You and your family have just come back from a holiday staying in a rented
apartment overlooking the sea. The apartment was very unsatisfactory.
Write a letter of complaint to the manager of the agency from which you rented
the apartment. In your letter,
– give details of the things that were unsatisfactory
– explain the reactions of the members of your family
– ask the manager what he/she is going to do about the situation
You should write at least 150 words.
Dear Sir / Madam,
My family and I have just recently been a guest at Seaside Resort in a rented
apartment. Even though the view overlooking the sea was lovely, several things in
the apartment were missing or unsatisfactory and I would like to use this
opportunity to explain the problems leading to this complaint.
First of all, the wooden steps leading up to the door of the apartment did not meet
official security standards: one step broke when my husband carried our luggage
up, leaving him with a bruised leg, and two other steps were also dangerously close
to breaking apart in the middle. Additionally, when my children wanted to put away
their clothes in the available cupboards, one of the planks broke loose, hitting my
younger son and scaring both children. Finally, the kitchen did not have enough
cutlery, let alone cups, and the sink in the bathroom only worked after my husband
worked on it.
As you can see, the condition of the apartment was unsatisfactory in many ways,
and I would therefore like to ask for a discount of thirty per cent of the price we
paid for the rent. I hope this feedback was useful to you and will help to make
Seaside Resort a better place for tourists in the future. Please report back to me
regarding your plans of how to deal with this situation!
Yours sincerely,
Mrs. Angela Driftwood

You and your neighbours have noticed that the rubbish collection services where
you live have
recently been quite bad.
Write a letter to your local council. In your letter,
– explain what you have recently experienced
– explain what the neighbours have recently experienced
– ask what action will be taken to improve the service

Dear Sir / Madam,

My name is Amanda Rosewell and I am a resident of the city of Harpley. I am writing
this letter in my name and on behalf of my neighbours on Bristwood Avenue, as we
have experienced very poor rubbish collection services recently.
For around three months, the trash I put out at my gate on the correct day is only
collected irregularly, and when it is, some is left behind. My neighbours have had
similar experiences, if not worse, with one woman not having her rubbish collected
for eight weeks and another family dealing with unfriendly and incompetent
rubbish collectors. Apparently, their waste container was broken by the harsh
handling of the collectors, and the family’s children have been scared by their
unfriendly comments.
Although I have called the rubbish collection service hotline, the company’s
employees have not taken my complaint seriously and nothing has changed the
current situation. I would therefore like to ask what you as the local city council can
do in order to improve this state of affairs, as the rubbish collection services do not
react to any feedback from dissatisfied citizens.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Amanda Rosewell

You recently travelled by train on a long journey and you experienced various
problems. Write a
letter to the train company’s head office.
In your letter,
– give the details of your journey, including the date, time and where you sat
– explain the problems that happened and express your dissatisfaction
– ask about what action will be taken to improve the service
Dear Sir / Madam,
Last week on the twenty-first of May, I travelled from Rome to Berlin as a passenger
on the train Express 302, presumably under your management. I experienced
several inconveniences and problems throughout the long and strenuous journey,
and I would like to make an official complaint.
Firstly, the train was delayed one hour due to a malfunction with the doors. In
addition to this, the train had to stop several times throughout the trip for a lengthy
amount of time due to other technological problems. As a result, I arrived in Berlin
three hours later than initially planned, which drastically changed my personal
schedule. Secondly, the train was severely overbooked, and I was switched from
first class to second class, where I was made to sit among a loud and obnoxious
family. Contrary to what was advertised, there was no Internet available, and I was
unable to complete some important business. Finally, when I went to complain
calmly about the situation, the on-train personnel were unnecessarily rude.
I hope that you can appreciate that I have had a terrible experience with your
company, and I look forward to reading in your reply about what action you intend
to take.
Yours faithfully,

Write a letter to your neighbour requesting that something be done about the dog.
Include in your letter:
- Your reason for writing
- What you would like to happen
- A nice, respectful style

Dear Sir and Madame,

I am a nearby resident currently attending university. I am pursuing a degree in
mathematics, and my course material is very difficult to understand. I have to
spend many hours studying for exams and working through practice problems.
Unfortunately, due to the ongoing barking from the dog in your house, it is very
difficult for me to concentrate.
I am writing to ask if there is anything you can do to help reduce the barking,
especially during the later hours. It is difficult for me to sleep because of the
barking. I hope that this letter does not offend you, as I am only trying to get myself
some comfort at home to aid me in my studies. If you would like to further discuss
this, please contact me at your convenience. I hope we can resolve this smoothly.
Thank you and take care.
Sincerely,

Write a letter to the retailer to complain. In the letter:
- Explain why you are unhappy
- Request a refund
- Make arrangements to return the damaged item

Dear Sir or Madam,

I recently ordered a Kitchenmax blender from your online shop, and was
disappointed to discover that the glass portions of the appliance had been smashed
during transit.
I would have expected the package to be wrapped more effectively in order to
avoid incidents such as this, but there was almost no padding material in the box. I
would like you to arrange for the return of the item and to process a full refund as
soon as is convenient, since the blender was intended to be a gift for an occasion
that has already passed. The order number was KX3564686, and it was delivered
on 24/09/2017.
If you need to book a time for a courier to collect the parcel, you can contact me at
this email address, but it must be within the next two weeks as I will be moving to
Washington.
Kind regards,

