I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
describe the different modes of reproduction in flowering and
non-flowering plants such as moss, fern, mongo, and others (S5LTIIg-7).
The scope of this module allows you to use it in many different learning
situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students.
The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the
order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you
are now using.

This SLM contains:

 Lesson 1 –Different Modes of Reproduction in Flowering and

Non-Flowering Plants

After going through these module, you are expected to

1. describe the modes of reproduction in flowering plants and

non-flowering plants,
2. identify some examples of plants as a result of sexual and
asexual reproduction,
3. Identify the examples of cone-bearing plants and spore-bearing
plants, and
4. recognize the importance of the different modes of reproduction in
flowering plants and non-flowering plants.

Lesson Overview

Plant reproduction is the method of producing new plants. Plants reproduce

through the process of either sexual or asexual reproduction. Sexual
reproduction is the formation of new plants in which male and female gametes
(sperm and egg cells) unite. Asexual reproduction is the formation of new plants
without the union of gametes. Parts of the plants like stem, root and leaf are used
for the production of new plants.
Plants are grouped into flowering and non-flowering plants. See their
characteristics in Table 1 below.

Reproduction in Flowering plants

Most flowering plants reproduce by sexual reproduction through pollination.

When a sperm (pollen grain) unite with an egg cell (ovule) inside the ovary of a
flower, fertilization occurs and a fruit developed. The developed fruit carries some
of the unfertilized ovules, which become the seeds. When the fruit matures it
opens and the seeds fall down. The seeds start to germinate and form new
seedlings.

Mung Beans or “monggo” are the tiny seeds of a bean plant. As the plant
matures, small, pale yellow flowers will appear in clusters off 12 to 15 towards the
top of mung bean plant. The flower are self-pollinating and do not require wind
or insects. When pollen (male portion) comes in contact with the female portion
of the plant, sperm is released and travels down through the stigma into the
ovary, where fertilization occurs. The fertilized ovule will form a bean pod inside
it are seeds developed. The bean pod eventually dry, at which point the seeds
are ready for germination and life cycle begin again.

Reproduction in Non-Flowering plants

Non-flowering plants reproduce by both sexual and asexual reproduction.

Guide Questions
1. Flowering plants differ mainly in their mode of reproduction. Flowering
plants produce flowers, fruits and seeds used to reproduce, or make new
plants like them. Non-flowering plants do not produce flowers and fruits but
produce seeds and spores which are used to reproduce, or make new plants just
like them.
2. What are the distinguishing characteristics of mosses, ferns, and gymnosperms?
Mosses- the spores grow on the underside of moss dry out and fall off the plant
carried away by the wind and begin to grow into a new plant when exposed to a
moist environment.
Ferns- most ferns reproduce sexually using spores. Casings of matured ferns dry
out and spores are released into the air
Gymnosperms- reproduce using their cones (male or female). Male cones release
pollen carried by the wind. Pollen lands on a female cone, then the female cone will
produce seeds used to reproduce, or make a new plant.
3. The flower of mung beans plants is self-pollinating. When pollen (male portion)
comes in contact with the female portion of the plant, sperm is released and travels
down through the stigma into the ovary, where fertilization occurs. The fertilized
ovule will form a bean pod inside it are seeds developed. The bean pod eventually
dry, at which point the seeds are ready for germination and begin the life cycle
again.
Reflection
Why is there a need for plants to reproduce?
Reproduction, sexual or asexual, is the key to genetic diversity and survival.
Plants are very important to humans and animals. They provide us what we need
such as food, oxygen, shelter, clothing, water, medicine and many more. And, as a
steward of God’s creations, it is our duty to take good care of them.
