L.O: To understand the life cycle of animals.

S.C: I understand what a life cycle is.

I can draw the stages of an animals life.
I can label my diagram and explain what it shows.

Life Cycle: Shows the different stages of life for a living

thing.

Offspring: An animals young (baby).

Germinate: When a seed begins to grow and put out

shoots.

Frogspawn: The eggs of a frog, which are surrounded by

transparent jelly.

Tadpole: He tailed amphibian (frog, toad, newt, or

salamander), breathing through gills and lacking legs until
the later stages of its development.

Froglet: A tiny frog that has recently developed from a

tadpole.
What is a life cycle?
All living things have life cycles.

Animals produce offspring and plants

produce seeds which germinate into
new plants.

Baby
Child A life cycle simply shows the different
stages of life for a living thing. In science it
is usually shown in a circular diagram that
shows each stage in words and pictures.
Adolescen

t
seeds / offspring are created as part of the

Do All Animals Have the Same Life
Cycle?
Not all animals go through the same changes throughout their
life cycle, but most animals go through what’s called the
simple life cycle. The simple life cycle has just three steps!

•They are born (birthed or hatched).

•They are young.

•They are adults

A chicken goes through

a simple life cycle:

Egg Chick Chicken

A frogs life cycle

• First, a frog lays her eggs in a

pond. These eggs are called
frogspawn. Their eggs are
covered in a special jelly to keep
them safe and warm.

• Next, the tadpoles hatch out of the

frogspawn. This happens after about 6-21
days.
• The tadpoles are usually dark brown, black
or grey and have long wriggly tails and a
large head.
• They have gills to help them breathe
underwater. They eat algae and water plants
and begin to grow larger.
• Tadpoles have a tail for swimming with. It
usually takes them 6-9 weeks to fully
develop as a tadpole, however some types of
Around week 12, the tadpole sprouts
legs.

It then becomes a froglet. It starts to

grow arms, have a longer body, and
have a bigger head. It breathes under
the water and still has a tail.

Finally it becomes a frog.

The adult frog breathes air
and has no tail. This growth
cycle, from egg to frog takes
between 12 to 16 weeks.

Your Activity!
You will be drawing the life cycle of a frog. Below is an example of
the life cycle of a butterfly.

Egg - First a butterfly lays an eggs onto a leaf. These can be round, oval or cylindrical.

Caterpillar – Next the caterpillar hatches and starts eating the plant it was born on, this helps it to grow. It
sheds its skin several times.

Chrysalis – Then the caterpillar undergoes a process called metamorphosis inside its chrysalis, where it
is rapidly changing inside.

Butterfly – Finally it becomes a fully formed butterfly, it dries its wings and then flies off to seek out a mate.
Skills Activity
Draw the diagram below on a piece of paper to show the life cycle
of a frog. Then use the pictures to help you draw the stages into the
boxes. Label each stage using the key vocabulary below.

Key words:

frog frog spawn tadpole

froglet
Core and Extension
Activity
Draw the life cycle of a frog to show the 5 stages of it’s life. Label
each stage. When you have finished drawing your diagram, write a
few sentences to explain each stage using key vocabulary.
