1 Two bodies A and B. A contains the charge 0.8 10 C . B contains the charge 3.2 10 C . 1
Which is practically possible?
2 In Fig.1.1, two positive charges 𝑞2 and 𝑞3 fixed 1
along the y axis, exert a net electric force in the + x
direction on a charge 𝑞1 fixed along the x axis. If a
positive charge Q is added at (x, 0), the force on q1
(a) shall increase along the positive x-axis.
(b) shall decrease along the positive x-axis.
(c) shall point along the negative x-axis.
(d) shall increase but the direction changes
because of the interaction of Q with 𝑞2 and 𝑞3 .
3 Figure 1.5 shows electric field lines in which an electric dipole p is placed as shown. Which of 1
the following statements is correct?
(a) The dipole will not experience any force.
(b) The dipole will experience a force towards right.
(c) The dipole will experience a force towards left.
(d) The dipole will experience a force upwards. (Exemplar)
4 Select one of the codes (a), (b), (c) and (d) given below. 1
(a) Assertion is correct, reason is correct; reason is a correct explanation for assertion.
(b) Assertion is correct, reason is correct; reason is not a correct explanation for assertion
(c) Assertion is correct, reason is incorrect
(d) Assertion is incorrect, reason is correct.
Assertion: Electrostatic field lines start at positive charges and end at negative charges
Reason: Field lines are continuous curves without breaks and they form closed loop.
5 Three-point electric charges +q each are kept at the vertices of an equilateral triangle of side a. 2
Determine the magnitude and sign of the charge to be kept at the centroid of the triangle so
that the charges at the vertices remain in equilibrium
6 State Gauss theorem in electrostatics. Apply this theorem to obtain the expression for the 2
electric field at a point due to an infinitely long, thin, uniformly charged straight wire of linear
charge density λ C m–1.
7 A hollow cylindrical box of length 1 m and area of cross-section 25 cm2 is placed in a three- 2
dimensional coordinate system as shown in the figure. The electric field in the region is given
by 𝐸⃗ = 50x 𝑖̂, t where E is in NC–1 and x are in metres.
Find
(i) net flux through the cylinder.
(ii) charge enclosed by the cylinder.
8 A dipole is made of two charges +q and –q separated by a distance 2a. Derive an expression for 5
the electric field 𝐸⃗𝑒 due to this dipole at a point distant r from the center of the dipole on
equatorial plane. Draw the shape of the graph, between |𝐸⃗𝑒 | and r where r >> a. If this dipole
were to be put in a uniform external electric field E obtain an expression for the torque on
dipole.
