1.0 SCOPE OF WORK:
This Method Statement refers to the work procedures contained within Micron Project
Quality Plan & Contract Specifications, which explains and covers the supply,
installation, testing & commissioning of Earthing works at PTB & Airside.

5.0 RESPONSIBILITY
5.1 Project Managers:
The Project Manager shall be responsible for arranging necessary manpower,
equipment’s and materials solves the site technical problems and ensuring
work progress shall be completed as per construction schedule.

a. Ensure all required submittals are made and required plant / tools / material
and manpower are available in a timely manner.
b. Ensure execution of all works are carried out according to approvals, contract
specifications, Mock up approvals, approved shop drawings, Project Quality
Plan, Method Statement and that safety measures are implemented.
c. Ensure necessary coordination with GC Management/PMC Representatives
and other Agencies for timely completion of works.
5.3 Site Engineer:
a. Timely provision of complete relevant information, Consultant approved
documents and instructions to site execution / installation team.
b. Proper execution of works as per approved material submittals approved
Method Statements, Approved Construction drawings and adopts all safety
measures as required.
c. The implementation of the procedures mentioned in method statement shall
be ensured by concerned Site Engineer / Site Supervisor.
d. To carryout site work activities with regard to Quality and Safety
requirements, Conducting Tool Box Talks to the site workers and coordinating
with concerned Quality & Safety Engineer.
5.4 Safety Engineer:
a. Ensure implementation of all safety measures and procedures specific to the
nature and type of execution work being carried out at site.
b. To ensure that project personnel / site execution teams are fully aware of their
responsibilities and have full understanding of the related safety rules,
procedures.
c. To advise the involved personnel about the involved risk at work and
necessary health, safety and environment precautions / measures to minimize
it.
d. To keep the site management and Consultant informed about the adopted
safety measures at site and ensuring their adequacy.
e. To ensure continuous inspection/surveillance of site activities, implementation
of HSE policies, advising, training site staff / work men regarding EHS
Implementation.

5.5 Quality Engineer:
a. Preparing the Method Statement, ITP, and check list.
b. Calling the client/PMC for inspections.
c. Ensure approved materials are used in the site.
d. Checking, quality aspects of material, tools and equipment are used at site.
e. Ensure works are performing as per the approved shop drawings.
f. Verify the quality of tools and tackles, their certificates, suitability and
working conditions and keep a record.
g. Completion and verification of installation
6.0 SAFE WORK METHODOLOGY
6.1 Preparation Work:
Before the commencement of installation, the following are required to be carried out:
MIR to be received and get approval from Client.
Earthing conductor will be checked physically for its proper sizes, galvanizing
(In case of galvanized strips)
Issue of materials from stores as per site requirements
Study the Approved GFC/Shop Drawing for locations and routing.
Check that all the allocated earthing installation position is clear, or work fronts
are ready for installation
Earthing layout and routes shall be approved before starting of work.
Earthing routes shall be chosen for easy, straight runs with a minimum of
bends and crossings.
Check work area is clean and safe.
The GI/Cu flats will be straightened and stored properly near field location

Overlapping of the two strips shall be as per width of the earthing strip
Provide one step scaffolding with lockable arrangements & platform, rubber
wheels with locking, handrails all-round the working platform.
The scaffolding should not be shifted with men & material on the working
platform from one location to other location.
The installation works shall including unloading, storing, laying, fixing, and
jointing/termination, testing and commissioning associated with the safety
earthing system of the plant and lightning protection system for auxiliary
buildings. All welding/brazing equipment, necessary tools and testing
equipment
The scope of installation of earth conductors in outdoor areas, buried in
ground shall include excavation in earth(Excavation subject to scope) up to
600mm deep and 450mm wide, laying of conductor at 600mm depth (unless
stated otherwise), Brazing / Welding as required of main grid conductor joints
as well as risers of 150mm length above ground at required locations and
backfilling.
The scope of installation of earth connection leads on steel structures/walls
shall include laying the conductors, welding/cleating at specified intervals,
welding/brazing to the main earth grids risers, coating welded/brazed joints by
bituminous paint.
All earth pits shall be interconnected using buried ground grid conductor as
per approved GFC.
Wherever earthing conductor passes through walls, galvanized iron sleeves
shall be provided for the passage of the earthing conductor. The pipe ends
shall be sealed by suitable water proof compound.
Procedure for marking
Study the Approved Drawing for locations and routing.
Routing to be marked with line Dore to get approval from Client.

