Electrical Supplies and Materials.

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators from
Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-In-Charge Schools Division
Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin in partnership with the Local
Government of Pasig through its mayor, Honorable Vico Sotto.
The writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the Most
Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) while overcoming their personal, social,
and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners

LESSON

ELECTRICAL SUPPLIES AND MATERIALS

Electrical supplies and materials are made and constructed for

electrical purposes such as to:

1. carry electrical current from the source to the load to current consuming
devices,
2. regulates the flow of electrical current in an electrical circuit,
3. it houses electrical outlet, lamp receptacles and switches,
4. hold and secure electrical conduits to its fixtures ,
5. protects electrical circuit from overload and short circuit and;
6. promote an electrical fire free environment.
The following are the most commonly used electrical supplies and materials.

WIRE is a single electrical conductors 3.26 mm or no. 8 AWG and smaller

in sizes.

CABLE is a group of wires that is wrapped in sheathing and are used to

carry larger amount of electric currents. Cables are electric conductor that is larger
than wires.

Stranded wire is composed of a number of small

wires bundled together to form a larger conductor.
It is more flexible than solid wire of the same
diameter. It comes in different colors and sizes.
Solid wire consists of single core conductor. It is
used where there is little need for flexibility in the
wire. It also come in different colors and sizes.

Flat Cord has two sets of stranded conductors

separated by insulators. It is usually used for
electrical appliance and devices. It is also used for
extension wiring.

Non Metallic Sheathed Cable consist of two or

more wires that are wrapped together with an
insulation to form a single unit.

ELECTRICAL BOXES are used for electrical outlets, switches, ceiling

fixtures and junction for splices and joints. Depending on the size and shape of
the box, electrical boxes hold different number of wires. There are octagon, square,
rectangular, shallow and weatherproof type.

Utility box is used to house convenience outlets

and switches. It has a knock-out that can be
removed so that it can be connected to an
electrical conduit.

Junction box are octagonal shape which are

often made from metal or plastic, it houses lamp
receptacle and for wire connection.

Square box / Gang box is like a junction box but

it is much bigger. It is used to connect more than
four electrical conduit and house more splices
and joints.
Panel box is where an array of circuit breakers
are installed. Its size depends on the number of
branch circuit. The main circuit breaker supply
electric power to your house.

Control box provides the physical interface to

allow an operator to control a piece of equipment
and monitor its performance.

Safety switch box are used to control the

switching of heavy equipment and machinery
from its power source. Fuse are installed to it for
disconnecting means.

FUSES AND CIRCUIT BREAKER are electrical protective devices which

are used to interrupt the flow of current when short circuit or over current occurs.
Available in different sizes, shapes and ratings.

Cartridge fuse is a cylinder shaped fuse with

metal caps at both ends. It is plugged in the safety
switch box. The ampere of the fuse depends on
the circuit to be protected.

Knife blade fuse is a cartridge fuse having a

metal blade at each end of a cylindrical tube. It is
screwed to the safety switch box terminal.

Plug fuse are small variety of fuse that handle the

protection of electrical devices.

Circuit breaker is designed to automatically trip-

off when there is an overload or short in the
circuit. Its basic function is to interrupt current
flow after a fault is detected.

SWITCH is an electrical device which regulates the flow of electric current.

It is used to turn ON and OFF the circuit.

ELECTRICAL OUTLETS also known as convenience outlets, power

outlets, and electrical sockets. It allows electrical appliances, devices and equipment
to connect to the electric power supply system.
Flush type switch is a switch assembled to a face
plate and mounted on utility box buried or
concealed on concrete or wood with only its face
exposed.

Surface type switch is a switch designed for

mounting on a plane surface like wood or concrete
and it does not require an electrical box when
installed.
Toggle switch is a type of switch that are used for
switching appliances, devices and equipment.

Convenience outlet is a power receptacle on

walls where plugs are inserted to supply electric
power to appliances, devices and equipment.

Special purpose outlet is used for connection of

appliances and devices which requires higher
current such as air conditioning unit, refrigerator
and washing machine.
Ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) is a
convenience outlet mainly used to protect people
from electric shock. Electric power is
disconnected when there is an electrical fault in
the circuit.

FITTINGS AND ACCESSORIES are electrical supplies and materials

which are commonly used to fit, connect and support electrical wiring during
installation. The following are some of the examples of these materials:

Insulated staple nail is used to support wires

and cables when it is installed over a wooden
surface, the insulation protects the wires and
cables from damage.
Condulets is a fitting resembling to a box with a
removable cover for easy access to electric
conductors.

Porcelain tube is a ceramic tube used in exposed

electric wiring to support single insulated
conductor where it passes through a wood joist,
studs and other surface material.
Electrical tape is used to insulate electrical wires
and cables when splices, joints and taps are
made.

Rubber tape is like an electrical tape which has

an excellent physical and electrical properties. It
is best used for adding moisture protection and
padding to wire and cable splices.
Connectors are used to connect one piece
of conduit to another or to connect conduit to an
electrical box.

Lock nut is a material screwed to connector to

secure in place after inserting to an electrical box.

Male plug is an electrical device with two or three

pins that is inserted in convenience outlet to
make an electrical connection.

Coupling are small fittings used to join two

conduits to continue a straight run.

Liquid tight connector are used to provide extra

protection from water infiltration when electrical
installation are made in outdoor or exposed to
damp location.

Clamps are used to hold and anchor electrical

conduits in its proper position.

Wire bushing are used to protect and support the

wires and cables when inserted to a material. It’s
either made of PVC or rubber.

Wire connector/Push-in wire connector are

used to make a solderless or splice less
connection. It serve as wiring sleeves where wires
are twisted, capped or inserted on to it.

Screws are metal pins which has a spiral blade to

penetrate through woods, metal and other
materials, it is used to hold objects or materials
together.

Bolts and nut are metal rod with screw thread

used to fasten and secure objects or materials in
place. It is loosen or tighten by a screwdriver or
a wrench depending on its head.

Screw anchor (tox) are inserted in holes made

during drilling. It expands when screwed to
support light materials in place.

Expansion bolt is used to secure heavy objects or

materials. It can handle vertical and horizontal
loads. By tightening the nut, the metals expands
inside the drill hole making it impossible to
extract.

Image Uses and Function
supplies and materials
WRAP-UP

Electrical supplies and materials are essential in electrical installation

and maintenance, thus proper supplies and materials should be selected
properly in performing any electrical job to ensure safety, durability,
efficiency, economy and convenience.

The uses of electrical supplies and materials is to control the flow of

current in an electrical circuit; carry electrical current from the source to the
load or current consuming apparatus; hold and secure wires to its fixtures
inside and outside houses and buildings; and protect the houses, buildings,
appliances’ and instruments from any destruction and damage.

VALUING

Quality, economy, durability of electrical supplies and materials should

always be considered in performing any electrical task to ensure safety and
security of work done. Electrical supplies and materials should of the
recommended, tested, and verified by the safety and quality board agency.

What practical application does this lesson teach you? Explain your
answer briefly.
