Introduction
The EDt S software has several local diagnosis programs that you can reach through the Diagnosis menu. It
is possible with these programs to check all individual subsystems independently of one another.
In some diagnosis programs it is possible to intervene deeply into the functional sequence of the X-
ray inspection unit and the communication to the BHS. Safety agreements are indispensable here!
The first step of the diagnosis represents the status display of the system. All important status information
and current error messages are displayed here in running operation.
Depending on the particular project there may be different ways of displaying the system status.
The most important information is always displayed.
The unit being in a correct operating condition, all signals show green.
If a signal is missing, or if an operating condition which momentarily does not permit an inspection has been
set, then the displays are either red for the case of an error or yellow for warning conditions.
In a communication with a BHS, relevant signals for the automatic operating sequence are displayed in fields
with a grey background.
CONV STATE 0
The frequency converter is not switched on and there is
no error message.
0
No baggage code is requested by the baggage handling
system.
0
The BHS switch of the conveyor of the X-ray inspection
unit.
Diagnosis
For safety reasons, the conveyor is also switched on in some test programs that work with the X-ray
generator switched on. The message shown, which must be confirmed, then appears before the X-ray
generator and the conveyor are activated.
Detector lines
When calling up the diagnosis program Detector lines the menu items Line scope and Line test will be
available.
Line scope
It is possible with the Line scope diagnosis program to display graphically the individual line signals, the
supply voltage of the individual lines and the test signal of the lines.
An oscillogram showing the offset voltages of the individual detector channels as percentages appears firstly
on the screen.
Í If you switch on the X-ray generator with the first menu item X-ray generator, you receive the
maximum possible output voltages of the detector channels (full scale values).
You see initially the signal of a line with the gain adapted for the individual detectors for compensati-
on of the different detector sensitivities. The adapted gain is the result of the detector line calibrat-
ion. The permissible range is 25% to 95%.
After selection of a fixed gain factor (see below) you can check the mechanical adjustment of the detector
line and of the X-ray generator by the shape of the signal.
The circle in the upper left corner of the display indicates the direction in which the line signal will
change during the line adjustment.
If the circle rotates to the left, the total of the line signal will be reduced.
If the circle rotates to the right, the total of the line signal will be raised.
Í If you switch off the Update display function you freeze the signal. At the same time the X-ray
generator and the conveyor are also switched off.
Í In the third menu item Detectors you have the possibility of limiting the display to the HIGH or the
LOW detectors (upper/lower radiation spectrum).
Í With selection of a Zoom factor in the fourth menu item you can display details of the Line scope
magnified.
If the number of detector channels exceeds the available space on the screen (with very large units
and in the magnified display), you can select the bar located under the oscillogram with the navigator
Í With Sections you can limit the display of the Line scope to the signal section which is generated by
one of the line interface boards in each case.
Í With the last but one menu item Gain you can switch the gain factors of all detector channels over to
fixed values. You select a gain factor at which the individual output signals do not exceed the 100%
line.
Í In addition to the normal line scope this display indicates the variance between the individual
measured values.
Í In this case the scaling of the indication will also change. A value of variance between 0 and 1000 //00
is indicated and not a value between 0 and 100%. The permissible value of variance must not exceed
the 10 % limit. If the limit is exceeded, then a mechanical adjustment of the line is required.
Í After modifying the line position the display will only stabilize after about 20 seconds.
The variance represents the difference between two raw data values measured within a very short interval
of time. A small variance is a sign of an optimum alignment of X-ray beam and detectors.
A variance exceeding 10 % on the average means that the detector lines have to be readjusted in the
respective section!
Due to the fast evaluation of data, it is quite possible that differences of the belt thickness affect the variance
value. You will notice this as a peak occurring in the horizontal section of the detector line! If a peak is
noticed over the whole detector line, then we have to assume that the X-ray generator is not stable. In such
case you have to check the adjustment of the respective XRC board! If an adjustment of the XRC board does
not improve the situation, then you have to exchange the generator!
