students. Any group bigger than 5 will lose marks.

Questions

1. A company makes two products X and Y using two machines (A and B).
Each unit of X that is produced requires 50 minutes processing time on
machine A and 30 minutes processing time on machine B. Each unit of Y
that is produced requires 24 minutes processing time on machine A and
33 minutes processing time on machine B. At the start of the current week
there are 30 units of X and 90 units of Y in stock. Available processing
time on machine A is forecast to be 40 hours and on machine B is forecast
to be 35 hours. The demand for X in the current week is forecast to be 75
units and for Y is forecast to be 95 units. Company policy is to maximise
the combined sum of the units of X and the units of Y in stock at the end
of the week.

a Formulate the problem of deciding how much of each product to make in


the current week as a linear program.
b Solve this linear program graphically.
2. Michael is taking an exam in order to become a volunteer firefighter. The
exam has 10 essay questions and 50 multiple choice questions. He has 90
minutes to take the exam. The essay questions are worth 20 points each
and the short-answer questions are worth 5 points each. An essay question
takes 10 minutes to answer and a short-answer question takes 2 minutes.
Michael must do at least 3 essay questions and at least 10 short-answer
questions. Michael knows the material well enough to get full points on
all questions he attempts and wants to maximize the number of points
he will get. How many questions should Michael answer to maximise his
marks?

3. A certain motorcycle manufacturer produces two basic models, the Super
X and the Super Y. These motorcycles are sold to dealers at a profit of
R20 000 per Super X and R10 000 per Super Y. A Super X requires 150
hours for assembly, 50 hours for painting and finishing and 10 hours for
checking and testing. The Super Y requires 60 hours for assembly, 40
hours for painting and finishing and 20 hours for checking and testing.
The total number of hours available per month is: 30 000 in the assembly
department, 13 000 in the painting and finishing department and 5 000
in the checking and testing department. What is the maximum profit
possible.
4. Dino is to have a rectangular swimming pool at his villa. He wants its
width to be at least 2 meters and its length to be at least 5 meters. He
wants its length to be at least twice its width. He wants its length to be
no more than three times its width. Each metre of the width of the pool
costs R1000 and each metre of the length of the pool costs R500. He has
R9000 available.
Let the width of the pool be x meters and the length of the pool be y
meters.
a Show that one of the constraints leads to the inequality 2x + y ≤ 18.
b Find the maximum width of the pool. state the corresponding length of
the pool.

5. The Jolly Company sells two types of party packs: excellent and luxury.
Each excellent pack has five balloons and each luxury pack has ten bal-
loons. Each excellent pack has 32 sweets and each luxury pack has 8
sweets. The company has 1500 balloons and 4000 sweets available. The
company sells at least 50 of each type of pack and at least 140 packs in
total. The company sells x excellent packs and y luxury packs. The com-
pany sells each excellent pack for 80c and each luxury pack for R1.20. The
company needs to find its minimum and maximum total income.
a Find the company’s maximum income and the corresponding number of
packs that need to be sold.

b Find the company’s minimum income and the corresponding number of


packs that need to be sold.
6. A factory makes two types of locks, standard and large, on a particular
day. On that day: the maximum number of standard locks that the factory
can make is 100; the maximum number of large locks that the factory can
make is 80; the factory must make at least 60 locks in total; the factory
must make more large locks than standard locks.
Each standard lock requires 2 screws and each large lock requires 8 screws,
and on that day the factory must use at least 320 screws.

On that day, the factory makes x standard locks and y large locks.
Each standard lock costs R1.50 to make and each large lock costs R3 to
make. If the manager of the factory wishes to minimize the cost of making
the locks how many locks must he make?
