Design of Insulation

 The fundamental consideration in design of the insulation of transformer is arranging core,

winding and insulation to obtain satisfactory result.
 The three basic considerations in design of the insulation are:
 Electrical considerations
 Mechanical considerations
 Thermal considerations

Electrical considerations:

 Considerations of the magnitude and nature of the voltage which appear between different parts of
the transformer. This includes;
 Voltage between individual turns
 Voltage between coil or layers
 Voltage between windings
 Voltage between winding to core and tank
 To check the insulation of transformer the following tests are conducted.
 Sustained frequency high voltage test
 Impulse test
 Reasons for conducting test
 To ensure transformer has reasonable life
 To check the ability of transformer to withstand abnormal conditions.

Mechanical considerations:

 The insulation must be capable of withstanding the mechanical stresses imposed on it while
manufacturing.
 The insulation must be capable of withstanding the mechanical stresses which are developed in
the winding due to electromagnetic phenomenon.
 The insulation must be design to withstand the stresses produced under abnormal condition for
a specified period of time.

Thermal considerations:

 Considerations of the insulation material used

 Selection of safe maximum operating temperature
 Types of cooling method employed
 Transformer should be designed in such a way that temperature rise should not exceed the
permissible limits under both normal and abnormal conditions.
 The insulation used for conductors of oil immersed transformers is class A type.
Insulation thickness= (5+0.9kv)
Where,

 kv=voltage in kilo volt between a winding and earth or between windings.

 The insulation of transformers is divided in to four types
1, Major insulation
2, Minor insulation
3, Insulation relative to tank
4, insulation between phases
1, Major insulation
 It consists of
 Insulation between windings and grounded core
 Insulation between windings of the same phase

2, Minor insulation

 It consists of
 Insulation between turns
 Insulation between coils
 Insulation between layers
