Three Phase Dual Converters Using Thyristors
 Objective
In this project, we are heading to design a power electronics control system; Dual Converter using
thyristors to:

 To achieve DC polarity from AC rectification using forward and reverse converter.

 To rotate DC motor in both directions (clockwise & anti-clockwise) .
 To control the speed of DC motor.
 Apparatus/Components required
1. 8051 microcontroller
2. Thyristor
3. Crystal oscillator
4. SCR’s
5. Opto Isolator
6. Resistors
7. Capacitors
8. Transistors
9. Cables & connectors
10. Diodes
11. Breadboard
12. LED
13. Transformer
14. Push buttons
15. Switches
16. Operational Amplifiers
17. 12V DC motor
 Working
Three phase dual converter is a control system for power electronics which is designed to attain DC
polarity from AC rectification using forward and reverse converter. Thus, DC motor can be moved in both
directions and also its speed can also be controlled. We give 230V AC to the bridge rectifier to convert it
into DC. Here two conversions take place simultaneously, so that it is called a dual convertor. A separately
excited Dc motor is used as a load. Dual converters provide four quardant operation. When Dc motor is in
forward operation Converter 1 acts as a rectifier, in this operation output voltage and current both are
positive so it lies in 1st quardant. The converter 2 acts as an inverter, in this operation the load current
operates in the same direction but the polarity of output voltage is negative, so it works in 4 th quardant. For
the reverse operation of Dc motor converter 2 acts as a rectifier (2 nd quad) and converter 1 acts as an
inverter (3rd quad). The DC terminals of both the converters are connected with the armature winding of
DC motor. By this quadrant operation of dual converter dc motor can be rotated in both directions and also
its speed can be controlled by the microcontroller.

 Applications
1. Wherever reversible DC is required dual convertors are used
2. Industrial variable speed DC drives
3. Direction and speed control of DC motors.
