Objective
• To equip teachers of Languages skills in
diary writing.

What is diary
writing?
A diary is a daily log that records the events that
happen during the day.
• The diary is also called a journal where people can
record their most intimate feelings, thoughts or
experiences, which they consider to be of lasting
significance, for each day.
• A diary is written mainly for the writer’s use
alone. It has a frankness that is unlike writing
done for publication.
• Therefore, diary writing is keeping record of
each day’s activities or thoughts or ideas.
• A diary became popular in the 1400s when
the importance of an individual began to be
stressed.
• In addition to that, the diary was also of
great importance for the recording of social
and political history.
What is a diary entry?
• A diary entry is a short composition, a record of the
writer's personal feelings, thoughts or activities
during the course of a particular day

• This is a section of writing that has been organized

by date in a diary. Think of it as a chapter in a book.
• It can be as short or as long as you want.
• It is important to note that one does not
write about things they have experienced
on a daily basis but you only write about
those events or experiences that are of
significance.
Format for diary entries
• A diary entry has no fixed format or style of
writing. However, a good diary entry does
contain:

1. Date
2. Day

3. Time

4. Salutation
5. Heading

6. Body
7. Author’s first name
Format of Diary Entries
1. Date
This is important as it serves as a reminder of when the
event happened.
The date is written in the left corner of the page in the
diary.
2. Day
This will be used to indicate on which day of the week
that you made the entry, that is, Monday, Tuesday etc.
3. Time
This also serves as a reminder of the time of the day the
entry was made. Usually done in the evening but
could be in the afternoon/ morning as well.
4. Salutation
After the time, you skip a line and
write the salutation. The salutation is
written as ‘Dear Diary’.
5. Heading (Optional)
This is used to know what the diary entry is
about or what was special about that
particular day.
6. Body
This is the actual content that needs to be
written. Here are a few things to consider
when writing the content;
• It must be written using the first person
pronoun (i.e. I, we).
• The tense used could be simple past, present
perfect or the future tense.
• The length of the entry can be 100-150 words.
However, an academic composition is
advisable to be written between 250 and 350
words.
• You have to be more creative and thoughtful
about content but clear and brief.
• The thoughts or ideas have to be expressed in a
logical manner and may be written in form of
paragraphs.
• Provide important details of the place, time,
people or things that were part of the event.
• Write about your feelings in detail and explain
why you feel that way.
7. Name
• In the end
you write
your first
name.
Style and Tone of the Diary Entries

• The style and tone is generally informal and

personal. However, it depends on the subject.
Sometimes the tone can be philosophical and
reflective too. You can freely express your view
points and feelings.anguage

• You may use simple or informal language but avoid

using slang or colloquial language (if for academic
writing).

Dear Diary,

An Encounter with my Old Friend

Today was a day full of surprises. I met my old friend, Melissa after many years. I ran into her at
the LATAZ District conference at Liteta. Liteta was the last place I thought I would meet her.
As we lined up for registration outside the conference hall, I saw a familiar-looking face staring at
me with curiosity. Suddenly, it dawned simultaneously on both of us that each of us was staring
at a long lost ‘high school sweetheart’. Our joy knew no boundaries as we rushed towards each
other and embraced in a warm hug.
A wave of nostalgia swept over us as we recalled our bygone days over a cup of coffee during
tea break. How beautiful were those school days full of fun, laughter and mischief. Time stood
still as we walked down memory lane hand-in-hand. We parted after promising to remain in
touch with each other. I will never forget this surprise meet up for the rest of my life.

Importance of Diary Writing

• Diary writing may be helpful in the following
ways:
1. Helping us learn how to keep record of the
most significant activities of each day.
2. can also be used as a tool for learners’ self
reflection and teachers’ feedback on
academic matters.
3. Can help in dealing with mental health
issues: While talking to a non-responsive
invisible friend called a diary, we can pour
out all our emotions and stress.
Importance of Diary Cont’d
5. Pupils can also be helped to cope with mental
stress by introducing a classroom diary.
4. Diary writing is also the best way of
improving learners writing. It allows the
learners to focus more on the writing without
worrying much about being penalized on
errors.
5. It can improve learners’ thinking process and
help them become more creative and better
writers.
Conclusion
Diary writing is one of the neglected topics
on the syllabus. Although this composition
may not be examined, it is important that
learners, as well as ourselves, learn such
sustainable language macro skills.