Write a letter to your internet service provider to complain. In the letter:
- Describe the problem and why you are unhappy
- Arrange for an engineer to visit your home
- Request a reduction in your bill

Dear Sir or Madam,

I have been a satisfied customer of yours for over a year, but recently my
connection has become intermittent. Even when it is working, it is so slow that it is
unusable.
I have actually informed your customer service department of this via phone on
two separate occasions, and the problem has now been ongoing for around ten
weeks. I would like to request that an engineer be sent to my property since all
attempts to resolve the issue remotely have failed. If you could contact me at this
email address to arrange a suitable time, that would be great.
Furthermore, since I have not received the advertised service for two-and-a-half
months, I do not believe I should be charged for this period. The amount equates
to £98.49; I will accept either a payment or a reduction in the total of future bills.
I hope we can resolve this situation promptly.

A reporter complained about a new TV program that you like. Write a letter to the
newspaper editor.
- Describe your point of view.
- Say what you like about the show and why.
- Ask the newspaper to take some action.
You should write at least 150 words.

Dear Mr Bradshaw,
I am contacting you regarding the article where you unfairly criticized Top Gear,
namely Jeremy Clarkson. Understandably Mr Clarkson is not everyone's cup of tea,
however publicly complaining then lambasting him and the show is unfair. Their
difference of opinion is under no circumstances an excuse to write a letter of
complaint.
Personally I feel that the shows ingenuity largely stems from the fact that their
presenters are occasionally controversial and honest. This is unlike the modern TV
shows which are bland, politically correct and just lacking any entertainment value
for my liking.
I would be very grateful if you could in future editions of your newspaper 'The Echo'
only publish positive articles about the programme. Failing this small request could
you please refrain from any undue negative press.
Kind Regards,
B. Worthington

You have just returned from a holiday. You are unhappy with the quality of the
hotel you stayed in and want to complain to the travel agency that arranged the
holiday.
Write a letter to the manager of the travel agency. In your letter,
• say about the holiday and where you stayed
• mention why you are unhappy about the hotel where you stayed
• say what you would like the travel agency to do

Dear Sir or Madam,

I understand that no business likes to hear these kinds of things from their
customers, but sometimes, we just can not help but complain about the poor or
bad service.
I am not too happy about the hotel that you booked for me recently. The name of
the Hotel was “Concordia Hotel”, located in the city of Lisbon, and I was supposed
to stay there from 5th to 9th June, to enjoy my new year’s holiday that was
arranged by you.
Unfortunately, I had to check out of the hotel after spending only two nights there
because of some unpleasant experience. First of all, I did not find the hotel rooms
to be clean enough for the prices I paid. It had a bad odour that made me irritated
as long as I stayed there. Moreover, the hotel did not offer me any free shuttle
service anywhere in the city even though that is exactly what I was told.
I did not get the services that I was promised by your travel agency. So, it is only
fair that I get a full refund of the money that I paid for the hotel charges.
I hope to hear from you soon regarding this.
Yours faithfully,

You have bought some clothing online and are not satisfied with your purchase.
Write an email to the company that you bought the clothing from. In your email,
• give details of the purchase
• describe the problem
• explain why you need a replacement urgently

Dear Sir or Madam,

Last week I bought some t-shirts and trousers from your online store, but I just do
not think that I am fully satisfied with the purchase I made. The purchase included
four t-shirts and three pairs of trousers which I was planning to use later as my
summer outfits. I used my credit card to pay for those clothing items, and the online
receipt number is GA- 5487.
Two of the t-shirts were supposed to be of a round-neck collar while the other two
were supposed to have a regular collar. But, when they arrived, I found all of those
t-shirts to have round-neck collars. Not only that but also they were not in the
colours that I chose when ordering them. In fact, I wanted two of them to be of
light navy blue colour and the remaining two black, but they all came out to be
regular blue, instead. As for the trousers, two of them seem to be smaller sizes than
what I actually ordered.
So, please replace them at your earliest convenience because I do not really have
any decent summer dresses to use this coming summer. If I do not hear from you
within the next seven days, I would be forced to lodge a complaint to the
"Consumer Rights Commission" office.
Thank you in advance.

You visit a sports centre regularly, and there is a problem with the changing rooms
in it. You have complained about it several times but with no success.
Write a letter to the manager of the sports centre. In your letter,
• describe what the problem with the changing rooms is
• say what happened the last time you complained
• explain what you want the manager to do

Dear Sir or Madam,

In recent weeks, we have found some issues with your otherwise well-managed
sports centre, and I just thought that it was the time to bring those problems to
your attention to ensure the reputation of your famous sports centre and the
comfort of its users.
Now, let me explain the issues one by one. The first issue is that some of the doors
of the changing rooms do not lock properly - probably because the lock systems
have worn out or become old due to excessive use. Another problem is that
sometimes, a foul smell hits us as soon as we enter those rooms either because
they are not cleaned properly or do not get properly “deodorized”.
Of course, I have already complained to the supervisor, in charge of the
maintenance of your sports centre, a couple of times, but it looks like the issues
have not exactly been addressed or solved. The last time I complained to him was
two months ago, and despite his promise to fix the issues, nothing significant has
been done.
Therefore, I would appreciate it if you take the necessary steps to solve the
problems, mentioned above, at your earliest convenience so that we all can get
back to enjoying our time at your establishment, again, like we always did in the
past.
Yours faithfully,
Miranda Blake

