QUESTION 1
A capacitor with glass and paper dielectric material has relative permittivity of the glass =
8.36 and that of paper = 2.42. This capacitor consists of two metal plates with areas of
1.6 x 106mm2 and are spaced 4.20mm apart. The space between the metal plates is filled
with a glass dielectric of 3.40mm thick and the rest, a layer of paper dielectric material.

1.1 Calculate the total capacitance.

1.2 Calculate the electric field strength in each dielectric due to a potential difference
of 220V between the plates.
[15]

QUESTION 2

Discuss the five characteristics of lines of magnetic flux.

[10]

QUESTION 3

3.1 A 480cm long conductor is placed at a right angle to the magnetic field. When the
conductor is moved through a magnetic field at a speed of 1.782m.s-1. Calculate
the magnetic flux density of the field if the e.m.f generated in the conductor is
12.4V. (5)

3.2 A four-pole generator has a magnetic flux of 14.4mWb per pole. The armature is
driven at 750r/min. Calculate the average value of the e.m.f generated in one of
the armature conductors while it is moving through the magnetic flux of one pole.

1
Consider the magnetic circuit in Figure 1 above. The total length of the magnetic circuit
is 360mm (including the two airgaps), The cross-sectional area of the circuit is 160cm2.
The circuit has a magnetic flux density of 0.35T. (Assume that there is NO flux leakage
or fringing takes place).

4.1 Sketch the magnetising curve (B vs. H curve) for the material as given in the
following table below. (B vs. H curve) (5)

Flux density, B (T) 0,18 0,24 0,35 0,48 0,57

Magnetic field strength, H 240 335 420 530 625
(A/m)

4.2 Calculate the m.m.f required to produce a flux of 5.6mWb in the air gaps. (8)
4.3 Calculate the value of the relative permeability of the material. (2)
