1. INTRODUCTION

This design brief details the equipment that will comprise the 110V DC Central Battery
control & protection system for Pembroke 400kV AIS substation. Information is
presented that has been used to determine the required battery specifications. Battery
duty cycle/capacity calculations have been carried out in accordance with NGTS
3.12.4 and IEEE 485, Recommended Practice for Sizing Lead – Acid Batteries for
Stationary Applications.
The purpose of this design brief is to prove that the central battery is adequately rated
to support the two new Mitsubishi SF6 Circuit breakers which are to be installed on
Bus Section 1&2 as part of the NG asset replacement project.

2. EXISTING ARRANGEMENT

Pembroke is an indoor AIS substation which is supported by a 110V DC central

battery system and bay level unit battery systems located within each blockhouse.

Since this report is based on the capacity of the central battery system, we will
therefore only focus on providing its detailed information for calculations purpose.
The central battery system consists of two battery banks, each housing Enersys
Plante type YCP25 (322AH) with two stacks of 55 cells in series.

There are two 110V DC rings at Pembroke which run around the substation through
DC distribution boards installed in each blockhouse. Ring one is for the Generator
Bays and Ring Two for the National Grid Bays. The purpose of the National Grid DC
ring is to provide a backup for the substation ancillary requirements.

A site visit was conducted to capture the standing load on the main battery which is
used in the case studies performed below.

3. CALCULATION OF 110V CENTRAL BATTERY LOAD (CASE STUDY 1)

This case study will consider that the two new circuit breaker motors will be supplied
from the central battery while the individual bay protection (block house relay panel
standing loads, trip and close operation loads) will be supplied by the unit batteries
located within each bay blockhouse.

The Central battery is to support motor loads for two bays when a Bus bar fault occurs.
The standing load on the battery is extrapolated from the site visit.

Assumptions made for Case study 1:

a) Standing load on Distribution board – 1 is considered as 7 Amps.

b) For 2 bays Mitsubishi CB (400-SFMT-63F) has been considered.

3.1 Closing operation of circuit breakers

400kV AIS circuit breakers have been sourced from the manufacturer (Mitsubishi).

The battery system shall accommodate two circuit breakers being closed on one by
one basis. This will include the time for spring charge of the CB mechanism which is
automatic following a close operation. The requirement used in this design brief is for
the battery to cater for one such operation. A total of 2 circuit breakers close operation
have been used for this calculation which is based on the number of breakers required
to be closed following a section fault during a busbar outage i.e. worst case operation
scenario.

Spring charge duration is considered to be 10 seconds (Actual 8.5 seconds @ 14A)

Motor Current Peak (Value from Supplier) = 48 A for 1 sec.

Therefore each breaker close operation takes approx. 10.1 seconds.

A current of 14A is required for each circuit breaker close operation.

2 bay x 10.1 = 20.2 seconds or 0.34 minutes

For the purpose of the calculations we have taken duration of 0.5 minutes as a
practical estimate to account for timing errors.

Therefore the total closing operation required is,

I = 14A for duration of 0.5 minutes.

3.2 Tripping operation of Circuit Breakers (Only Central BBP Units are
considered)

The battery system must also be able to trip associated with a busbar fault at the end
of the 6 hour period. It assumes a worst case operational scenario during a main and
reserve busbar outage with a fault on the main bus section circuit breakers. The
busbar configuration used requires a total of 2 circuit breakers to be operated.

Bus Bar Protection Central Unit Load = 150 Watts

Total Busbar Protection Load on Central Battery = 150 Watts

From table 2 standing load is considered as 7 Amps.

I = 7 Amps for a duration of 6 hours

Trip Coil Calculation:

Resistance of Trip coil = Resistance of Device 52T1 X 3 (in Series)

R = 5 X 3 = 15 Ohms

Trip Coil Load = P= V x V / R = (110 X 110) / 15=807 Watts (information by supplier)

No. of Trip Coil per Circuit Breaker = 2

Page 4 of 18
Electricity Alliance - South West Rev:-P0

Maximum Number of Breakers Operated = 2

Circuit Breaker Trip Load = (807 x 2 x 2) = 3228 Watts

Total tripping load = 3228+150 =3378 watts

Converting to Amperes (I = P / V)

V = 110

I = 3378/110

I = 31 A, for a duration of 1 second.

I1 (standing) load = 7 A for 6hrs

I2 (Closing) load = (7+14) = 21 A for 0.5 minutes

I3 (Tripping) load = (7+31) = 38 A for 1second

The duty cycle comprised above all components is shown in APPENDIX 1.

4. CALCULATION OF 110V CENTRAL BATTERY LOAD (CASE STUDY 2)

This case study will consider that Central Battery is equipped with an 110V DC supply
system that will provide First ring to the Generator bays and second ring to the
National Grid Bays.

In a worst case scenario the central battery has been in use for the rated load cycle
and a bus bar fault occurs in the last minute of load cycle and the unlikely case of
loosing all of 8 individual blockhouse batteries, it is assumed that the 110V DC Central
Battery would support the protection requirements for the substation.

Standing load details has been considered for the highest loads as shown in table 3
Power requirements for Protection Equipments.

Assumptions made for Case study 2:

a) All Main & Auxiliary relays are GE, Areva manufactured respectively.
b) For all the bays Mitsubishi CB (400-SFMT-63F) has been considered.

4.1 Closing operation of circuit breakers

400kV AIS circuit breakers have been sourced from the manufacturer (Mitsubishi).

