Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, students should be
able to:
• know and understand what is
methodology
• know what are the research concepts and
parts of the method;
• create a research methodology.
Overview:
A research methodology outlines the
methods and steps taken to find and
analyze data on a particular research. It's
how researchers plan their study to meet
their goals using chosen research tools. It
covers key elements like research
approach, design and technique, and how
data is gathered and analyzed.
Research Concepts:
1. Research Approaches

Choosing the research approach — quantitative,

qualitative or mixed — depends on the research
problem, experiences and the audience or reader to
whom the research is intended. (Creswell, 2003)
Research Concepts:
2. Research Designs
Examples of Research Design for
Quantitative: Experimental
Qualitative: Phenomenalogy, Case Study, Grounded
Theory and Narrative
& Mixed Method: Sequential, Concurrent and
Transformative
Research Concepts :
3. Research Techniques

Examples of research techniques are rating behaviors,

field observations, close-ended measures and open-
ended measures. (Creswell, 2003)
Parts of the Method :
The terms used in the method vary
depending on the approach or design
used in the study. When writing the
parts, always go back to the design
and approach of your study.
Parts of the Method :
1. Design
This part states the approach and design or the strategy of
inquiry that will be used in the study. A definition of design
according to an authority need be included. Explicity discuss
on this part if you will be using triangulation.
Parts of the Method :
2 . Population and Locale
This is also termed as a subject and study site or
selection. This Part presents the setting of the study,
the number of respondents, the manner of choosing
the respondents and the rationale behind the choice
of the respondents and/or the settings.
Parts of the Method :
3. Data Gathering Tool
This is also known as instruments, instrumentation or
data measure. This presents the tools and description
of the toolz that will be used in gathering the data.

Example: including a validated interview guide that is

based on a-prior-code or a quantitative result or a
tape recorder, video recorder, validated and
reliability-tested survey/close-ended questionnaire.
Parts of the Method :
4. Data Collection Procedure or
Data Gathering Procedure

This part presents the steps that will be followed in

order to collect data. We have different ways or
strategies in gathering data depending on your
approach, design and population.
Parts of the Method :
5. Data Analysis
This part is also known as data explication, mode of
analysis or treatment of data. It shows how the data will
be treated. It presents the process of systematically
applying statistical and logical techniques to describe and
illustrate, condense, recap and evaluate data.
Parts of the Method :
6 . Ethical Consideration

This is one of the most important parts of

the method for it addresses ethical
concerns in research. At times, this part is
lumped with the data Gathering.