Í The last menu item enables you to switch the input signal of the line interface boards LIF from the
Line scope to a test signal or to display the supply voltage of the detector modules connected to
the line interface board.
Test signal
Í The test signal indicates whether the A/D converter of the line interface board is working correctly, or
the order of the connections of the line interface boards to the acquisition controller is correct.
You select the line interface board of interest via Sections (see above).
Detector supply
Í The supply voltage of the detector modules is displayed in the range of 4.75V (=0%) to 5.25V (=100%);
10% correspond to 50mV. The supply voltage must be within this range, if it is 0% or 100%, the
detector modules are not correctly supplied.
To test the correct operation of shutter and calibration slider, the following functions can be activated
separately with the generators being active:
- close shutter (line signal in line scope must fall down to the zero line since shutters
are closed)
- insert calibration samples (line scope shows the characteristic shape of a line signal with the
calibration samples inserted, see following figure).
The changes of the respective line signal in line scope indicate the correct operation of the selected
shutter and calibration slider
The normal operation of shutter and calibration slider can be restored via the „normally controlled“
function.
Line test
The test offers you a list of faulty detector channels. These are channels the output signal of which lies
outside the range intended for the A/D conversion (below 0% and above 100%) and channels the difference
between offset and full scale value of which is less than 10%.
However, defective channels are listed only if at least three neighboring detector channels have an
error.
The detector modules’ limits are projected into the existing X-ray image. This display indicates the position of
faulty modules.
Í If you switch on one of the X-ray generators with menu item X-ray generator, you receive the
further values for the anode current, the high voltage and the heater current with high voltage
switched on.
The occurring error message about the wrong positioning of the shutters must be acknowledged.
This message is not relevant in this function.
Í All shutters are opened with the All shutters open menu item.
Í If you switch on with the All X-ray generators menu item you receive the values for the anode
current, the high voltage and the heater current of all X-ray generators with high voltage
switched on.
Í If you switch off the Update display function you freeze the measured values. At the same time the
X-ray generator and the conveyor are also switched off.
The calibration slider test is started with the Start test and conveyors function. In this case the conveyor is
started, the shutters opened and the calibration sliders moved cyclically into the beam path. In this case the
views for the calibration samples shown adjacently arise.
In this test the time between the output of the START_CALI signal and reaching the end position of the
calibration slides is shown in percent. The values are determined anew each time the calibration slides move
in.
A positive sign of the percent display indicates that the inward movement speed is too high.
A negative sign of the percent display indicates that the inward movement speed is too low.
The adjustment of the shutter speed is satisfactory if the displayed values are within a range of + 5%.
The throttle adjustments of the shutters influence one another mutually, so that the adjustments
may have to be repeated.
Changes of the system pressure also lead to fluctuating results.
If a problem occurs with regard to the calibration sliders then the current X-ray image of the calibration sliders
can be saved on a storage medium indicated. This function will also be available if the X-ray unit is in the
normal operating mode. In such case you have to log in as „Service“ and then call up „ Calibration slider
test“ from the Diagnosis menu. Then you can store the X-ray image of the calibration sliders.
On the following page you find an example showing a perfect calibration slider image.
I/O test
The I/O test enables the input data bits sent from the PI interface board to the HiTraX electronics to be
checked and the output data bits sent from the HiTraX electronics to the PI interface board to be controlled.
Í If you exit the I/O test with after you have changed output data bits, the status set by you is
retained.
Í You receive the original status of all data bits if you select the I/O test again and exit with .
The PI-internal inputs or outputs with the standard signal assignments are listed in the following tables. Refer
to the project-specific circuit diagrams for the exact signal assignment of the inputs and outputs.
Light barriers
It is possible in the Light barriers diagnosis menu to perform a static test of the discrete light barriers or also
to select the test of the light curtain which indicates simultaneously a dynamic test of the light barriers.
