then
a

icons on the toolbars to open the Preferences dialog box. Preferences allow the
user to set up working and printout languages, fonts, colors etc.

Regional settings set the default databases (profles, materials), units and
codes to the standards of a country. In the example above, we have chosen
American section database (AISC) and imperial data units: [ft],[in], [kip].
NOTE:
Click Accept to close the window
You can check active units in right, bottom corner of the screen. In this
example should be the display: [ft] [kip] [Deg].

Tis example shows how to defne, analyze and prepare printouts of results for a
mixed (RC and steel, frame and shell) structure.
We will start work in 2D (in Frame module), then copy the structure to make a 3d
model and afer changing to Shell module we will add the concrete slab and wall.

The axes of the structure create an additional grid which can be used to
defne different elements of the structure and select structure compo-

The grid intersections form points that facilitate the users work by guiding
cursor movements during graphical structure defnition.

In this step, we learn how to mesh the panels, since ROBOT Millennium is fnite el-
ement solution. ROBOT Millennium has extremely powerful meshing algorithms to
cope with virtually any shape of structure or mesh requirement.
The meshing of the plates and shells are made automatically (with stan-
dard parameters), after starting the calculation process. However it is often
desirable to mesh the structure manually - often to obtain better quality
meshing we should to modify the standard settings.

range of analysis types (linear static, non-linear geometry and material,
buckling, modal analysis, harmonic analysis, seismic analysis, time history
analysis etc.)
If the user wishes to see these possibilities, he/she may look in the AnaIy-
