QUESTION 1
Four options are provided as possible answers to the following questions. Each
question has only ONE correct answer. Write only the letter (A – D) next to the
question number (1.1 to 1.6) in the answer book.
1.1 Which ONE of the following physical quantities is a scalar?
A Weight
B Displacement
C Mass
D Velocity (2)

1.2 Which ONE of the following combinations includes TWO vector quantities
and ONE scar quantity?
A Displacement, time, speed.
B velocity, distance, Force.
C Speed, time, acceleration.
D Displacement, acceleration, velocity. (2)

1.3 Which one of the vector diagrams below will have the largest resultant
vector?
A

D (2)

1.4 Two forces Y and Z act on an object which does not move. Which statement
below is correct?
The two forces:

A Are equal.

B Act in the same direction.

C Act in opposite directions.

D Are equal and act in opposite directions. (2)

1.5 Refer to the vector diagram below.

C B
The correct equation in relation to the above vector diagram is…..

A A+C=B

B C+B=A

C A+B=C

D A+B+C=0 (2)

1.6 When two vectors G and H are added, which statement below is WRONG?

The magnitude of their resultant vector:

A Can be equal to G + H

B Can be equal to G - H

C Cannot be smaller than G - H

D Can be bigger than G + H (2)

QUESTION 2
2.1 In the diagram below, a box which is on a smooth surface start moving when
three forces F1, F2 and F3 acts on it.

F2 (15 N)
F3 (80 N) bbbb F1 (100 N)
BOX

2.1.1 Define the term resultant of a number of forces. (2)

2.1.2 Calculate the magnitude and direction of the resultant force acting on
the box. (3)
2.1.3 In which direction will the box move? Write only LEFT or RIGHT. (1)
2.2 A rectangular block is vertically suspended by two forces F1 (500 N) and F2
(500 N) in the strings as shown below.

F1 F2

W (400 N)

The weight of the block lifted is 400 N.

2.2.1 Give a reason why the forces in the diagram above are referred to as
vectors. (2)
2.2.2 Using a scale of 1cm representing 100 N, draw a scale diagram to
determine the resultant of forces F1, F2 and W.
