Foreword
The descriptions and service procedures contained in this manual are based on designs
and methods studies carried out up to November 06.

The products are under continuous development. Vehicles and components produced
after the above date may therefore have different specifications and repair methods.
When this is judged to have a significant bearing on this manual, supplementary service
bulletins will be issued to cover the changes.

The new edition of this manual will update the changes.

In service procedures where the title incorporates an operation number, this is a

reference to V.S.T. (Volvo Standard Times).

Service procedures which do not include an operation number in the title are for general
information and no reference is made to V.S.T.

The following levels of observations, cautions and warnings are used in this Service
Documentation:

Note: Indicates a procedure, practice, or condition that must be followed in order to have
the vehicle or component function in the manner intended.

Caution: Indicates an unsafe practice where damage to the product could occur.

Warning: Indicates an unsafe practice where personal injury or severe damage to the
product could occur.

Danger: Indicates an unsafe practice where serious personal injury or death could occur.

1 Turn off the ignition so that the control unit can be reset.

2 Wait at least five seconds.

3 Turn on the ignition without applying the footbrake.

4 Wait at least five seconds.

5 Gradually and steadily press on the foot brake pedal

until it is fully applied (it should take at least one
second from fully released to fully applied).

6 Keep the foot brake fully applied for at least seven

seconds.

7 Slowly release the footbrake (it should take at least

seven seconds from it being fully applied until it is
fully released).

8 Switch off the ignition, switch it back on again and

check the fault codes.

If it takes more than 25 seconds to perform steps

5, 6 and 8, the fault codes will not be deleted
or deactivated.

After the reset test has been completed, the fault

codes which have been rectified should be deleted or
deactivated. Otherwise the fault codes will remain.

Modulator Designation Sensor, wheel speed

General information
The wheel speed sensor is connected to a modulator
which converts the signal to speed. This speed is used to
determine braking force and brake behaviour.

The wheel speed sensor registers the wheel’s speed

using a sensor wheel which is fitted to the wheel hub.
For the wheel speed sensor to function correctly, it is
important that the distance between the sensor and
the sensor wheel is small and constant throughout the
complete rotation. The distance should be less than 0.7
mm.

SID Designation

2 Wheel sensor ABS axle front 1 right

a wheel speed sensor and a sensor wheel is too great

5 Wheel sensor ABS axle left 3 spin. This can result in the electrically controlled gearbox
having difficulties with gear shifting. After a period of time,
6 Wheel sensor ABS axle 3 Right a fault code for too great distance is set.

PSID Designation Note: If the tyre dimensions change on any of the axles,
so that the tyre on the driving axle is smaller than those
70 Wheel speed sensor, 4th axle, left wheel on the other axles, the slippery road symbol will be
displayed. Engine torque is then limited until the vehicle
71 Wheel speed sensor, 4th axle, right wheel
has adapted to the new tyre sizes. This can also occur if
72 Wheel speed sensor, 5th axle, left wheel the control unit is replaced or the parameters are reset,
so that earlier tyre changes again become noticeable.
73 Wheel speed sensor, 5th axle, right wheel

The EBS control unit carries out an adaptation for

differences in tyre sizes between the axles, when the
vehicle is driven at a constant speed (25-100 kph). If the
difference is too great, FMI13 will be set.

The axles in EBS Gen3 are always dynamically allocated

in the same way. This means that the first axle on the
vehicle is designated as axle 1, the second as axle 2 etc.,
irrespective of the variant.

SID/PSID Designation
General information SID 7 Modulator axle 1, left side
The modulator is a modulator with built in electronics
that control braking. The modulator uses wheel speed SID 8 Modulator axle 1, right side
sensors and wear sensors to determine brake behaviour.
SID 9 Modulator axle 2, left side
Each modulator is connected to the EBS control unit via a
SID 10 Modulator axle 2, r ight side
CAN link. Each modulator receives information via the link
on how much brake force is to be applied and when the SID 11 Modulator axle 3, left side
brakes should be released. Each modulator also sends
SID 12 Modulator axle 3, r ight side
information on the CAN link to the EBS control unit, for
example information on wheel speed and brake pad wear. PSID 66 Modulator axle 4, left side
The modulator has a compressed air back-up system, PSID 67 Modulator axle 4, right side
meaning that the brakes can always be applied.

MID 136 SID 66 Modulator trailer

General
The trailer modulator supplies the trailer with air and
controls the service brake on the trailer.

On trailers without EBS, braking force is actively controlled

by the trailer modulator so that each part of the vehicle
train brakes its own part. The trailer modulator can adjust
the pressure to the trailer +1,5/-0,5 bar in relation to the
brake pressure for the tractor unit. This adjustment is
automatic during driving and can not be programmed or
changed.

The trailer modulator is located in front of the battery box

and consists of three valves and a pressure sensor which
is directly controlled from the control unit.

As for other modulators, the trailer modulator has a

T5013840
pneumatic back-up system that means that the trailer
always has a control signal to the brakes.

For more information about the trailer modulator, refer to

“Modulator, trailer, signal description” page 15 .
