Abstract
This project delves into the investigation of the age difference
at death between individuals categorized as right-handers and
left-handers. By utilizing data analysis techniques and Bayesian
statistics, the project aims to discern whether the commonly
held belief of left-handers experiencing shorter lifespans is
substantiated by empirical evidence. The analysis is centered
around datasets encompassing death distribution information
and left-handedness rates, drawn from a 1999 United States
dataset and the 1986 National Geographic survey respectively.

The project proceeds through systematic phases. It entails data

loading and preprocessing using the pandas library to ensure
the datasets are primed for analysis. Visualizations are created
using matplotlib to visualize rates of left-handedness against
age and birth year. Applying Bayesian reasoning, conditional
probabilities are calculated to ascertain the probability of being
of a certain age at death based on handedness.

The results and findings of this analysis are essential in

understanding the relationship between handedness and age at
death, disentangling the true impact of left-handedness on
longevity. Ultimately, this project demonstrates the potency of
data analysis techniques and their ability to uncover nuanced
insights, challenging existing perceptions and providing a
nuanced understanding of the factors influencing age
differences in mortality among right-handers and left-handers.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

This project aims to analyze the age difference of death
between right-handers and left-handers by employing data
analysis techniques. The project leverages pandas, Bayesian
statistics, and Python programming to explore the relationship
between handedness and age at death. The analysis is based on
data from a National Geographic survey conducted in 1986,
which includes information on age, sex, and hand preference.

The hypothesis that left-handers face a higher mortality rate

has persisted for years, potentially rooted in societal biases or
biological factors. However, this project seeks to test the
veracity of this belief through rigorous data analysis. By
examining patterns in age at death among right-handers and
left-handers, the project aims to offer insights into the
intersection of handedness and longevity.
Objective

The core objective of this project is to determine whether left-

handers experience a statistically significant difference in their
age at death compared to right-handers. Through
comprehensive data analysis, the project seeks to provide a
nuanced understanding of the impact of handedness on
lifespan.
I. Methodology

The project employs a data-driven approach using Python

programming language and relevant libraries. The data
preprocessing phase involves loading and cleaning the death
distribution and left-handedness rate datasets using pandas.
Visualizations are created using matplotlib to illustrate trends in
left-handedness rates across different age groups.

Utilizing Bayesian statistics, conditional probabilities are

calculated to estimate the likelihood of being a certain age at
death based on handedness. The analysis encompasses
extrapolation of left-handedness rates for earlier and later years
due to data limitations, which is crucial in making accurate
predictions.

Language and Platform

The project is implemented in Python, a versatile programming

language for data analysis. The Jupyter Notebook platform is
utilized for its interactive and collaborative features, enabling
clear code documentation and visualization.
II. Implementation

data, creating visualizations, and applying Bayesian

reasoning to calculate conditional probabilities. The
implementation is structured using Python functions and
libraries such as pandas, matplotlib, and numpy .
III. Screenshot and Observation

The results of the analysis reveal the relationship

between handedness and age at death. The project
challenges the perception of left-handers having
shorter lifespans by providing evidence-based
insights. Visualizations aid in comprehending the
changing rates of left-handedness across different
age groups.
 The graph shows that the percentage of left-handed
people decreases with age for both males and females.
The percentage of left-handed people is highest in the
youngest age range (10-20 years old), and it decreases
gradually with each age range. The percentage of left-
handed people is lowest in the oldest age range (70-80
years old).

The graph also shows that the percentage of left-handed

females is slightly higher than the percentage of left-handed
males. This is a consistent finding in many studies, and the
reason for it is not fully understood.

Overall, the graph provides some interesting insights into the

rates of left-handedness as a function of age and sex. It is
important to note, however, that this data is from a survey that
was conducted in 1986. It is possible that the rates of left-
handedness have changed since then
 The line graph shows the average percentage of left-handed people born in a
certain year. The average percentage of left-handed people has been
increasing over time, from around 10% in 1910 to around 14% in 1980.

 The graph also shows that there is a lot of variation in the percentage of left-
handed people born in different years. For example, the percentage of left-
handed people born in 1940 is much higher than the percentage of left-
handed people born in 1950. The reasons for this variation are not fully
understood, but it is possible that they are due to environmental factors such
as exposure to certain chemicals or hormones during pregnancy.

The blue dots represent the mean percentage of left-handed people born in a
certain year. The red line is a trend line that shows the general trend of the
data.

The trend line shows that the mean percentage of left-handedness has been
increasing over time, from around 10% in 1910 to around 14% in 1980. However,
there is a lot of variation in the data, and there are some years where the percentage
of left-handedness decreases.

The image also shows that there is a cluster of points in the upper left corner of the
graph. This cluster of points corresponds to the years 1940-1950, which were years
with a higher than average percentage of left-handed people. The reasons for this
increase in left-handedness are not fully understood, but it is possible that they are
due to environmental factors such as exposure to certain chemicals or hormones
during pregnancy.
IV. CONCLUSION

Through meticulous data analysis and Bayesian

reasoning, this project elucidates the complex
relationship between handedness and age at
death. By shedding light on the misconception of
left-handers' shorter lifespans, the project
underscores the power of data-driven
investigations in unraveling societal assumptions
and contributing to a more informed
understanding of human longevity.

In conclusion, this project serves as an exemplar of

how data analysis can be harnessed to debunk
myths and provide meaningful insights into human
experiences.