6.2 Installation
GI Earth Strip & CU Earth Strip Installation:
Study the Approved Drawings for correct routing and size of the strips.
Straighten the earth strips.
Fix strips on wall / ceiling using approved make Anchor faster/clamps
Make Joints on strips by welding/Brazing or bolt nut system.
Cover connecting points / joints with bituminous paint.
Connect the equipment to the designated earth strips.
Welding/Brazing area shall be minimum 150 % of the cross-section of the
earthing strip
Earthing strip welding/Brazing joints shall be made as follows:
Clan the earth strip jointing surfaces and align the cutting edges and Take the
overlap piece of earth strip (i.e. approx.. 100mm or Twice the width of earth
strips) and keep it at center on jointing surfaces.
Hold the earth strip welding joint area with “C” Clamp to avoid gaps inbetween
after welding performed, as shown below
Perform the earth strip joint welding/Brazing with qualified welders with using
proper safety PPE’s
Remove the Welding/Brazing slag and spatters deposited near earth strip
jointing area, with the help of wire brush
Cover the welding joint/Brazing joint area with anti-corrosive (zinc rich or
bitumen paint) paint to avoid oxidation,

Electrical and mechanically continuity to be maintained throughout all earthing
Joints.
Screw Joints above ground should be overlapped as shown below. Straight
joints require two screws while only one screw is used for T joints.
Tightening Torque
(Up to 30mm thickness) M10=20Nm
(Up to 40mm thickness) M12=40Nm
All underground earthing joints shall be painted by black bitumen compound
and all exposed joint shall be painted with zinc rich paint.
Insert the PVC sleeves for dedicated earthing which is required for without
touching of any other body and equipment earthing (like DG Neutral,
Transformer neutral & UPS Neutral).
6.3 Installation of Earthing Pits
Prepare the earthing electrode as per the drawings.
Excavate the soil minimum 3.0m depth or as per approved drawings
Excavated soil should be kept 1.5 mtr away from the excavated pit
Excavated area should be barricaded physically
Place the earthing electrode in the excavated hole for the earthing pit.
Fill the charcoal and salt or Chemical compound in earth pits in alternate
layers or as per IS guidance.
The area covered by the layers of charcoal and salt shall be of minimum
150mm from all the side of the earth electrode.
Fill the balance area by soil.
Pour some quantity of water through the funnel to make the compound
Homogeneous with the earth.
Ramp the excavated soil and construct the chamber as per drawing.
Test link shall be provided to earth electrode for testing purpose.
Resistance of earth pit and grid shall be measured & maintained as per
Technical Specification & IS 3043

Wherever earthing conductor passes through walls, galvanized iron sleeves
shall be provided for the passage of the earthing conductor. The pipe ends
shall be sealed by suitable water proof compound.
Wherever main earthing conductor crosses cable trenches, they shall be
buried below the trench floor/providing sleeves.
6.4 EARTH STATION.
6.4.1 SPECIAL ELECTRODE – TRIPOLAR/UNIPOLAR.
Special Earth electrode shall be made of Molicular bonded copper rod with
GEM (Ground Enhancing Materials) of back fill compound, the diameter of
15mm (5/8”). The electrode shall as far as practicable be embedded below
permanent moisture level.
The length of the electrode shall not be less than 3 M and it shall have earth
rod clamp for connecting the raiser at the top. The copper bonded steel rods
are brazed together with 25 x 3mm copper flat for the tripolar configuration.
Except where rock is encountered electrode shall be driven to a depth of at
least 3 M.
6.4.2 PIPE ELECTRODE
Pipe electrode shall be made of CI (cast iron) pipe, 13mm thick of internal
diameter of 100mm. The pipe electrode shall as far as practicable be
embedded below permanent moisture level.
The length of the pipe electrode shall not be less than 2.5 M. It shall have
12mm thickness, through holes drilled at 300mm spacing all along its length.
Except where rock is encountered pipes shall be driven to a depth of at least
2.5 M.
The pipe electrode shall be made in one piece. 19mm GI pipe for watering
shall be terminated in a GI wire meshed funnel.
The area covered by the layers of charcoal and salt shall be of minimum
150mm from all the side of the earth electrode.
6.4.3 PLATE ELECTRODE.
Plate electrode shall be made of COPPER (Cu) plate of 3mm thick and 600 x
600 mm size.
The plate shall be buried vertically in ground at a depth of not less than 2.5 M
to the top of the plate the plate being encased in charcoal to a thickness of
300 mm all round. It is preferable to bury the electrode to a depth where
subsoil water is present.
A GI pipe of not less than 19mm dia shall be clamped with bolts vertically to
the plate and terminated in a wire meshed funnel.
The area covered by the layers of charcoal and salt shall be of minimum
150mm from all the side of the earth electrode.

