path followed by a moon travelling around a planet.
Tides: Rising and falling movements of the ocean water.

1. Artificial Satellites: They are spacecrafts sent to orbit a planet. They collect
information and send it back to the earth
2. Tides: The rhythmic rising and falling movements of the ocean water due to
gravitational pull of the sun and the moon on the earth is called tides.
3. An eclipse: Partial or total obscuring of one celestial body (eg: The sun,
the moon, the earth) by another is called an eclipse.
4. Phases of moon: The moon is always round . The changes in the
appearance of its shape are called the phases of the moon.

F) Answer the following questions.

Q1. Is there any life on the moon? If no, why?
Ans. There is no life on the moon as it has no water and air which are the basics
of the living things to survive.
Q2. Describe the surface of the moon.
Ans. The surface of the moon is rough and uneven. It is a bare rocky desert. It
has dark patches called craters on its surface formed by the crash of meteorites.
Q3. How are tides caused? What do you understand by the low tide and high
tide?
Ans. Tides are caused by combined gravitational pull of the sun and the moon on
the earth. When the pull of the water on the side of the earth facing the moon is
more, high tides are caused on the side of the earth. The same happens on the
opposite side of the earth. In the area between two high tides the water forms low
tides because the water has moved to the region of high tides.
Q4. When does an eclipse occur?
Ans. An eclipse occurs when the sun, the earth and the moon come in a straight
line.
Q5. Why are eclipses sometimes total and at other times partial?
Ans. When the earth’s shadow covers the complete disc of the moon, we can’t
see the moon at all and it is called a total lunar eclipse. When it partially covers
the disc of the moon there is partial lunar eclipse.
Same way when moon casts shadow on the earth and sun can’t be seen at all, it
is called total solar eclipse and if only a part of sun is seen then it is called partial
solar eclipse.
Note: Drawing of Solar Eclipse and Lunar eclipse to be done in notebook.
