API PLAN – 53 AND THERMOSYPHON POT OVERVIEW

1. Thermosyphon pot will have to be mounted at a height of 2 m. from the

pump centerline.

2. Provision for Nitrogen purging will have to be done so that the

thermosyphon pot can be pressurized. In the event this is not available
then a suitable arrangement will have to be made. Thermosyphon pot has
been provided with a hand pump on the side. This is for making up the loss
in buffer liquid during operation. This hand pump should NOT to be used
for pressurizing the pot. The pot will have to be pressurized only with an
inert gas such as Nitrogen. Thermosyphon pot needs to be pressurized
only then will the buffer media enter stuffing box. Pot will have to
pressurized at a pressure that is 2 bar higher than stuffing box pressure.
Stuffing box pressure = 25% of Discharge Pressure. It is recommended to
only half fill the thermosyphon pot i.e. up to halfway mark balance volume
needs to be empty for nitrogen to pressurize the pot.

3. Thermosyphon pot has cooling water inlet and outlet which will have to
be connected with cooling water coming in from cooling tower.

4. Kindly check compatibility of buffer media with your process media. We

recommend that water is the best choice of this buffer media since it has
the best lubricity and the best heat carrying capacity. It may please be
noted that a very minute quantity of this buffer media will come in contact
with the process media hence care must be taken while selecting buffer
media. Since the buffer media will be circulated through the
thermosyphon pot which is made from SS316, buffer media will have to be
compatible with SS316.

5. Pump has been supplied with a pair of SS hoses. One hose is for seal
inlet which is at the bottom on the stuffing box and the other is for seal
outlet which is on the top of the stuffing box. Both inlet and outlet
connections have been provided with SS adapters to fit the respective
hoses. The other end of the inlet hose from seal stuffing box goes to the
bottom connection of the thermosyphon pot and the other end of the outlet
hose from seal stuffing box goes to the side of the thermosyphon pot.

6. Buffer media enters stuffing box from thermosyphon pot by the

principle of pressure differential hence the word syphon. Buffer media
from stuffing box moves to thermosyphon pot because of temperature
differential hence the word thermo. The cooling coil in the thermosyphon
pot cools the incoming buffer media from stuffing box for onward
recirculation.
