2: Let x and y be rational and irrational numbers, respectively. Is (x + y) necessarily an irrational number? Give an
example in support of your answer.
Ans: If a number can be represented in the form a/b where both the numerator and the denominator are integers, it is considered
a rational number.
If a number cannot be readily furthered to any fraction of a natural number and an integer, it is deemed irrational. Irrational
numbers have no finite or recurrent decimal expansion.
Yes, if x and y are rational and irrational numbers, respectively, then x+ y is an irrational number.
For example,
Let x = 5 and y = √2.
Then, x+y = 5 + √2 = 5 + 1.414… = 6.414...
Here, 6.414 is a non-terminating and non-recurring decimal and therefore is an irrational number.
Hence, x + y is an irrational number.

12: If a = 6 + 2√3, then find the value of a – 1 /a.

Solution
Given a = 6 + 2√3
⇒ (1/a) = 1 / (6+ 2√3)
Multiply and divide by (6 − 2√3)

⇒ (1/a) = (6 − 2√3) / [(6 +2√3)(6 − 2√3)]

⇒ (1/a) = (6 − 2√3) / [36 − 12]

⇒ (1/a) = (6 − 2√3) /24

∴ a-1/a

→ (6+2√3) - (6-2√3)/24

→ {24(6+2√3) - 6 + 2√3}/24

→ {144+48√3-6+2√3}/24

→ {138+50√3}/24

→ 138/24 + 50√3/24

25. Prove that √3 + √5 is an irrational number.

Answer: To prove that √3 +√5 is an irrational number.

Assume that the total of √3 +√ 5 is a rational number.
Now, it can be written in the form a/b:
a/b = √3 + √5
a and b are coprime numbers
and b ≠ 0
Solving
√3 + √5 = a/b
On squaring both sides, we get,
(√3 + √5)2 = (a/b)2
(√3)2 + (√5)2+ 2(√5)(√3) = a2/b2
3 + 5 + 2√15 = a2/b2
8 + 2√15 = a2/b2
2√15 = a2/b2 – 8
√15 = (a2– 8b2)/2b
Here a and b are integers, then (a2-8b2)/2b is a rational number.
Then √15 is also a rational number.
However, this is incompatible because 15 is an irrational number.
Our assumption is incorrect.
√3 + √5 is an irrational number.
Hence, proved.
26. Represent the following on the number line (i): √6 (ii): √7
Let O be the origin on the line l.
Let A be on the line such that OA=1.
Draw AB perpendicular to OA at A such that AB=1. Then
OB2=OA2+AB2=12+12=2 Thus OB= √2.
With O as centre and OB as radius draw an arc cutting the line at C.
Then OC=OB=√2
Again draw CD prependicular to l such that CD=1. Then
OD2=OC2+CD2=2+1=3. Thus OD=√3.
Draw an arc with O as centre and OD as radius to cut l in E. Then OE=OD=3.
Draw EF prependicular to l at E such that EF = 2 and join OF. Now
OF2=OE2+EF2=3+4=7.
Hence OF=7. With O as centre and OF as radius, cut l at G.
Then OG=OF=√7.
Thus G represents √7 on the line l.
27. Visualise the representation of 5.37 on the number line upto 5 decimal places.

We know that 5.37¯ will lie between 5 and 6. So, we locate 5.37¯ between 5 and 6. We divide this portion of the number line
between 5 and 6 into 10 equal parts and use a magnifying glass to visualize 5.37¯.5.37¯ lies between 5.37 and 5.38. To
visualize 5.37¯ more accurately we use a magnifying glass to visualize between 5.377 and 5.378. Again, we divide the portion
between 5.377 and 5.378 into 10 equal parts and visualize more closely to represent 5.37¯ as given in the figure. This is located
between 5.3778 and 5.3777.

100X = 68.6868 -------(2)
Subtract equation (1) from equation (2)
100X = 68.6868
X = 0.6868
------------
99X = 68
X = 68/99 [ P/Q form ]

Ans:
(iv) √ 28 / 343 =√ 2×2×7 / √ 7×7×7 =2√ 7 / 7√ 7 =2 / 7 Hence, it is a rational number.

(vii) 0.5918, it is a number with terminating decimal, so it can be written in the form of p / q, where q≠0, p and q are integers.
Hence, it is a rational number.

x) 1.010010001 …….. is a number with non-terminating non-recurring decimal expansion. Hence, it is an irrational numbe

30. Prove that √3 is an irrational number. (2 marks)

Solution : Let us assume that √3 is a rational number

That is, we can find integers a and b (≠ 0) such that √3 = (a/b)
Suppose a and b have a common factor other than 1, then we can divide by the common factor, and assume that a and b are
coprime.
√3b = a
⇒ 3b2=a2 (Squaring on both sides) → (1)
Therefore, a2 is divisible by 3
Hence ‘a’ is also divisible by 3.
So, we can write a = 3c for some integer c.
Equation (1) becomes,
3b2 =(3c)2
⇒ 3b2 = 9c2
∴ b2 = 3c2
This means that b2 is divisible by 3, and so b is also divisible by 3.
Therefore, a and b have at least 3 as a common factor.
But this contradicts the fact that a and b are coprime.
This contradiction has arisen because of our incorrect assumption that √3 is rational.
So, we conclude that √3 is irrational.
3×2√3 is irrational because when a number is multiplied with an irrarional number we get an irrarional number.
31. Find two irrational number between 3 and 6 (2 marks)

32. Prove that √3 + √5 is an irrational number. (3 marks)
o prove that √3 +√5 is an irrational number.
Assume that the total of √3 +√ 5 is a rational number.
Now, it can be written in the form a/b:
a/b = √3 + √5
a and b are coprime numbers
and b ≠ 0
Solving
√3 + √5 = a/b
On squaring both sides, we get,
(√3 + √5)2 = (a/b)2
(√3)2 + (√5)2+ 2(√5)(√3) = a2/b2
3 + 5 + 2√15 = a2/b2
8 + 2√15 = a2/b2
2√15 = a2/b2 – 8
√15 = (a2– 8b2)/2b
Here a and b are integers, then (a2-8b2)/2b is a rational number.
Then √15 is also a rational number.
However, this is incompatible because 15 is an irrational number.
Our assumption is incorrect.
√3 + √5 is an irrational number.
Hence, proved.
