Quarter 1 Lesson 5.4

Operating System Features

I. LEARNING SKILLS
A. Curriculum Guide
1. Identify and Comprehend Operating System features and functions.
SSP_TLE-CT7COIN -Ie-2.4

B. Objectives
1. Define the Operating System.
2. Understand the Operating System Features and Functions.
3. Identify the operating system features and functions.

II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

An Operating System or OS is a large, complex collection of software

that manages the computer. All communication between the central processor
and the keyboard, mouse, screen, computer disk and network are controlled by
the operating system. It is the operating system that detects the click of a button
or the movement of the mouse. Other programs cannot communicate with these
peripheral devices directly.

Information Sheet:
They have to ask the operating system to carry out these tasks.

An Operating System Software performs each of the function:
A. Process Management: - Process management helps OS to create and
delete processes. It also provides mechanisms for synchronization and
communication among processes.

B. Memory Management: - Memory management module performs the task of

allocation and de-allocation of memory space to programs in need of this
resources.

C. File Management: - It manages all the file-related activities such as

organization storage, retrieval, naming, sharing, and protection of files.

D. Device Management: Device management keeps tracks of all devices. This

module also responsible for this task is known as the I/O controller. It also
performs the task of allocation and de-allocation of the devices.

E. Input/ Output Management: One of the main objectives of any OS is to hide

the peculiarities of that hardware device from the user.

F. Secondary-Storage Management: Systems have several levels of storage

which includes primary storage, secondary storage, and cache storage.
Instructions and data must be stored in primary storage or cache so that a
running program can reference it.

G. Security- Security module protects the data and information of a computer

system against malware threat and authorized access.

H. Command Interpretation: This module is interpreting commands given by

the and acting system resources to process those commands.

I. Networking: A distributed system is a group of processors which do not share

memory, hardware devices, or a clock. The processors communicate with one
another through the network.

J. Job Accounting: Keeping track of time & resource used by various job and
users.

K. Communication Management: Coordination and assignment of compilers,

interpreters, and another software resource of the various users of the
computer systems.

Features of Operating System (OS), Here is a list important features of OS:

A. Protected and supervisor mode.

B. Allows disk access and file systems Device drivers Networking Security
C. Program Execution
D. Memory management Virtual Memory Multitasking

E. Handling Input/ Output operations
F. Manipulation of the file system
G. Error Detection and handling
H. Resource allocation

Activity 3: “Explore and Navigate”

 Explore and document the following features of the assigned operating
system:

 User interface (GUI or command-line interface)

 File management capabilities
 Multitasking functionalities
 Security features
 Hardware management and compatibility
 Use the internet to research additional features and functionalities specific
to the assigned operating system.
 Discussions about similarities and differences between operating systems.
 Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each operating system
based on their features.