Normally light barriers of the type LBT/LBR are built into the X-ray inspection unit. Their transmitters are
switched on and off during the test through the test input to test the correct switching behavior of the
receivers.
The display has the following meaning for the LBT/LBR light barriers:
If other light barriers which cannot be tested dynamically are installed, the display has the following
meaning:
The conveyor must be switched on to test the light curtain. For starting use the switches
and or the corresponding keys on the keyboard.
If a bag is now placed on the conveyor, all signals of the light barriers and of the light curtain are displayed on
the display. The height information of the bag placed on the conveyor is shown in the upper display.
On the other hand, the static light barriers show their status with their high level, whether they are
interrupted or not.
This dynamic test offers the possibility of displaying dynamic errors of the static light barriers.
Here you receive all information about the different supply voltages on the PI. The information about the
existence of these voltages can also be checked on the control LEDs of the PI.
Temperature test
The values of the PI-internal sensor, or of an optionally connected external sensor are queried in this test.
With a call of button „1", Set battery exchange date, you take over the current system date as the new
battery exchange date.
If there is no status information of the UPS available check the function of the serial interface of the
UPS by means of the manufacturer’s diagnostic software.
Ping an address
In this submenu a ping is sent by the acquisition controller to the subscriber with the preselected IP address.
The test is started or interrupted with the START/STOP function. As soon as the test is stopped, a summary
of the transmission and reception protocols is displayed in the display.
This test provides information about the physical availability of a data network and of the addressed
subscriber.
The input mask of the IP address is selected with the IP address function. Here the IP address to which a
ping should be sent must be set.
Transfer rates
This test offers the possibility of checking the transfer rates in the individual network segments. Bottlenecks
in data transfer can thus be shown.
If the test is stopped, a summary of the data transfer in the relevant network segment is displayed.
Interface configuration
Routing table
The routing table contains the information of the individual network segments.
If the transmission test is switched on, then the images stored in the acquisition controller are transferred to
the relevant selected directory on an available evaluation station.
In the image transmission interval the time in which further images should be transferred after reception of
an evaluation result of the image evaluation station is preselected.
An unmistakable identification of the X-ray images in the status display of the evaluation station can be set
with the bag ID prefix.
Passing this test is the major acceptance criterion for the X-ray unit!
The adjustment suitcase is the tool destined to check the adjustment and geometry data of the unit.
The program returns to the overview image and states in the set frame the determined detection probability
and the density of the determined material.
For the test of the material detection you can use adjustment suitcase 34436851 or 34432743. Both
adjustment suitcases are suited to check the geometry data of the HS 10080 EDt S. The basic difference is
the different positioning of the adjustment suitcase on the belt. Due to the different orientation of the
material probes, you will get two different X-ray images.
In the following paragraph you find a description of the different bag contents and the orientation of the
material probes. Evaluation and troubleshooting are the same for both test suitcases.
Í The third foam layer contains 2 Delrin balls (orange mark) and 3
aluminium balls (green mark). There are also 3 small steel balls
(yellow mark) in this layer.
Start the unit and wait for the material calibration to be carried out.
Í Put the suitcase on the input belt (in the middle) so that TOP can be
read and the suitcase's handle is
directed to the system monitor!
Í When the suitcase has left the tunnel, stop the scanning and call up
the function Test of material detection in the Diagnosis menu.
Í For the test the baggage item scanned last is used; the test results are displayed on the unit's monitor.
By means of the adjustment suitcase the technical system functions are checked.
It is a tool suitable for checking the adjustment and geometry of the system, i.e. you can only determine, by
means of the adjustment suitcase, if the unit has been properly adjusted.
The second layer is placed into the suitcase in such a way that
one Delrin ball and one aluminium ball lie over the steel plates.
No ball must lie on top of the big aluminium plate!
Í Start the unit and wait for the material calibration being carried out.