Write a letter to the authority of the building. In your letter,
• describe the situation
• explain the problems it is causing you
• propose a solution to the problem

Dear Sir or Madam,

I live on the north side of your Daffodil apartment complex, Building 4, flat 5-D,
next to the lake, and I am writing this letter to inform you about a problem that I
have been facing lately.
Actually, the issue is that one of my next-door neighbours has been causing this
problem by playing loud music till very late at night. I do not exactly mind this kind
of noise once in a while, especially if they are heard during the weekend or holidays.
But it has become a cause of concern, to say the least, as it pretty much an every
night thing and prevents me from having a good-night sleep. And, as you perhaps
know, how sloppy and slow one becomes at work without proper sleep at night. I,
of course, have tried to reason with my neighbour on multiple occasions by telling
him about my sleep problem, but he just does not seem to care about my concern
at all.
Therefore, I would like to request you to intervene to solve this problem as a person
of authority so that I can have some good sleep, at least, during the weekdays.
Yours faithfully,

You are living in a University residence, and you have a problem with the high levels
of noise from a new campus restaurant which is open until midnight.
Write a letter to the governor of the University. In your letter,
• complain about the situation
• say why this is a problem
• and propose ways to reduce the noise

Dear Mr Oliver,
I am writing this letter regarding the incessant noise that comes from the new
canteen that has recently opened near my University residence. Although I am
delighted that we have this facility that offers tremendous benefits to students, the
restaurant remains open up to midnight, and as a result, there is considerable
talking, shouting, music, and the loud sound of motorbikes continuing until about
12:30 each night.
This causes me and my neighbours in the residence a serious quandary because at
that time we are either trying to sleep, study or complete an assignment. The noise
is so deafening that it is quite impossible to sleep. The sound and the commotion
disturb us and hamper our sleep at night, making us tired in the mornings or
affecting the progress of our studies or assignment. I am sure you will comprehend
that this is a very worrying situation for us all.
To prevent further complications, I would like to suggest that the campus
authorities restrict the canteen’s opening hours from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm. I
propose that we also put up some signs reminding users to be considerate and keep
their noise to an absolute minimum. I hope you would take the initiative to
implement them to save us from the nuisance.
Thank you in advance for your attention to this important matter.
Yours sincerely,
Robert Blake

You are studying a short course in another country. Your accommodation was
arranged by the course provider. But there is a major problem with the
accommodation.
Write a letter to the course provider. In your letter,
• say what the problem is
• describe the accommodation you thought you were getting
• ask the provider to solve the problem
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am Graham Neelam, a participant in the Effective Recruiting Management Course
that your university has organised. I am writing this letter to you to complain about
some inconveniences that I am facing with the room that I was allotted to stay in
during my course.
Before I joined the course, I applied for single-room accommodation in writing. I
also mentioned that I would prefer to stay near the university, not far away from
it. Unfortunately, I was given a shared room that I have been sharing with another
student for the last couple of weeks. Moreover, it is at least 35 minutes walking
distance from the building where our classes are conducted.
The room is not large enough to support the healthy living of two persons, and its
ventilation system is dreadful. Fresh air and sunlight can hardly get in. The room is
crowded with two beds, two desks, and it does not have adequate space. On top
of that, my roommate has frequent visitors who often stay overnight. It interrupts
my studies and privacy.
I thought I was getting a single room with enough sunlight and airflow and which
would not be far away from the campus. Instead, a shared accommodation was
arranged for me that has a poor ventilation system. So I would highly appreciate it
if you could arrange for me a single and large room that has a proper ventilation
system and enough airflow. The room I need should be conducive to healthy living
and serious study.
I look forward to getting your support regarding this matter. Thank you in advance.
Yours faithfully,
Graham Neelam

Some construction work is being done on the street where you live for the last
couple of days. The noise from the work is loud and it disturbs you.
Write a letter to your local council complaining about the noise. In your letter,
• introduce yourself
• explain how the noise is causing problems to you
• suggest solutions to the problem

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to formally lodge a complaint about the uncomfortable, and
sometimes unbearable, noise which keeps coming from the ongoing road
construction works in the adjacent areas to my house.
To introduce myself a little, my name is Nicholas Fauci, and I live on Lindsay Street,
next to Fairmont Shopping Centre in the Hampshire area.
The road repair works, I am talking about, has been going on for almost one week
with the use of heavy vehicles and construction tools, from morning to late night,
sometimes. Naturally, the continuous sounds, generated by heavy machinery and
tools, are causing a lot of trouble for many residents in our neighbourhood. Some
people in our area are already complaining about a bad headache. The school-going
children are also struggling to concentrate on their studies. Not to mention, of
course, the trouble with sleeping has also become a major concern for many
residents in our locality because of the noises.
As a solution to this ongoing problem, I would like to request you to employ
additional manpower to finish the construction works as soon as possible and save
us from the trouble of these unbearable noises.
Yours faithfully,
Nicholas Fauci

emerged in your apartment since the last repair.
Write a letter to your landlord.
In your letter,
• give details of the last repair work
• what the problems are now
• how you would like the landlord to solve these problems

Dear Mr Daniel,
I am writing this letter to remind you about some emergency repair works that
need to be carried out at the flat I am living in.
The last time you did the repair work in the kitchen, one of the bathrooms and two
windows was almost two years ago. The repair work was done very professionally,
and except for the kitchen, other works still look new.
However, this time, other problems have emerged, and I have detected a few leaks
in the kitchen which need to be fixed immediately. The paint has started to come
off, and I am not sure when was the last time the flat was painted. Besides, there
is water logging in the drain pipes and it is causing great inconvenience for me.
I would greatly appreciate it if you could arrange for these repairs and paint works
as soon as possible by hiring a professional service as you did before. Please contact
me on my mobile phone to make arrangements for the work to start.
Thank you in advance for your support.