The battery system shall accommodate eight circuit breakers being closed on one by
one basis. This will include the time for spring charge of the CB mechanism which is
automatic following a close operation. The requirement used in this design brief is for
the battery to cater for one such operation. A total of 8 circuit breakers close operation
have been used for this calculation which is based on the number of breakers required
to be closed following a section fault during a busbar outage i.e. worst case operation
scenario.

Close Coil operation is considered to be 100ms duration (Actual 80ms @ 10.5A).

Spring charge duration is considered to be 10 seconds (Actual 8.5 seconds @ 14A)

Motor Current Peak (Value from Supplier) = 48A for 1 sec.

Therefore each breaker close operation takes approx. 10.1 seconds.

A current of 14A is required for each circuit breaker close operation.

8 bay x 10.1 = 80.8 seconds or 1.35 minutes

For the purpose of the calculations we have taken duration of 2 minutes as a practical
estimate to account for timing errors.

Therefore the total closing operation required is,

I = 14A for duration of 2 minutes.

Page 9 of 18
Electricity Alliance - South West Rev:-P0

4.2 Tripping operation of Circuit Breakers

The battery system must also be able to trip all breakers associated with a busbar fault
at the end of the 6 hour period. It assumes a worst case operational scenario during a
main and reserve busbar outage with a fault on the main and reserve bus section
circuit breakers. The busbar configuration used requires a total of 8 circuit breakers to
be operated.

Bus Bar Protection Central Unit Load = 150 Watts

Bus Bar Protection field unit load per feeder = 16 Watts

No of feeders = 4

Bus Bar Protection field unit load per Bus section/Bus Coupler bays = 32 Watts

No of Bus sections & Bus couplers = 4

Total Busbar Protection Load on Central Battery = (150+ (16*4)+(32*4)) Watts

=342 Watts

From table 4 Standing load details has been considered as

I= 7.32 A (eight highest load bays) + Miscellaneous (2A)

Hence, I = 10 Amps for a duration of 6 hours

Trip Coil Calculation:

Resistance of Trip coil = Resistance of Device 52T1 X 3 (in Series)

R = 5 X 3 = 15 Ohms

Trip Coil Load = P= V x V / R = (110 X 110) / 15=807 Watts (information by supplier)

No. of Trip Coil per Circuit Breaker = 2

Maximum Number of Breakers Operated = 8

Circuit Breaker Trip Load = (807 x 2 x 8) = 12,912 Watts

Total tripping load = 12,912+342 =13,254 watts

Converting to Amperes (I = P / V)

V = 110

I = 13,254 /110

I = 120 A, for a duration of 1 second.

I1 (standing) load = 10 A for 6 hrs

Page 10 of 18
Electricity Alliance - South West Rev:-P0

I2 (Closing) load = (10 + 14) = 24 A for 3 minutes

I3 (Tripping) load = (10 + 120) = 130 A for 1second

The duty cycle comprised above all components is shown in APPENDIX 3.

DC LOAD TO BE CONSIDERED FOR BATTERY SIZING Table - 4

Battery size required : 2 X 100%

A Continuous Load Detail

Continuous current control + Protection 1 (eight bays) : 8A
Miscellaneous 2A
Total, Ia : 10 A
Say, Ia 10 A FOR 6 Hrs.

B Momentary Load Detail

B1 Breaker closing load

Close coil current @110V : 10 A FOR 100 mSec

Breaker Closing Time 100 mSec
Spring Charge motor current : 14 A
Motor Current Peak (Value from Supplier) 48 A 1 Sec
Time duration of operation for spring charge motor : 10 s
Hence, close coil operation current : 14 A FOR 10.1 S

No. of breakers : 8
Assuming closing operation one by one,
the closing coil current to be considered : 14 A FOR 80.8 S
1.35 min

Load current to be considered, Ib1 : 14 A FOR 2 min

B2 Breaker Tripping Load

Operation of 400KV busbar protection at the end of 6 hour period is considered.
Bus configuration assumed :All feeders / transformers on one bus with the bus section closed
BB protection central unit load : 150 W
BB protection field unit load per feeder : 16 W
No. of feeder bays : 4
BB protection field unit load per bus section/Bus coupler: bay 32 W
No. of Bus sections/Bus Coupler bays 4
Total BB protection load : 342
: 342 W

Trip coil resistance : 15 Ohm 3x5 Ohm in series

Trip coil wattage : 807 W
No. of tripcoils per breaker : 2
Maximum no. of breakers likely to be tripped for one
busbar fault : 8
Total trip coil wattage : 8 x 2 x 807
: 12,912 W

Total Momentary Load : 342 + 12912

: 13,254 W

Momentary Load current @ 110V, Ib2 : 120 A FOR 1 sec

Thus
I1 : Ia
: 10 A for 6 hr
I2 : Ia + Ib1
: 24 A for 2 min

I3 : Ia + Ib2
: 130 A for 1 sec

APPENDIX 3: DISCHARGE CURVE AND LOAD CALCULATIONS

CASE STUDY - 2
110V DC CENTRAL BATTERY SYSTEM

Amps Duty Cycle

I3=130A

I2=24A

I1=10A

360 Time(min)

Conclusion:

Central battery is adequately rated (Case study 1) to support the 2 new Mitsubishi breakers.

In worst case scenario i.e. during busbar fault and the unlikely case of loosing all the
individual blockhouse batteries, it is shown that central battery is able to support 50% of the
load for the whole substation.The worst case scenario is evaluated in case study 2.
