DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

SUBJECT: HEATING VENTILATION & AIR-CONDITIONING (ME-3303)
COMPLEX ENGINEERING PROBLEM [CLO4 ,PLO3]
(Report Submission Due Date : 30th June 2024)

A. Problem Statement

This complex engineering problem aims to design an HVAC (cooling) system using
Hourly Analysis Program (HAP) for a building floor comprising offices / lecture rooms
/ laboratories in Karachi, Pakistan. The considered space should have atleast three (3)
zones.

The scope of the project must, at a minimum deliver complete cooling load calculations,
as per the relevant ASHRAE standards. The students must select and size central cooling
equipment for the given space. The cooling system has to be designed to provide the best
thermal human comfort by ensuring the minimum requirements of indoor air quality
(IAQ) are met.

B. Tasks Related to HVAC System Design

I. Construction Plan
Sketch the construction plan of the space for which the HVAC system is required
to be designed. The construction plan should include the dimensions of all the
subspaces (rooms, windows, doors etc.), the directions and the identification of
subspaces that will remain unconditioned. Also, mention the exact location where
your selected space is located.

II. Selection of Input Parameters and Operating Schedule

Select and report the following:
a. Design values for outdoor summer dry-bulb temperature, mean coincident wet-
bulb temperature, and the daily average temperature range.
b. Indoor design temperature (for both occupied and unoccupied cases)
appropriate for the activities to be carried out in the space.
c. The thickness, density, specific heat, and thermal resistance of all building
materials that most appropriately suit the construction of walls, roofs,
partitions and floors of the considered space.
d. The glazing, frame, internal shading and external shading type of windows that
most appropriately suit the considered space.
e. The type of door that most appropriately suit the considered space (if required).
f. The details of overhead lighting, task lighting, electrical equipment and people.
In addition, the operating schedule of each of internal load should be specified
for each subspace.

III. Estimated Heat-Transfer Coefficients

Estimate and report the following:
a. The heat-transfer coefficients for the building components (walls, roofs,
partitions and floors) in each enclosing surface.
b. The heat-transfer coefficients for windows.
c. The heat-transfer coefficient of door (if required).

IV. Infiltration Requirements

Either using ACH or crack method, estimate and report the rate of infiltration of
outside air.

V. Ventilation Requirements
For ventilation requirement of outside air, select type of each space usage and
report values of CFM from ASHRAE standards.

VI. Selection of Parameters of Air-Conditioning System

Assume the rooms in the selected space will be air-conditioned by one rooftop unit
serving multiple zones with variable air volume. In this regard, report the most
appropriate selections for the following:

a. Airflow control type

b. Appropriate ventilation sizing method
c. Damper leak rate
System
d. Supply temperature
Components e. Coil bypass factor
f. Supply fan type, configuration and fan full load performance value
g. Type of duct system
h. Diversity factor of loads
i. Thermostat schedule.
Zone
j. Terminal Type (in case of reheating, also report the reheat coil heat
Components source)
k. Minimum Airflow
Sizing
l. Safety factors for sizing
Data
VII. Estimation of Cooling Load
Simulate all the spaces in the designed system and report the cooling load
requirements of each zone.

VIII. Energy Requirements and Annual Operational Cost

Select per unit cost of electricity, simulate and report the overall energy
requirement and annual operational cost of air-conditioning system.

IX. Cost Saving Solution

Propose modifications in your system to reduce the annual overall operating cost
of the air-conditioning system atleast by 15%. Backup your claim with the
simulation of the system with proposed modifications and report the results.

C. Deliverables
1. Submission of softcopy of HAP project file.
2. Submission of the soft and hard copies of report demonstrating step-by-step
working of all tasks mentioned in section B.
3. Submission of soft and hard copies of reports generated by HAP for both
baseline and modified cases.
