Harry Styles, British singer and actor
A) Harry Styles was born on February 1, 1994, in Redditch, Worcestershire, England. He is a British singer,
songwriter, and actor. Styles first gained fame as one of the original members of the boy band One Direction.
He later achieved great success as a solo artist with multiple chart-topping singles and albums. In addition to
his music career, Styles has also ventured into acting and fashion.

B) Styles grew up in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, England, with his parents, Anne Twist and Desmond Styles, and his
older sister, Gemma. His parents divorced when he was seven, and his mother raised him and his sister. Styles
developed an interest in music during his time at Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School, where he was the lead
singer of the band White Eskimo. In 2010, encouraged by his mother, he auditioned for The X Factor with a
rendition of “Isn’t She Lovely” by Stevie Wonder. Although he did not advance as a solo artist, he was brought back
to join a group with Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson, which later became known as One
Direction.
C) One Direction quickly rose to fame after finishing third on The X Factor. The group’s debut studio album, Up All
Night, was released in 2011, reaching number two on the U.K. Albums Chart and number one on the Billboard 200.
Styles co-wrote three songs on the album. The band’s next four albums—Take Me Home (2012), Midnight
Memories (2013), Four (2014), and Made in the A.M. (2015)—were also very successful, cementing One Direction
as one of the biggest boy bands in the world.
D) In 2016, One Direction decided to take a break, allowing Styles to focus on his solo career. He signed a contract
with Columbia Records and launched his own record label, Erskine Records. His debut solo single, “Sign of the
Times,” was released in 2017 and topped the U.K. Singles Chart. His self-titled debut album followed, showcasing a
blend of classic rock, soft rock, and pop influences from artists like the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, and Fleetwood
Mac. His second album, Fine Line, released in 2019, broke U.S. sales records for a British male singer. The song
“Watermelon Sugar” from this album won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Solo Performance and the BRIT Award
for British Single of the Year. His third album, Harry’s House (2022), also received critical and commercial acclaim,
winning three Grammy Awards.
E) Styles made his acting debut in 2017, playing a British soldier in the World War II film Dunkirk. His performance was
well-received, leading to more acting roles. In 2022, he starred in the psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling,
directed by Olivia Wilde, and the romantic drama My Policeman, where he played a gay policeman in 1950s
Brighton, England.
F) Throughout his career, Styles has been known for his philanthropy. He often donates proceeds from his concerts
and tours to various charities. He uses his platform to promote equal rights, gender equality, and other important
causes. Styles is also famous for his motto, “Treat People with Kindness,” which he turned into a song featured on
his album Fine Line.

TASK 3: READING
Read the text and the questions below. For each question mark the correct answer: A, B, C
or D. (8 points)
Football is a sport played by two teams or individuals, where the main objective is to move a ball toward an
opponent’s goal. The methods of moving the ball can vary from kicking, carrying, or throwing, depending on the
specific version of the game. Different types of football include soccer, American football, rugby, Australian rules
football, and Gaelic football.
The desire to kick a ball is as old as human civilization itself. The earliest known football games date back over
2,000 years in Greece and China, though historians are unsure how these games were played. There are also
claims that some form of football was played throughout the Roman Empire, though these games likely involved
throwing rather than kicking. In North America, indigenous peoples played kicking games, but they preferred
stickball games, which evolved into modern lacrosse.
In medieval Europe, football was a common pastime during the 14th and 15th centuries, particularly around
Shrovetide or Easter. These games were chaotic and often involved entire villages. Men, women, and children
would all participate, kicking or carrying a ball made of leather or an inflated animal bladder across fields,
streams, and streets. The game would end when one team managed to get the ball to the opposing village’s
church. These games were rough and violent, often resulting in injuries.
The violence of medieval football games is well-documented. For example, the French version, known as soule,
was described as a fierce struggle for the ball. Similarly, the British version was likened to the excitement of
battle. This violence led to repeated attempts by authorities to ban the game. English kings such as Edward II
tried to prohibit football, but their efforts were largely unsuccessful. Records from criminal trials show that football
games often resulted in deaths and property damage.
Compiled by Aleksandre Lomadze
Despite these bans, football persisted and even evolved during the Renaissance. In Italy, the game became
known as calcio, played by young aristocrats in urban squares. This version of football was more formal and less
violent. Players wore fine clothing, and the game was played on bounded rectangular fields, with uniformed
guards maintaining order.
Football continued to evolve in the 18th and 19th centuries. In England, public schools played their own versions
of the game, which were almost as violent as their medieval predecessors. Graduates of these schools took their
love of football to universities like Oxford and Cambridge, leading to the creation of new rules that combined
elements from various school games. This eventually led to the formation of the Football Association in 1863,
giving rise to modern soccer. Other variations, like rugby and American football, also developed during this time.
Today, football in its various forms is played and enjoyed by millions around the world. From professional
leagues to casual neighborhood games, the sport continues to be a source of excitement, community, and
competition.
