Diary Writing
What is diary
writing?
A diary is a daily log that records the events that
happen during the day.
• The diary is also called a journal where people can
record their most intimate feelings, thoughts or
experiences, which they consider to be of lasting
significance, for each day.
• A diary is written mainly for the writer’s use
alone. It has a frankness that is unlike writing
done for publication.
• Therefore, diary writing is keeping record of
each day’s activities or thoughts or ideas.
• A diary became popular in the 1400s when
the importance of an individual began to be
stressed.
• In addition to that, the diary was also of
great importance for the recording of social
and political history.
What is a diary entry?
• A diary entry is a short composition, a record of the
writer's personal feelings, thoughts or activities
during the course of a particular day

2. Day
3. Time
4. Salutation
5. Heading
6. Body
7. Author’s first name
Format of Diary Entries
1. Date
This is important as it serves as a reminder of when the
event happened.
The date is written in the left corner of the page in the
diary.
2. Day
This will be used to indicate on which day of the week
that you made the entry, that is, Monday, Tuesday etc.
3. Time
This also serves as a reminder of the time of the day the
entry was made. Usually done in the evening but
could be in the afternoon/ morning as well.
4. Salutation
After the time, you skip a line and
write the salutation. The salutation is
written as ‘Dear Diary’.
5. Heading (Optional)
This is used to know what the diary entry is
about or what was special about that
particular day.
6. Body
This is the actual content that needs to be
written. Here are a few things to consider
when writing the content;
• It must be written using the first person
pronoun (i.e. I, we).
• The tense used could be simple past, present
perfect or the future tense.
• The length of the entry can be 100-150 words.
However, an academic composition is
advisable to be written between 250 and 350
words.
• You have to be more creative and thoughtful
about content but clear and brief.
• The thoughts or ideas have to be expressed in a
logical manner and may be written in form of
paragraphs.
• Provide important details of the place, time,
people or things that were part of the event.
• Write about your feelings in detail and explain
why you feel that way.
7. Name
• In the end
you write
your first
name.
