Rigid Transformations
Objective
In this lesson, you will represent transformations on the coordinate plane and specify a
sequence to carry a given figure onto another.

Single Transformations
In a geometric transformation, the preimage is transformed one or more times to

produce an image that has the same corresponding side lengths and angle measures.

A rigid transformation produces a congruent figure, where the lengths

of the sides and measures of the angles are preserved , or stay the same.

Question
If quadrilateral ABCD is reflected across the line y = x, what are the
vertex coordinates of quadrilateral A’B’C’D’?

To reflect an image across the line y = x, the order

of the coordinates in each preimage vertex.

A: (0,1) C: (2,4)
A’: ( 1 ,0 ) C’: ( 4 ,2 )
B: (4,1) D: (2,2) 1 ,4
B’: ( ) D’: ( 2 ,2 )

ROTATIONS ON THE COORDINATE PLANE

90° clockwise or 270° counterclockwise: 180° clockwise or counterclockwise:

• order of the coordinates switches • order of the coordinates stays the same

• the new y -coordinates change sign • both coordinates change sign

P(x,y) P’( -y ,x ) P(x,y) P’( -x , -y )

270° clockwise or 90° counterclockwise: 360° clockwise or counterclockwise:

• order of the coordinates switches • a full rotation produces an image that is

• the new x -coordinates change sign exactly the same as the preimage, so the

coordinates stays the same

P(x,y) P’( y , -x )
P(x,y) P’( x ,y )

Question
Which transformations can produce quadrilateral A′B′C′D′
from quadrilateral ABCD?

☐ a reflection across the line y = x

☐ a reflection across the line y = -x
☐ a 90° clockwise rotation about the origin
☐ a 180° counterclockwise rotation about the origin
☐ a 270° counterclockwise rotation about the origin
☐ a 180° clockwise rotation about the origin

The preimage coordinates are: The image coordinates are:

A: ( 0 ,1 ) C: ( 2 ,2 ) A’: ( 0 , -1 ) C’: ( -2 , -2 )

B: ( 2 ,1 ) D: ( 1 ,3 ) B’: ( -2 , -1 ) D’: ( -1 , -3 )

For each pair of coordinates, the order of the coordinates was the same, but both coordinates

changed sign: (x’,y’) = ( -x , -y ). So quadrilateral ABCD has been rotated 180 ° clockwise

or counterclockwise about the origin.

the y -coordinate changes by a. the x -coordinate changes by b.

P(x,y) P′( x , y+a ) P(x,y) P′( x+b , y )

When a is positive, the preimage translates When b is positive, the preimage translates
up . When a is negative, the preimage

When a preimage translates up or down and right

P(x,y) P′( x+b , y+a )

A translation of 6 units down and 7 units right is

represented by (x′,y′) = ( x+7 , y-6 ).

A translation of 3 units up and 2 units left is

represented by (x′,y′) = ( x-2 , y+3 ).

Consider figures 1 and 2 shown on the coordinate plane.
Figure 1 has been transformed to produce figure 2.

Figure 2 is translation to figure 1 because figure 2 is a

congruent of figure 1. This transformation can

be described as (x′,y′) = ( x+7 , y-1 ).

Sequences of Transformations
We can perform multiple rigid transformations to produce a congruent image. Since

the order in which the transformations are performed matters , we call multiple

transformations a sequence of transformations.

SEQUENCE ORDER
The order of the transformations in a sequence affects what the image looks like.

1. Translate 2 units up .
2. Rotate 90° counterclockwise
about the origin.

1. Rotate 90 ° counterclockwise
about the origin.
2. Translate 2 units up.

Even though both sequences include the exact same transformations, their images result in
different location .

Question
Triangle DEF is reflected across the line and then translated 3 units right. Which figure is the
resulting image? Select the correct figure on the graph.

Triangle DEF has vertices at

D( 1 , 7 ), E( 5 ,7 ), and F( 3 ,2 ). 3

F′( -2 , -3 )

Next translate triangle D′E′F′ 3 units right

D′′( -4 , -1 )
by adding 3 to each x-coordinate:
E′′( -4 , -5 )
(x′′,y′′) = ( x+3 ,y ).
F′′( 1 , -3 )

VERIFYING CONGRUENT FIGURES

We can verify that two figures on or off the coordinate plane are congruent by finding a

sequence of transformations that

maps one figure onto the other.

 Translations preserve orientation .

Orientation is the way a figure is

positioned or facing .

 Rotations turns a figure, and reflections

flip a figure.

affect the
Rotations and reflections

preserve orientation.

 Sometimes, a single transformation can produce the same image as a sequence of

transformations: a rotation of 180 ° about the origin is the same as a
refkection across both the x- and the y-axis.

Is Trapezoid A congruent to Trapezoid B?

1. Rotate A CCW about point P.

2. Reflect the image of A over the horizontal line.

This sequence of transformations maps trapezoid A onto

trapezoid B. Therefore, the trapezoids are congruent .