You are not happy about a service you received a couple of days ago from a

Write a letter to the company to complain about the poor service you received
from its employee.
In your letter, express:
• why you went to the shop/office
• how the employees behaved to offend you
• what you expect the company to do

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to register a complaint with you regarding poor service, and the rude
attitude by your staff that I experienced last Monday when I visited your shop. I am
hoping you would take proper steps so that no other customer feels humiliated the
way I did.
I went to your shop on Monday, 24th November, with the intention of purchasing
a microwave oven for my home. While I was in your shop, not a single employee
approached and offered me any assistance! They were watching a soap opera on
the television and were fully focused on the show. I decided to ask one of the
employees for help but he showed no interest to help me. He was actually rude
when I asked him what type of microwave ovens were available in the shop and if
he could assist me. He pointed out his finger to another employee and this gesture
was extremely awkward. I was not there to ask a favour, rather, to purchase a
product and the unprofessional employees you have are surely going to cost your
business.
I regret to have been in your shop and will never be there. However, you should
know how poorly your staff treats your customers. I am hoping you would take the
proper initiative to offer a better customer experience in the future by hiring more
professional employees.
Yours faithfully,

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to complain about a Wireless Router that I purchased from your store
a few months ago. Unfortunately, it has suddenly stopped working and I am unable
to connect to the Internet and work from home. I am hoping that you would replace
or repair it immediately.
The Netgear - AC1750 Dual-Band Wi-Fi Router that I purchased from you was
operational until the end of last week but it is not working at the moment. I cannot
find out the exact reason why the device is malfunctioning, but I have tried to do
some initial diagnostics without any luck. I tried a similar router that I borrowed
from a friend and it worked as expected.
I work from home as a freelancer and my work depends on an uninterrupted

to retain my client base. As you can see, I am totally dependent on this equipment
to get connected to the Internet, so I need to get this router fixed immediately. I
suggest that you either replace the device with a new one or repair it within the
next two days.
Thank you for giving the matter your attention and I hope to hear your reply soon.

People in your area are having problems with their internet connection. Write a
letter to the company which provides the connection.
In your letter,
• describe the problems
• explain how it is affecting people
• say what the company should do to help

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my discontent with the internet connection that your
company provides in our area. The disruptive internet connection is causing a great
problem for us, and I am hoping that you would resolve it as soon as possible.
Your company is supposed to provide technology that guarantees an uninterrupted
internet connection. However, this does not seem to be the case. For the last
couple of weeks, we have been experiencing extremely slow connectivity, and
sometimes the internet is totally inaccessible. During peak hours, the internet
speed is as slow as a few KB per second only!
Many people in our area, including my husband, work from home, and a disruptive
internet connection means they are unable to work. Due to poor connectivity, they
can not send finished assignments to their clients on time. Frequent disconnections
also affect people who do video conferencing online. Besides, we are often unable
to do online shopping, send important emails and pay utility bills online.
I expected that your staff would deal with the situation with utmost importance
without any delay, but no meaningful action was taken so far. So, please send your
staff to come over and check if you need to install new cables since they might be
fairly old. Take any other measure necessary to resolve the slow connectivity.
We are expecting a prompt resolution from you.

road.
In your letter:
• introduce yourself

• and suggest what they should do

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am Cory Gardner, a local resident of Ipswich, Queensland, Australia, writing on
behalf of the residents of the area to notify you about a dilapidated road which is
causing unbearable misery for us.
I work at a local school and teach mathematics to young students. This is the first
time I am writing to the municipal office to complain about something. Park Street,
the only road we use to get off and in, from the community, was damaged around
three months ago when we had a heavy downpour for a week. The roads have
many holes, and crumbly places, and are below usable condition with uneven
flagstones.
We expectantly waited for a month when a team of engineers inspected the road
in July. But nothing has been done so far to alleviate our suffering.
I would request you to send a team to probe the condition of the road and take
immediate action to have it repaired. We already have had some minor accidents
in the past months and would like you to prevent a major one.
Yours faithfully,
Cory Gardner

Dear Sir or Madam,

Eight days ago I ordered a smart TV, a mobile phone and some accessories from
your outlet. I was excited when I ordered these items and got your assurance that
I would receive them in three days, but I am very disappointed not to receive them
yet. I am hoping that you will complete the shipment by tomorrow.
In relation to the specifics of the order, I purchased a Sony smart TV, a Samsung
mobile phone, a screen protector, a memory card and a pocket router from your
outlet 'Gadget and Goods' on July 18th. I paid using my Visa Credit card. The order
number is 8683201 and I am attaching a copy of my receipt.
Since you did not have the specific model of the TV and silver colour mobile phone
at your outlet, you agreed to send the items to my home address before 21st July.
Unfortunately, eight days have already elapsed, and I did not hear from you. Please
explain the reason for this delay.

you will send my products by tomorrow. Otherwise, I would like to cancel my order.
I will contact my bank to reverse the credit card payment if I do not hear back from
you in regard to this within a day.
Thank you for giving the matter your attention and I hope to hear your reply soon.

