1. INTRODUCTION
This design brief details the equipment that will comprise the 110V DC Central Battery
control & protection system for Pembroke 400kV AIS substation. Information is
presented that has been used to determine the required battery specifications. Battery
duty cycle/capacity calculations have been carried out in accordance with NGTS
3.12.4 and IEEE 485, Recommended Practice for Sizing Lead – Acid Batteries for
Stationary Applications.
The purpose of this design brief is to prove that the central battery is adequately rated
to support the two new Mitsubishi SF6 Circuit breakers which are to be installed on
Bus Section 1&2 as part of the NG asset replacement project.
2. EXISTING ARRANGEMENT
Since this report is based on the capacity of the central battery system, we will
therefore only focus on providing its detailed information for calculations purpose.
The central battery system consists of two battery banks, each housing Enersys
Plante type YCP25 (322AH) with two stacks of 55 cells in series.
There are two 110V DC rings at Pembroke which run around the substation through
DC distribution boards installed in each blockhouse. Ring one is for the Generator
Bays and Ring Two for the National Grid Bays. The purpose of the National Grid DC
ring is to provide a backup for the substation ancillary requirements.
A site visit was conducted to capture the standing load on the main battery which is
used in the case studies performed below.
This case study will consider that the two new circuit breaker motors will be supplied
from the central battery while the individual bay protection (block house relay panel
standing loads, trip and close operation loads) will be supplied by the unit batteries
located within each bay blockhouse.
The Central battery is to support motor loads for two bays when a Bus bar fault occurs.
The standing load on the battery is extrapolated from the site visit.

400kV AIS circuit breakers have been sourced from the manufacturer (Mitsubishi).
The battery system shall accommodate two circuit breakers being closed on one by
one basis. This will include the time for spring charge of the CB mechanism which is
automatic following a close operation. The requirement used in this design brief is for
the battery to cater for one such operation. A total of 2 circuit breakers close operation
have been used for this calculation which is based on the number of breakers required
to be closed following a section fault during a busbar outage i.e. worst case operation
scenario.
For the purpose of the calculations we have taken duration of 0.5 minutes as a
practical estimate to account for timing errors.
3.2 Tripping operation of Circuit Breakers (Only Central BBP Units are
considered)
The battery system must also be able to trip associated with a busbar fault at the end
of the 6 hour period. It assumes a worst case operational scenario during a main and
reserve busbar outage with a fault on the main bus section circuit breakers. The
busbar configuration used requires a total of 2 circuit breakers to be operated.

This case study will consider that Central Battery is equipped with an 110V DC supply
system that will provide First ring to the Generator bays and second ring to the
National Grid Bays.
In a worst case scenario the central battery has been in use for the rated load cycle
and a bus bar fault occurs in the last minute of load cycle and the unlikely case of
loosing all of 8 individual blockhouse batteries, it is assumed that the 110V DC Central
Battery would support the protection requirements for the substation.
Standing load details has been considered for the highest loads as shown in table 3
Power requirements for Protection Equipments.
a) All Main & Auxiliary relays are GE, Areva manufactured respectively.
b) For all the bays Mitsubishi CB (400-SFMT-63F) has been considered.
400kV AIS circuit breakers have been sourced from the manufacturer (Mitsubishi).
The battery system shall accommodate eight circuit breakers being closed on one by
one basis. This will include the time for spring charge of the CB mechanism which is
automatic following a close operation. The requirement used in this design brief is for
the battery to cater for one such operation. A total of 8 circuit breakers close operation
have been used for this calculation which is based on the number of breakers required
to be closed following a section fault during a busbar outage i.e. worst case operation
scenario.
For the purpose of the calculations we have taken duration of 2 minutes as a practical
estimate to account for timing errors.

The battery system must also be able to trip all breakers associated with a busbar fault
at the end of the 6 hour period. It assumes a worst case operational scenario during a
main and reserve busbar outage with a fault on the main and reserve bus section
circuit breakers. The busbar configuration used requires a total of 8 circuit breakers to
be operated.

Conclusion:
Central battery is adequately rated (Case study 1) to support the 2 new Mitsubishi breakers.
In worst case scenario i.e. during busbar fault and the unlikely case of loosing all the
individual blockhouse batteries, it is shown that central battery is able to support 50% of the
load for the whole substation. The worst case scenario is evaluated in case study 2.
