1.2 Background of the Project
A brief background to the research project is very important to set the stage.
1.3 Problem Statement/Statement of the Problem
Clearly state or describe the problem you have identified that warrant this research
project.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of the Project

Chapter 2 Literature Review
2.1 Chapter Introduction
Introduce the chapter by telling us what it entails.
2.2 Conceptual and Theoretical Framework/Review
This part discusses the details of existing concepts/ theories upon which the
project is based. The literature review focuses on issues that are more
specifically related to the work in your project. Critical analysis of the relevant
concepts/framework describing prior work in the field is required.

2.3 Empirical/Existing Systems Review

Review related literature based on the chosen topic. Focus on existing systems
relevant to your chosen topic. What has been done over the years, by whom, and
what results have been achieved. Cite very current related works.
2.4 Chapter Summary
Summarize the chapter here.

Chapter 3 Methodology
3.1 Chapter Introduction
Give a brief introduction to the chapter by indicating what the chapter entails.
3.2 Research Design/Approach
This part of the project should discuss the approaches the user intends to use, and
clearly stated reasons for choosing them. What is the plan of action (strategy) that
governs the choice and use of methods /approaches/procedures to investigate the
problem and to provide the solution? Think of how to elicit and analyse data (in the
form of requirements and test results), test your solution, write, etc? Why this
strategy? E.g. experimental, survey, action, case study, etc.
3.3 Research Setting
This part discusses, the cultural, physical or social setting in which the experiment
is conducted. May be more applicable in Lab setting and involves either controlled
or uncontrolled processes and environmental conditions. Where are you carrying out
the research? Describe key aspects of the place relevant to the research. E.g. HR sys.
for a particular organization; where is that organization, what do they do, what is
their HR structure, etc.

3.4 Data (Requirements) Collection Instrument

Appropriate data collection instrument must be employed. This includes interviews,
questionnaires, observation and document analysis for requirements gathering. This
may also include the use of computer tools to generate the appropriate data. Explain
the specific tool(s) (e.g. observation, questionnaires, interviews, etc.) you are using to
collect your data (requirements, test results)? NB: you will explain exactly how you
deployed this tool(s) under section 3.8.2.

3.5 Ethical Consideration
Where sensitive data is required, appropriate ethical consideration must be
employed. You must seek prior permission from your supervisor or appropriate
body mandated by the university. What did you do to protect the privacy,
confidentiality and even health of the research subjects, regarding the information
they provide, the testing they do, etc. The ethical clearance approval so received,
must be added to the appendices section of the report.
3.6 Description of Proposed System
Provide a brief but detailed description of the proposed system.
3.7 System Development/Building
3.7.1 Tools
Tell us about the tools you intend to use/used to develop your system and why the
chosen tools. For example, the programming language, database management
system, network simulation software, web development framework or library etc.
3.7.2 Development Process
Describe to us the particular system development process you intend to use to
develop your system and why. For a chosen development process, tell us exactly
what you would do/did at each phase. Read the notes under Section 3.8** as a guide.

3.8** The System Development Life Cycle(SDLC)

Describe what you have done under each phase of the SDLC: Planning, Analysis,
Design and Implementation. Computer network projects should make reference to
these key network development life cycles;
Analysis, Design, Simulation/Prototyping, Implementation, and Management
(ADSIM) or Prepare, Plan, Design, Implement, Operate, and Optimize (PPDIOO).

3.8.1 The Planning Phase

Describe how your team planned for the project with reference to project
initiation and project management.

GUILDELINES FOR UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH PROJECTS IN THE ITE DEPARTMENT Page 8

3.8.2 Analysis Phase
Describe how requirements were gathered, and analyzed for the project. State
the requirements elicitation techniques (Interviews, observation, JAD,
Questionnaires, Document Analysis, existing system review) used, and
precisely how your team used them to gather the requirements for your
project. Produce the specification document for the project. For computer
networks projects, how site survey, and test drives were conducted should be
carefully elaborated.
3.8.3 Design Phase
The project team by now should describe how the team designed/ will design
the proposed system with respective relevant diagrams.
a. High Level System Architecture (HLSA) diagram
b. System Flowchart
c. Data Flow Diagram
d. Use case diagram
e. E-R diagram and Database Schema
f. Class Diagram
g. Site map and Wireframe
h. Activity diagram and Sequence diagram.
i. Network diagrams

3.8.4 Implementation Phase

Briefly explain how the team will develop the system. List the tools that would
be used to build and implement the system. Describe the tools and
technologies used for the system implementation based on the design phase,
and briefly explain why each tool or technology was chosen.

3.9 Chapter Summary

Summarize the chapter here.

Chapter 4 System Demonstration and Evaluation
4.1 Chapter Introduction
Give a brief introduction to the chapter by indicating what the chapter entails.

4.2 System Demonstration

4.2.1 Experimental/Simulation Setup
This section describes the simulation tools and the platform in which these tools are
employed and the reasons for choosing them. Describe minimum software and
hardware requirements of the system. Give details on the configuration of the
simulation environment (tools, platforms, etc). In case of network simulations, the
topology of the network must be described with appropriate diagrams.

4.2.2 Experimentation/Simulation
Narrate how you carried out the actual experiment from beginning to end.

4.3 System Evaluation

Briefly explain system testing
Describe how your team conducted unit testing, system testing, integration testing,
acceptance testing (alpha and beta tests). Explain the testing methodology (black box,
white box or gray box) the team adopted and why the chosen one.
Capture screenshots of key system operations, and describe them briefly. During the
capture the team should show the robustness of the system by using both valid and
invalid data for testing and subsequent capture of the screens. Categorize your
evaluation under the following headings:
4.3.1 Functional
4.3.2 Non-functional
4.4 Chapter Summary
Summarize the chapter here.

Give a brief introduction to the chapter by indicating what the chapter entails.

5.2 Summary
Provide a quick summary of what the entire system or project is about.
5.3 Conclusion
Describe whether the set objectives of the project have been achieved or otherwise.
Has the project team achieved the set objectives, if yes, briefly describe the evidence
of the achievement; by referring to those functionalities of the system. If No indicate
why the team was unable to achieve them.
5.4 Recommendations
State to whom or institution that the team thinks the system should be implemented.