6.5 CONSTRUCTION DETAILS OF EARTH STATION
The funnel over the pipe / plate earth station shall be enclosed in a masonry
chamber of 600 x 600 mm dimensions. The chamber shall be provided with CI
frame and Poly carbonate / non rusting type inspection cover. The earth
station shall also be provided with a suitable permanent identification label/
tag.
FORMATION OF EARTH MAT
The formation of Earth mat consists of constructing a Grid of 50 x 6 mm GI
strips on the periphery and 25 x 6 mm GI strips for the internal members. All
members and overlaps shall be welded. The whole mat shall be located at a
depth of 1.3 M from FFL and the complete mat shall be connected to Earth
stations within the mat.
6.6 Installation of Earthing Conductor and Equipment Earthing
Neutral points of transformer shall be solidly earthed / earthed by two separate
GI / CU strips to two separate earth electrodes.
The HV Switchgear, Main LV panel including Inverter panel, UPS shall be
connected to earthing grid of the System as specified in the Specifications
and approved drawings
The metallic case of all equipments shall be earthed by two separate
connections to earthing system.
The cable tray shall be earthed at minimum two places by GI flats to earthing
system, the distance between earthing points shall not exceed 30 meter.
Earthing conductor’s crossings the road can be installed in pipes.
Wherever earthing conductor crosses or runs at less than 300 mm distance
along metallic structures such as gas, water, steam pipe lines, steel
reinforcement in concrete, it shall be bonded to the same.
Earthing for the equipment viz Data processing installation & lighting Fixtures
shall be done per the approved drawing or IS.
The size of conductors for Body Earthing shall be as per Technical
Specifications.
Proper hardware’s will be used for jointing.

All HT, LT Panels and Transformer body earthing shall be done as per the
drawing.
All Individual Earth pits resistance and grid resistance has to be checked and
the values shall be in line with approved specification/IS 3043.
Earthing of the multi core cable shall be earthed with earthing system at both
the terminated ends.
6.6.1 PRECAUTIONS.
Earthing system shall be mechanically robust and the joints shall be capable of
retaining low resistance even after repeated subjections to fault currents.
Joints shall be tinned (if copper) and brazed / welded, double bolted / rivetted. For
copper only brazing should be considered. All the joints shall be mechanically
and electrically continuous and effective. Joints shall be protected against
corrosion.
6.7 TESTING.
Earth resistance of electrodes.
Impedance of earth continuity conductors
Effectiveness of earthing
All Individual Earth pits resistance and grid resistance has to be checked and the
values shall be in line with approved specification/IS 3043.

7.0 ENVIRONMENTS, HEALTH & SAFETY:
1. ENVIRONMENTS
Debris to be removed properly after chasing walls for conducting /switch &
sockets fixing.
Stop the unloading & shifting activity if the climate is rainy, cyclone, and storm.
Clean the work area from packing cartoons, waste, and other materials etc. after
completion work.
Ensure no waste, cartoon, papers and other materials shall be flying in air.
2. EHS & SAFETY
Take work permit before starting the work with Approved RA
Barricaded area & Give PEP Talk to the workers involved Before starting Work
Experience person with all job specific PPE’s perform job
Perform task as per ear thing RA
Use cut off machine with safe guard
All electrical cable routine should be at list above men height (3.0 meter)
Fire Extinguisher kept handy near work area
Shifting & unloading of conduit -follow manual handling method as per EHS
plan
Working at height follow method as per site EHS plan
Ear thing pipe storage height not more than 2 meter
Welding & grinding work follow method as per Site EHS plan.
