The world’s first metro system was built in London. They

opened the first tunnel on the 10th January 1863, it
operated from the central London, Paddington to
Farringdon and was part of the Metropolitan Railway.
The trains at that time were steam engines

The Metropolitan Line still

exists and it appears on
London Underground map
today. Although there were
some problems with the
smoke from the steam
engines, the service was
very popular and the
district line was
constructed which extended the service to the suburbs.
Subsequently, a large network of underground and
surface rail lines were built over the next thirty years.
With the arrival of the 20th century, London had a very
extensive metro system.

21. What could be called in today’s terms London's first

“real” metro line was the City & South London Railway. It
was the first fully electric system and ran between
Stockwell and Bank in the City of London. The original
plan was for a cable railway, but due to the recent
developments in electrical engineering they changed
their plans and incorporated these new advances. This
new system was a totally modernised network and soon
became to be known as “the tube”.

22. London became the forerunner for other

underground systems across Europe which began
emerging in the late 19th century. At the beginning of
20th century Paris, Budapest and Glasgow had all built
their own underground train lines. Each one based on
the same system established in London. London always
wanted to stay one step ahead of the competition .
Another short line was opened, which went on to
become today’s Waterloo & City Line. In 1900 they
began electrifying all the lines on the Metropolitan and
District Railways which increased their efficiency.

23. Previously in the 18th century many attempts had

been made to build a tunnel under the river Thames but
at that time, digging deep tunnels was extremely risky
and fraught with problems and all attempts failed. But in
1843 Brunel’s Thames tunnel was completed and it
successfully crossed the Thames. In 1869 it became a
train tunnel and in 1870 another tunnel based on
Brunel’s plans was opened which also crossed the river
running from the Tower of London to Bermondsey.
24. The London underground system began its
expansion in the 1960s when the first new tube line in
central London for more than sixty years was opened,
the Victoria in 1969. In 1979 the Jubilee line was
opened. And during the nineties, expansion continued
with the extension of the Piccadilly line to Heathrow
airport and the Jubilee line was also extended.

25. London has a growing population which lives and

works in the city and it continually has to be improving
and expanding its underground system. There are
various plans to extend lines further into its suburbs and
increase the number of lines crossing the central
London. These plans are to ensure that the Tube
responds to the changing needs of the people who rely
on the the underground system every day.

Answers: the origins of the underground, early success and growth,

technological transformation, leading the way, overcoming physical
obstacles, later expansion, still the biggest and the best today.