You have just bought a new mobile phone from a website on the internet. When it
was delivered, the phone was faulty.
Write a letter to the company. In the letter:
• introduce yourself
• explain the situation
• state what action you want to be taken

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am Wesley Phillip from Boston, USA, writing to inform you that, three days ago, I
ordered a Samsung Galaxy A23 smartphone from your online store. I was excited
when it arrived earlier today but very disappointed to find that the product was
faulty and not the one I ordered! I am hoping you will replace it immediately.
In relation to the specifics of the order, I purchased this mobile phone through your
website called Phone and Gadgets on July 17th using my PayPal account. The order
number is 56900145, and I am attaching a copy of my receipt.
The issue with the phone is that the front camera does not work, and the internal
memory is 64 GB, though I ordered a 128 GB phone. The description of the item on
your website clearly shows it is a 128 GB phone, so I am sure this is a mistake made
on your side while dispatching the product.
As a solution, and because I really like this specific model, I am hoping that you will
agree to replace the phone according to the specification of the order. Otherwise,
I would like a full refund and I will be contacting PayPal complaints if I do not hear
back from you in regards to this within a week.
Thank you for giving the matter your attention and I hope to hear your reply soon.

• introduce yourself
• explain the situation
• say what action you would like the company to take

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to draw your attention to a problem with the car I hired from your
company, Phillip Car Rental, City Center branch in Colombo, on 24th November. I
rented it for a month and paid fifteen days' rent upfront. The cooling system of the
car stopped working the day after I rented it and even after my written complaint,
it has not been sorted out. I am hoping that you would either fix it or replace it with
a good one.
I am a regular customer of Phillip Car Rental company - registered customer
number CCR321 and this time I took a Toyota Corolla car. During the time of hiring,
the car was working fine. However, on the next day, while travelling to the airport
to drop off my uncle, I felt the air condition was not working properly and now it is
completely dead. I brought this issue to your office a week ago and was promised
an immediate solution. Nevertheless, the issue is yet to be resolved.
According to the rental agreement, I am entitled to have a solution to this problem.
I would be grateful if you could repair the air conditioning system of the car within
the next 24 hours or replace it with another one. Otherwise, I would have to
register a complaint to the consumer rights authority.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.

• why you are writing to them
• why you think the insurance amount should not be increased
• what you want them to do

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing in response to a letter that I received recently stating that my insurance
premium would increase from July 2020. I do not believe the increase is rational
and hence would like you to reconsider it.
I have been managing my car insurance with your company for the last 8 years and
my insurance policy number is 8101023457-115-2. My monthly premium is already
higher than that of some of my colleagues and relatives. The 20% increase in
monthly insurance payment is not acceptable because I am already paying higher
and no other notable insurance company has raised their premium recently.
Inflating the premium, especially at a time of recession, goes against the insurance
holders' interest. I would really appreciate it if you could write me back with an
explanation of why such an increase is needed when others have not done so. I
would request you to reconsider the decision, otherwise, I am afraid I will have to
move my car insurance policy to another company.
I am looking forward to receiving your reply as soon as possible.
Yours faithfully,
Sonia Vincent

Write a letter to your college administration department complaining about the
college facility.
In your letter, include:
• what the problem is
• how this problem has affected you
• what the college should do to fix this problem

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am a third-year accounting major student in your college and I am writing to you
regarding a problem that I have encountered several times over the past few weeks
in our football ground. I am hoping that you would take steps to solve the matter
immediately.
In relation to the issue, our football team is preparing for the upcoming
competition against FC College, and the training is very hard - both mentally and
physically. Hence we sometimes get very lethargic towards the end of our training
sessions. But I am extremely alarmed at the fact that the faucet at the ground
appears to be out of order, therefore, my teammates and I can’t quench our thirsts
during and after the practice. Because of this, I suffered from dehydration a few
days ago and had to be rushed to the hospital.
My intention in writing this letter to you is to ask for a working condition faucet for
drinking water so that we can carry on our practice sessions without risking our
health.
Expecting your kind attention and prompt action regarding this.
Yours sincerely,
Sameed Qureshi

You booked a two-week holiday to Sydney with a tour agency. You are not happy
with the holiday – the flight was delayed, the hotel was noisy, and so on.
Write to the tour agency to complain about the holiday giving details about the
problems. Request some compensation or refund.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Two months ago I booked a tour package from your agency and travelled to Sydney
on 23rd July I was excited when I booked the tour but very disappointed to find
that your agency did not keep its promises. I am hoping you will probe the issue
and refund me the $780 that I had to spent personally due to the mismanagement
by your employees.
In relation to the specifics of the package I opted in, I booked the exclusive two-
week-long tour package to Sydney on May 12th and paid $2800 in cash. I am
attaching a copy of my receipt and confirmation slip with this letter. The package
includes a fortnight tour to Sydney inclusive of roundtrip flights, four-star hotel
accommodation, tour guides, breakfasts, sightseeing tours and a few other
recreational activities.
The issue with the tour is that we did not get the services we were promised. The
departure flight your agency booked were delayed for almost 3 hours and landed
at a different airport than assured. On top of that, we were taken to a two-star
hotel and the quality of its service was below standard. I did not pay for a two-star
hotel and want an explanation of this mismanagement and false claim.
As a solution, and because I do not want to start a legal fight if you are willing to
take action, I am hoping that you will agree to refund me the $780 that I was forced
to spend. If I do not hear back from you in regards to this within a week, I will be
forced to take legal actions, which by all means I would like to avoid with your
cooperation.
Thank you for giving the matter your attention and I hope to hear your reply soon.

