BUILDING THE PERFECT PARAGRAPH

TO BEEF UP YOUR WRITING

*When writing a paragraph, use the following recipe for making a

hamburger to help you!

HAMBURGER PARAGRAPH:

TOP BUN = Introduction/Introductory Sentence (Every

hamburger needs a top bun, every paragraph needs an introduction.

FIXINGS (Lettuce, tomato, onions, cheese, ketchup etc.) =

details/detail sentences. A hamburger is boring without fixings
and so is a paragraph!
-All fixings need to go with the burger meaning that all the details
need to go with the paragraph topic. STAY ON TOPIC!
-Fixings make a burger interesting/details make a paragraph unique

BURGER= The “Meat” of the paragraph (main idea/facts) What

is your writing going to be about?

BOTTOM BUN= Conclusion/Concluding Sentence (The bottom

bun finishes off the burger. A conclusion finishes off your writing.

PURPOSE OF THE TOP BUN AND BOTTOM BUN= To hold

all the ingredients together of your burger or in this case your
paragraph!

BALANCE OUT THE MEAL (PARAGRAPH)

With a few “sides”
2
Sometimes, when ordering a hamburger, you need a few “sides” to
make your meal complete.

Use these “sides” to make your writing well balanced, and

interesting!

SIDE ORDER #1: Milkshake (DESCRIPTIVE WORDS) Shake

up your writing and add “spice” and “flavor” by painting pictures
of characters and details.

SIDE ORDER #2: French Fries (TIME ORDER WORDS) Use

them the to “sizzle” into a timeline, explaining when an event takes
(or took) place.

SIDE ORDER #3: Onion Rings (TRANSITION WORDS) Use

these words to help “flip over” one paragraph to the next.

SIDE ORDER #4: Ice cream cone (FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE)

“Melt” these words into your sentences to make sure they are well
done. Expand and twist substance into your writing.

Your burgers or paragraphs can be cooked rare,

medium, or well done. How much time are you willing
to put into the process of creating a terrific burger
(paragraph)?
