AVI ROBO
Oh! Robo! Can you tell me what is Input Sure Avi ! Let us Understand..
and Output?
CONCEPT OF INPUT-OUTPUT
❑ You must have observed around you, When you put water in a
freezer after the cooling/freezing process, you get the ice-cubes
similarly putting fruits in the juicer will give you the fresh juice.

❑ Almost all the systems and the machines that we find around us
work in the similar manner.

❑ Therefore, whatever we put inside the machine is called INPUT after

the processing we get the result or OUTPUT.

IPO Cycle

Input- process -Output cycle is used in computers also.

A computer receives data as input, processes it and then
produces output. This is also termed as IPO Cycle.

INPUT PROCESS OUTPUT

The processing of computer is divided into three steps-

INPUT- PROCESS- OUTPUT

Input refers to the facts and Process is done inside Output is the result
instructions which are given the CPU on the input given by the computer
to the computer by the user. given by the user.
after processing.
Robo! now I can also define a
computerComputer
as as……
An electronic machine
that takes the input,
process it to give the result or Output.
Fact File
Data : Facts in the form of text, numbers or pictures etc. fed into
the computer randomly is called data.

Information : Data when processed becomes the information, in

other words meaningful data is called information.
Let’s understand working of computer in terms of IPO cycle

❑ Input: Data or instructions

given to the computer for
getting some meaningful
information or result.

❑ Process: The CPU performs

useful operations by manipulating
the data. This manipulation is
called processing.

❑ Output: The result that we get

after processing upon the data is
called the output.

INPUT DEVICES
The devices by means of which we give the input to the
computer for processing are called Input devices. Let us
know about some of the commonly used Input devices: -
Examples of Input devices
KEYBOARD The keyboard is the most frequent and widely used input device
for entering data into a computer. It has various types of keys on
it for typing such as -Alphabetic keys, Numeric keys, special
keys and Function keys.

MOUSE The most common pointing device is the mouse. The mouse is
used to move the cursor across the screen while clicking and
dragging. It is mainly used with the desktop computer.

TOUCH PAD A touchpad allows us to move our finger across a pressure

sensitive pad and press it to perform click action. It is mostly
used in Laptops.
INTERACTIVE WHITE -BOARD An Interactive WhiteBoard (IWB), also known as smart board, is
a large interactive display board. It can either be a
standalone touchscreen computer used independently to
perform tasks and operations, or a connectable device used as
a touchpad to control computers from a projector. They are used
in classrooms at all levels of education, corporate meetings,
training rooms etc.
Examples of Input devices
MICROPHONE A microphone (or mic) is a device that allows you to record voices or
sounds and store them into computers, in a digital form. Microphones can
be of the following types:
Free Standing: This type of mic. is tall and is usually the least expensive.

Headset/Ear hook Style: This type of mic is integrated with the

headphone to form a Headset.
WEB CAMERA A webcam is a computer-connected tiny digital video camera. It’s also
known as a web camera because it can take images and record videos. It
is either built inside the computer (for example a laptop) or attached
through a USB connection.

JOYSTICK A joystick is a pointing device that is used to move the cursor on a

computer screen. You can move the joystick in all four directions. The
joystick’s function is comparable to that of a mouse. It is mainly used in
playing video games on the computer.
Examples of Input devices
GRAPHIC-TABLET A graphics tablet (also known as a digitizer, digital graphic tablet
or pen tablet) is a computer input device that enables a user to
hand-draw images or graphics, with a special pen-like stylus,
similar to the way a person draws images with a pencil and
paper.
TOUCH SCREEN Touch screen is very popular input device and can be seen in
smart phones, tablets, ATM machines etc. We can give input by
touching the graphical icons to execute the commands associated
with them.

SCANNER A scanner is an input device that functions similarly to a

photocopier. Scanner collects images from the source and
Hand-Held Scanner
converts them to a computer understandable or digital format that
may be saved on a disc. Before they are printed, these images
can be modified.
Flat-Bed Scanner
OUTPUT DEVICES
The devices by means of which we get the result after processing
are called Output devices. Let us know about some of the commonly
used Input devices: -
Examples of Output devices
MONITOR A computer monitor is an output device that shows result after processing
by the CPU. The output generated by the monitor is also called soft copy.
Screen monitors are used in many computer devices, from personal
computers (PCs) and laptops to small mobile devices, such as cell phones
and MP3 players. Monitors are also known as computer screens or Video
Display Unit (VDU).
SPEAKERS Computer speakers are the most common output devices used with a
computer. The speakers are used to give audio output from the computer. In
laptops and tablets they are inbuilt.

HEADPHONES The headphones are output devices that are either plugged in the computer
or can be wireless. We can listen to audio without disturbing others.
Headphones come in various shapes and sizes.
Examples of Output devices

PRINTER It is a device that accepts the output and transmits the processed data to
the printer, on a paper. The output generated by a printer is also called
hard copy.
INK-JET PRINTER
INK-JET PRINTER
Inkjet printers use liquid ink to print. These are economical and hence
very popular.

LASER PRINTER
LASER PRINTER
Laser printers use laser light and a dry powder called toner to print. They
are very fast and provide the best print quality.
Examples of Output devices

3-D PRINTER 3-D printer helps to generate a 3-D model of the computer-
generated output.

It is a method of creating a three-dimensional object layer-by-

layer using a computer created design. The material used for

Now a days 3D printing is becoming popular in the education

sector for showing 3-D models of science and other subjects
.Personalized models of art and dolls ,3D printed chocolates or to
design a 3-D model of a building etc.

Examples of Output devices
PROJECTOR A projector is an output device that can take images produced by a computer
and project them onto a screen or surface. Projectors are used in classrooms,
offices, auditoriums and also at places of worship, as it enables a group of
people to watch videos, presentations, or pictures generated from a single
computer.
PLOTTER Plotters are used to print graphical output on paper. It interprets computer
commands and makes line drawings on paper using automated pens. It is
capable of producing graphs, drawings, charts, maps etc
SPEECH- GENERATING The speech-generating device, also known as voice output communication
DEVICE aids, converts the text to speech. This device is useful for individuals suffering
from speech impairments.

BRAILLE READER A Braille Reader is an electronic device that allows a visually impaired person
to read the text displayed on the monitor screen.
The computer sends a text to the Braille Reader, where it is translated into
Braille format and displayed by raising rounded pins through a flat surface.
ACTIVTY-PROJECT WORK
❑ Prepare a collage of Input- Output devices.

❑ List all the available Input and Output devices

in your Computer Lab.

Design your favourite Input and Output devices
(any two) using Ms Paint /Tux Paint software.