The local government is planning to change the bus timetable. You are not happy
about the proposed changes. You have decided to write about it to the editor of a
local newspaper.
Write a letter to the newspaper. In the letter,
• describe the changes
• explain how that will affect you
• say how you would like the service to be improved

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am a local resident of Bexley, London writing to express my concerns regarding
the suggested changes in the bus timetable by the local government. I hope you
would publish an editorial regarding the inconveniences these changes are going
to cause to the local people.
In relation to the proposed changes, the authority is planning to reduce the
frequency of the bus on routes 25 and 28. The current frequency of the bus is every
20 minutes, however, the local administration plans to cut down the frequency to
a bus to one in an hour. Moreover, the first bus will depart at 7.00 am rather than
6.00 am.
As you can understand, such drastic changes to the schedule will adversely affect
the commuters. Currently, I have to report to work at 7:00 am, therefore, I board
the bus that arrives at 6.00 am. If the current timetable were to change, I will face
great difficulties in getting to work on time.
In my opinion, the bus frequency needs to be increased rather than decreased, so
that the travellers who have to leave for work before sunrise can be accommodated
in a better way. Further, I would suggest that the transport authority should also
consider replacing the older buses to improve the overall travel experience.
I hope you will publish my concerns in your newspaper so that people can express
their opinion on this and the proposed changes are reconsidered.
Yours faithfully,
Muhammad Sameed

You have rented a four-bedroom house, which you share with two other students.
However, there are several problems with this house that need fixing. You also find
it expensive and would like to find another student to share the spare bedroom.
Write a letter to the real estate agency. In the letter
• explain your situation
• describe the problems with the house
• say what you would like to happen

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am a resident of your District Sign property, writing to notify you that the central
heating system in our house is inadequate and our flat needs some renovation
works. I am hoping that you would arrange to fix these issues urgently and let me
take a new roommate to reduce the cost.
I have been living in one of your houses for the last eight months. I have been
sharing this house with two other students. However, we regret to say that the
central heating system is ineffectual and this needs an immediate fix as the
temperature is below 4 degrees now. Besides, minor dilapidation is visible in some
parts of the house and the damp bathroom needs some professional works. I am
not sure when was the last time the flat got an inspection from the safety bureau
and you should do that promptly. Finally, the house needs a fresh touch of painting.
I would like to inform you that we have a spare bedroom that we would like to rent
out to a student. The rent we share is a bit expensive. I hope you would not mind
if we take an extra person to share the rent.

Your neighbours have a dog that is noisy at night. You can’t sleep due to this.
Write a letter to your neighbours. In your letter:
• describe the problem with the dog
• explain why it is important for you to sleep
• outline what your neighbours could do about the situation

Dear Mr and Mrs Donald,

I am Beth Scarlet, your next-door neighbour, writing to express my concern about
the noise your dog makes at night. I intended to write to you a few days ago but
waited patiently with the hope that the dog would stop barking loudly at night and
will save me from writing a letter that sounds like a complaint letter. I am hoping
that you would resolve the issue.
For more than a week your dog has been yelping aloud at night and I have no idea
why! Just when I send my daughter to her bed, who is a school-goer and try to close
my eyes, I can hear the deafening noise and this deters me from falling asleep. I
have to get up before 6.00 am to prepare breakfast for my family, then take my
daughter to her school and finally drive to my office. Interrupted sleep or lack of
sound sleep leaves me dizzy the next day and this hurts my performance in my
office.
You are great neighbours in every aspect and I am sure you will feel my stress
regarding this. I do not own a pet and cannot advise you what should be done but
I guess taking the dog to a specialist might be a good idea.
Yours sincerely,
Beth Scarlet

You are unhappy about a plan to make your local airport bigger and increase the
number of flights. You live near the airport.
Write a letter to your local newspaper. In your letter,
• explain where you live
• describe the problem
• give reasons why you do not want this development

Dear Sir or Madam,

As a local resident, I would like to protest the development of our local airport as it
would bring many negative consequences. I am writing to request you to publish
an editorial in your newspaper regarding the problems the expansion of the local
airport would cause.
I live near the Bogra International Airport where more than two thousand citizens,
including children and older people, reside. Living near the airport is already
difficult as harsh noises are frequent, especially at night when the aeroplanes land
or depart the runway. If the number of flights is increased, the noise will become
unbearable. This could result in immense distress to the people. Besides, it would
worsen the traffic condition of the adjacent roads.
Moreover, the airport authority wants to expand the area; so our lovely park, which
is essential for every citizen of this locality, will be diminished. Due to this, everyone
in our locality is against this proposed development. If you agree with me, please
publish an editorial in your newspaper to disagree with this unnecessary and
detrimental development.
I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours faithfully,

