PERSONAL SAFETY WHILE WORKING WITH PC’S

The following statements are some safety precautions to take before working with any
computer devices:
• Before doing anything, listen to your teacher’s instruction to prevent accidents or any
unwanted events that may occur in your workplace
• Do not work on a computer when you are wet because you might get electrocuted.
• Do not remove internal devices of the computer when it is turned on.
• Avoid playing or running while inside the room.
• Always wear personal protective equipment (PPE) like coverall, shoes with rubber
sole, anti- static wrist strap, etc.
• Ask for assistance from your teacher when it comes to dealing with computer
devices.
• Applying safety measure when handling tools and equipment are necessary to avoid
certain damages.

BASIC COMPUTER OPERATIONS

Input
It is the information (data) that goes into the computer for processing. Input can take
a variety of forms from commands you enter by keyboard to data from another computer or
device.
Process
Inside the computer system unit are the processor, random access memory (RAM) or often
called as memory, and the hard disk. The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is the main “brain”
or “heart” of a computer system. It performs all the instructions and calculations that are
needed and manages the flow of information through a computer.
Output
It is any information (data) that comes out of a computer. It is the displayed results
after the computer has processed the input data that has been entered.

6
A. Input Devices
Any hardware component that allows users to enter data and instructions into a
computer. It accepts data and instructions from the user or from another computer system.

➢ Keyboard is a primary input device used with a computer. It

contains keys such as letters, numbers and symbols that users
press to enter data and instructions.

➢ Mouse is a device that controls the movement of the cursor or

pointer on a display screen.

➢ Touch screen is a computer screen that can be used by

touching it with a finger or a stylus pen to interact with a
computer.

➢ Computer microphone is a device that accepts audio input

from users.

➢ Web Camera is used to capture video and still images

➢ Computer Scanner is a device that optically scans images,

printed text, handwriting, or an object and converts it to a digital image.

➢ Graphics Tablet is a computer input device that enables a user to hand-

draw images, animations, and graphics, with a special pen-like stylus, similar
to the way a person draws images with a pencil and paper.

B. Storage Devices
Storage devices are devices that can store data or information. There are
various types of storage devices. Different devices are suitable for different tasks.
1. Primary Storage Device
• RAM (Random Access Memory) is a type of volatile memory, meaning the data
disappears if the power is switched off. It is a short-term working memory that only
works when the computer is turned on.
• ROM (Read Only Memory) is a type of non- volatile memory. Data in ROM is
permanently written and is not erased when you power off your computer.

2. Secondary Storage Devices

• Hard disk - also known as hard drive, is a magnetic storage
device that is installed inside the computer. The hard drive is
used as permanent storage for data. More files and software can
be stored. Storage capacity is measured by Gigabytes (GB) or
Terabytes (TB).

7
• CD (Compact Disc)/ DVD (Digital Versatile Disc) - is good storage for
photos, video or files. The computer must have CD-ROM or DVD ROM to
access the information. You need a DVD Writer device to store your files
in blank CD or DVD.
• Flash drive – is a portable drive, which means it is easy for the user to copy
and transfer files from one computer to another computer. It has higher
storage compares to CD or DVD. Storage capacity is measured by
Gigabytes (GB).

C. Output Devices
Any computer hardware component that shows results after the computer processes
the input data entered.
1. Computer Display Monitor - an output device that displays
information in visual form, using text, and graphics and considered as
a primary output device. The part of the monitor showing the
information is called the terminal for screen or video display. The
three types of monitor are the following: CRT (Cathode Ray Tube)
Monitor, LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) Monitor, and LED (Light
Emitting Diode) Monitor
2. LCD Projectors – utilize two sheets of polarizing material with a
liquid crystal solution between them. The electrical current that
passes through the liquid aligns the crystals so that light cannot pass
through them.
3 Smart board – a type of display board with a touch-sensitive,
transparent panel that covers the board, like a touch screen.
4 Speakers - used to play sound. These can be built into the system
unit or attached to cables. Speakers let you hear music from your
machine and hear sound effects

5 Printer - a tool which prints text or images on paper.

8
PRODUCE OUTPUT/DATA USING COMPUTER SYSTEM
As we have known, computer output commonly takes the form of screen or printer
output. Other forms of output include voice, microfilm, and various forms of graphics output.
The computer output device converts information into a human-readable form.

Printing Data Procedures

You can print by using any of the following methods:
1. Using of shortcut keys, Ctrl + P.
2. Open the document or file you want to print. From the Quick access toolbar, select the
print icon.
3. Open the document or file you want to print. In the top portion of the program window

ACCESSING INFORMATION USING COMPUTER

To create and develop a better output while working with a computer, we should be
familiar accessing information in our computer and using basic computer programs.
Understanding the desktop screen can help the user navigate/ access specific files or
programs needed to perform a task. Let us identify the parts of a desktop screen.

• Recycle Bin - Temporary storage of deleted files.

Ways to Access Information in Computer Stored in a Computer

In accessing information stored in our computer, we can do it either manually locating
the files or searching it using the search bar.

Manually locate the file. In accessing information manually, we can use shortcut
key Window + E to launch windows explorer. ‘Window + E’ means to press and hold down
first Window key (do not release), followed by letter E key then release both keys. Point your
mouse and double click to the drive (drive C, D, E for example) where you store your file.
Once you found your file, double click the mouse to open it.