Í Put the suitcase on the input belt (in the middle) so that the big aluminium plate enters the tunnel first.
Í When the suitcase has left the tunnel, stop the scanning and call the function Test of material detection in
the Diagnosis menu.
Í For the test the baggage item scanned last is used; the test results are displayed on the unit's monitor.
Evaluation
In all views the big balls are marked by a red frame and at least 5 small balls are marked by a blue frame.
In system versions ES-03-00-G, ES-03-00-K, ES-03-00-O the small balls are not detected.
The percentages indicated on the evaluated image serve the purpose of internal statistics.
In the Diagnosis report the graphical data of the test suitcase's evaluation is stored as numerical information.
This data serves to archive the evaluation results.
Errors
If not all materials are detected and marked when the test suitcase is scanned for the first time, you have to
have the suitcase scanned once more. If not all marks are set after the second scanning either, you have to
take the following into account:
Correction: Go through all the following points as described in the technical manual:
If not each of the six balls is marked by a frame when repeating the test, you have to repeat the
scanning 10 times. If all balls are detected in at least 5 attempts, then the unit is correctly adjusted.
Correction: Go through all the following points as described in the technical manual:
If, again, not at least 5 small balls are marked by frames, you have to repeat the scanning of the
test suitcase 10 times. If more than 5 small balls are detected in at least 5 attempts, then the unit
has been correctly adjusted.
Correction: Place the test suitcase out of the belt middle and start the
evaluation once more.
Switch off the communication with the HMC during this test!
Possible cause: Instead of the provided test suitcase with the specified
content, a different suitcase was scanned.
Indicator test
The X-RAY ON indicators of the X-ray inspection unit can be checked with the indicator test.
Conveyor test
With the conveyor test you can operate the conveyor, e.g. for its adjustment, without X-ray radiation having to
be switched on. For starting use the switches and or the
corresponding keys on the keyboard.
After starting you receive an indication of the nominal conveying speed, i.e. the speed at which the
conveyor must run so that the software can correctly compute the position of bags in the normal operating
sequence, activate the X-ray generator on time and synchronize image processing.
Continuous test
The continuous test enables you to automatically test the X-ray unit over a longer period.
Í After you have started the test with Start test, the conveyors and the X-ray generators are operated. In
intervals the shutter is opened and the calibration body pushed into the beam path.
If error messages occur during the continuous test, these are acknowledged automatically and counted in the
Error field. If fatal errors occur, then the test is interrupted.
It is also possible to stop the test in the case of simple errors.
The error messages can be seen in the Error report in the Diagnosis menu.
Configuration display
The configuration display provides you with an overview of the current configuration of the system.
Preset software
configuration: Default configuration for EDtS units
Serial number: Serial number of the current unit. This number is required in the case of
inquiries to Smiths Heimann.
PI4 server version: Currently available software version of the PI4 server.
Free IMS memory: Available storage capacity for recording X-ray images.
Unit network name: Name for identification of the X-ray inspection unit in the Smiths Heimann
network.
Reports
Different reports can be selected in the reports menu item.
Error report
All occurring errors are stored in the error report with date, time and error code. The user can scroll through
the file using the navigation keys.
The error report can also be used for remote diagnosis through the network connection.
If the error report is deleted with the key “1", then the corresponding report will be ended and a new error
report is generated.
Login report
You can see in the login report who was registered at which time for the unit and when login procedures
have been interrupted because of wrong IDs or passwords.
Diagnosis report
The diagnosis report is created with each selection of this menu. This can take some time. The newly
generated file is filed analogously to the error report and is then ready for transmission.
When calling up the diagnosis report, the following message will be displayed:
During this time the conveyor belts and generators are switched on several times. The diagnosis being
terminated, the diagnosis report is created.
The diagnosis report contains all important system information which can also be retrieved via the submenus
of the diagnosis menu:
If this report is called up, a list will be generated showing who has logged in on the Acquisition Controller via
the network.
