4.1 INTRODUCTION
The NDJ-5S viscometer measures the fluid viscosity at a given shear rates. Viscosity is a measure of a
fluid‘s resistance to flow.
The principle of operation is to drive a spindle (which is immersed in the test fluid) through a
calibrated spring. The viscous drag of the fluid against the spindle is measured by the spring deflection.
Spring deflection is measured by the rotary transducer. The measurement range is determined by the
rotational speed of the spindle, the container the spindle is rotating in, and the full-scale torque of the
calibrated spring.
Viscosity appears in units of centipoises (shown as “cps” or centi Poise per seconds (shown as CPS) on
the display.

4.3 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
After the power is turned on, the viscometer must be autozeroed. This action is performed each
time the power switch is turned on. Fill the unit with liquid before connecting it to the power
supply.
Turn the power switch (located on the real panel) to the ON position. This will result in the
following screen display.

Press up/down or side keys to set the parameters as given on the above screen:
After setting auto mode and rotor, press ok, the instrument begins to measure automatically,
search appropriate speed gradually.
Finally, display the measure result or the required rotor number automatically.
Viscometers are provided with a four set of spindles and a narrow guard leg. The spindles are attached
to the viscometer by screwing them to the lower shaft. Not that the spindles have a left-hand thread.
The lower shaft should be held in left hand and lifted up. The spindles should be screwed to the left.
The face of the spindle nut and the matching surface on the lower shaft should be smooth and clean to
prevent eccentric rotation of the spindle. Spindles can be identified by the number on the side of the
spindle nut.
4.4 Out of Range
NDJ-5S recommends taking viscosity readings between 10% and 100%of scale. It gives
indications for out-of-range specifications or out-of range-operation. When % (Torque) readings
exceed 100.0% (over-range), the display changes to that shown in screen below.
