To know more about 3-way switch, let us first define the
meaning of it.

switch that makes it possible to control a ceiling light or other
electrical fixture from two different locations in a room.

Student G. A 3-way switch is one that allows you to control a

ceiling light (or other electrical fixture) from two separate
locations.

3-way switches are used to control lights with two switches.

These switches do not have an on/off position like single-
pole switches. Unfortunately, not all 3-way switches are
wired the conventional way. See Alternate 3-Way Switch

Conventional 3-Way Switch Wiring Configuration – can

Student j: All of the switch shown below are 3-way. 3-way

switches have three terminals, one common (usually black
color) and one pair of travelers (usually brass color).

With conventional wiring, the common wire from one

switch connects to the line, the common wire from the
other switch connects to the load (lights). The pair of
travelers on one switch connects to the pair of travelers
on the other switch. 7 Usually, the common wire is
wrapped around the traveler wires for identification in
the 3-way light switch electrical boxes

Using the traveler system, there are four possible

permutations of switch positions: two with the light on
and two with the light off.

2. Prepare Materials Needed.

b) Screw driver (Philip and flat)
c) Multi tester
3. Install single bulb controlled by 3-way switches in

4. Test if there is fault or shortage in the circuit.
5. Test run.

Moments of Realizations: In building wiring, multiway switching is the interconnection

of two or more electrical switches to control an electrical load
1. What is the purpose of a three-way light switch? (often, but not always, lighting) from more than one location.
When analyzing this circuit, it is critically important to have a
solid understanding of the concepts that pertain to 3- way
switches. Since the type of connections are used in multiway
switching, the concepts associated with both types of circuits
apply to the respective parts of the circuit.