You were hurt in a minor accident inside a supermarket, and you wish to complain
to the supermarket.
Write a letter to the manager of the supermarket. In your letter
• say who you are
• give details about the accident
• suggest how the supermarket could prevent similar accidents

Dear Sir or Madam,

Two days ago I went to your supermall to do some shopping and got injured in a
minor accident. I am writing to inform you how this accident took place and what
you can do to prevent such accidents in the future. I am hoping that you would take
steps so that no other shopper fall victim to similar incidents.
I am Shahin Shah and I live a few blocks away from your supermall. I have been a
loyal customer of your business for more than 4 years.
In relation to the specifics of the event, I went to your store to buy some fresh
vegetables and fruits on 27th September at around 7:30 pm. Just after I took a
shopping cart, a woman with her groceries collided with me. I cannot say that it
was entirely her fault as she was over 70 years old and sufficient light was not
present at that corner of the mall. In addition, the floor was slippery. So, this
unavoidable accident occurred as the lack of attention by your management.
Though this was a minor accident, it could have been worse!
Hundreds of people, including children and senior citizens go shopping at your mall
every day. It is your responsibility to maintain this place to avoid such a mishap.
Please arrange more electric bulbs at that corner of your shop and dry the wet floor
immediately to avoid unexpected accidents.
I hope you will give immediate attention to this matter.

Dear Ms Linda,
I am a tenant in one of your properties in William Street, Norwood. I am writing
this letter to bring your attention to some of the substandard furniture that you
have provided as part of our rental agreement. I am hoping that you would either
fix them or replace them with new ones.
In relation to the specifics, I live in apartment 17B with my family for the last 4
months. We were excited when we moved into this apartment but disappointed
when we found that a couple of furniture and appliances were old and torn down.
The sofa set in the living room has the worst condition. The colour of the cushion
has faded out and they are not usable. The coffee table has a broken leg. Besides,
the refrigerator in the kitchen does not maintain the desired temperature
accurately and the grocery cupboard door locks are missing. Overall, some of the
furniture and stuff you have provided are in faulty conditions.
I request you to look into this matter urgently. I recommend you kindly arrange for
the repair and maintenance of the living room furniture and replace the fridge. New
keys for the cupboard can be prepared by a locksmith. I expect your action on this
as soon as possible, as these problems are affecting our living and well-being.

You bought a new HD television last week. At first, it seemed to work perfectly but
after a few hours a line appeared across the TV and the sound seemed a little
strange. You cannot take the TV back to the shop so you have decided to write to
them.
Write a letter of complaint to the shop. In your letter,
• give them the background information
• describe the problem
• ask them to resolve the issue

Dear Mr Bruce,
Three days ago I purchased an LG smart television from your store. I was excited
when I bought it from your store but very disappointed to find that only after a few
hours, the product malfunctioned. I am sure it was poorly produced and I am
hoping you would send someone to my house to check it and then replace it.
In relation to the specifics of the order, I purchased a 54-inch LG smart HD TV from
your brand shop located in the Tandridge District on August 14th using my Visa
credit card. The order number is 5874210 and I am attaching a copy of my receipt.
The issue with the TV is that a black line appears across the TV screen. Though it
disappears after a while, it emerges again if the TV is on for a couple of hours.
Moreover, the sound quality is strange and it has nothing to do with the audio
settings. The TV is now unusable and I’m sure this is a manufacturing flaw.
As a solution, and because I really like the functionality of this television, I am
hoping that you will agree to send someone to my house to check it and then
replace it with a new one. Otherwise, I would like a full refund.
Thank you for giving the matter your attention and I hope to hear your reply soon.

You have been living in a rental apartment for the past year. Recently a new
neighbour moved in and has been making a lot of noise, which disturbs you.
Write a letter to the landlord. In your letter:
• explain the situation
• describe why it bothers you
• suggest a solution

Dear Mr Hudson,
I am Elizabeth Beth, your tenant in apartment C1-5. I am writing to notify you of
the unbearable noise the new tenant of C1-3 is making which I have endured for
the last couple of days with patience. I am hoping that you would talk to this
neighbour and settle the issue.
I consider myself lucky to have some great neighbours and never complained to
you about any disturbance. However, the new resident on C1-3 is making life
tougher for me. They moved in two weeks ago and I am already forced to write you
this complaint letter. They have parties almost every day and play music at a higher
volume. I go to bed at around 10.30 pm only to wake up again by the loud noise
from their flat. I am not sure if this is something I should mention but the family
members have nasty quarrels and they do not keep it inside their house. I live with
a teenage daughter and a husband who are equally agitated.
I think it would be inappropriate for me to personally intervene, and that is why I
am relying on you for a solution. You should talk to other tenants on the same floor
and get to know what really is happening. You have the authority to talk to the
tenant of C1-3 and try to solve the problem. Otherwise, I would be forced to shift
to a new residence.
Expecting your cooperation in this regard.
Yours sincerely,
Elizabeth Beth

order number is 9542105 and I am attaching a copy of my receipt.
The issue with the radio is that I am unable to tune in to any FM radio channel and
the sound quality is poor. I’m sure this is a manufacturing flaw.
As a solution, and because I really like the model and functionality of this radio, I
am hoping that you will agree to repair the issues or provide me with a fresh one.
Otherwise, I would like a full refund and I will be contacting the Consumer Rights
Bureau if I do not hear back from you in regards to this within a week.
Thank you for giving the matter your attention and I hope to hear your reply soon.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation and I would like you to take the necessary
measure so that it does not repeat in the future.

