CODING AND DECODING.
Coding is a system of signals.
This is a method of transmitting information in the form of codes or
signals without it being known by a third person.
The person who transmits the code or signal, is called the sender and
the person who receives it, is called the receiver.
Transmitted codes or signals are decoded on the other side by the receiver this is known as decoding.
In questions on coding-decoding, a word (basic word) is coded in a
particular way and the candidates are asked to code other word in the
same way. The coding and decoding tests are set up to judge the
a particular word/message and break the code to decipher the
message
Keep in mind:
(1) Observe alphabets or numbers given in the code
keenly.
(2) Find the sequence it follows whether it is ascending
or descending. (it can be square, cube series etc)
(3) Detect the rule in which the alphabets/numbers/words
follow.
(4) Fill the appropriate letter/number/word in the blank given.
Trick to remember:
From Left to Right (forward) EJOTY From Right to Left (backward) BGLQV
E J O T Y B G L Q V
5 10 15 20 25 25 20 15 10 5

Sequence and Series
Number series
In this category of questions, a series of various numbers is given with a
blank. We are supposed to find out a pattern between every number and its
predecessor and find out the answer using the same logic.
Tips:
observe the difference between
o constant difference
o difference is decreasing difference is decreasing or increasing
by a constant number, then it is a series of decreasing difference
or an increasing difference
try dividing the 2nd term with the first, third with the second and so on.
try writing each term as a product of two factors and try to see if there is
any pattern
try to look for square/ cube series.
Most common patterns followed by number series are:
1. Series with a constant difference any 2 consecutive numbers have the
same difference between them.
Eg: : 1, 5, 9, 13, ?
2. Series with an increasing difference the difference between two
consecutive terms keep on increasing as we move forward in a series
Eg: 1,2,4,7,11,16,?
3. Series with a decreasing difference difference between two consecutive
terms keep on decreasing as we move forward in a series
Eg: 16,11,7,4,2, ?

4) Series consisting of Perfect Squares
Example:324, 361, 400, 441,?
Sol: 324 = 182 , 361 = 192, 400 = 202, 441 = 212, 484 = 222
5) Perfect Cube Series
Example:512, 729, 1000,?
Sol:83, 93, 103, 113
6) Geometric Series
Example:4, 36, 324, 2916?
Sol:4 x 9 = 36, 36 x 9 = 324, 324 x 9 = 2916, 2916 x 9 = 26244.
7) Arithmetic Series
Example: 4, 9, 14, 19, 24, 29, 34
Example: 1, 3, 6, 10, 15.....
Sol:3 - 1 = 2, 6 - 3 = 3, 10 - 6 = 4, 15 - 10 = 5....
8) Twin/Alternate Series
Example: 3, 4, 8, 10, 13, 16 ? ?
Sol: As we can see, there are two series formed
Series 1: 3, 8, 13 with a common difference of 5
Series 2: 4, 10, 16 with a common difference of 6
So, next two terms of the series should be 18 & 22 respectively.