You live in an area where the local council has made some changes to regulations.
You believe these changes are not good for the residents.
Write a letter to a councillor. In your letter:
• introduce yourself
• describe the problem
• say what you think the council should do about the situation

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am Patrick Moon, a resident of Cabourne, Lincolnshire and a medical doctor by
profession. I am writing to express my opposing views on the recent changes that
the council have applied recently. I hope you would reconsider the imposed
changes as they are against the people's interests.
The decision to restrict public entry to Central Lincolnshire Park is not acceptable
to most of the residents. Many residents, with whom I have talked in the past
weeks, feel very negatively regarding the council's decision. Moreover, the council
has decided to impose a weekly subscription fee for the public library access which
I believe is not a good move considering a large number of student members.
The 'Central Lincolnshire Park' is a place where local residents can freely walk, meet
others, enjoy the scenic beauty of mother nature and play with children. It should
be open to all. Moreover, the library access should be free to students while you
can expect some membership fees from other readers. Please reconsider the
changes that have been recently made as they are in no way helping people which
is one of the important responsibilities of the council.
I would really appreciate it if you analyse the changes and put people's interests
above all.
Yours faithfully,
Patrick Moon

• introduce yourself
• explain the situation
• say what action you would like the company to take

Dear Sir or Madam,

I have recently bought a Samsung digital camera from your showroom. I was
excited to bring it home but disappointed to find that it did not work as expected.
To add more misery, even after I returned it to your store to claim the warranty, I
am yet to hear an update. I am hoping to get my camera replaced by a new one.
I have bought a Samsung NX410 40MP camera from 125 Oxford St, Soho showroom
on 10th December. Unfortunately, it malfunctioned just after I took it home. I
cannot take pictures and it turns off automatically. The very next day, I visited your
showroom and talked to Cynthia, one of your representatives, who assured me that
the camera would be replaced within 24 hours. When I called her again, she told
me that it would take a few more days and would be repaired instead of being
replaced. When I demanded the reason, she failed to answer.
It has been almost a week since I purchased the camera from your store. The faulty
product should be your responsibility, not mine. One of my relatives has advised
me to talk to the Consumer Rights Authority and file a complaint against your
company but I will wait till 24th (the day before Christmas). I am attaching the
receipt of the purchase.
I still believe in your brand reputation. I would like you to take immediate action
against the misconduct I experienced.

success.
Write a letter to the landlord. In your letter:
• state your reason for writing
• describe the problems and explain how you feel
• propose a solution and ask the landlord to take actions

Dear Mr Smith,
I am writing this letter in connection with the non-functional heating system in your
house where we currently reside in. The heating system is not working for more
than a week and a team of men came to fix it but could not do anything. I am hoping
you would call another expert team to have it fixed immediately.
I am a student at the Cherry Blossom school in Brighton and have been residing in
your flat with three other roommates for the last eleven months. As per our rental
agreement, we reported the issue to your designated workmen first. However,
they have failed to fix the problem and have exacerbated the situation by drilling
some holes in the bathroom wall, channels and the cold air freeze us in this intense
winter.
Due to the non-functional heating system, we are unable to control water
temperature, and we are compelled to heat water using gas burners for our daily
domestic use. Similarly, we can't control the room temperature and we are living
with thick winter clothes donned on our bodies round the clock. This is highly
unpleasant and obnoxious to all of us.
In order to fix the issue, once and for all, I suggest engaging a better maintenance
service agency with more skilled professionals than your current workmen. You can
find many such agencies in a newspaper's classified section.
Considering the severity of the issue, I expect your immediate action.
Yours sincerely,

you would replace the faulty product, and improve your customer service as well.
Last week, I purchased a ‘White Line’ blender from your store from your Madison

problems that may arise after taking the product home. Since this purchase had
cost me a small fortune, I have been inordinately stressed about the situation.

of mine with a new one as I have a three-year warranty on this blender. Further, I
expect you to issue a show-cause notice to your salesperson about her coarse
demeanour towards me.
I anticipate prompt remedial action from your side.

Your neighbour keeps a pet in the garden, which causes some problems for you.
You have decided to write to this neighbour about the problems.
Write a letter to your neighbour. In your letter,
• say who you are and why you are writing this letter
• explain the problems
• suggest how to solve the problems

Dear Blake,
I am Barry Sanders, your neighbour of house 25, writing this letter to talk about the
dog that you keep in your garden. I own a dog, and you can understand that I love
pets. But your dog is causing some problems for us. And I waited for more than a
few weeks before writing this letter.
Your dog "Tom" is a nice pet, and when you are around, he creates little commotion
to disturb anybody. But you travel a lot and confer the responsibility to your friend
Hadden to take care of the dog when you are away. However, I do not think that
Hadden is doing a decent job. Tom is often left alone with no adequate food and
water, resulting in her excessive barking, which disturbs me and almost everyone
around the neighbourhood. Hadden does not even come to see the dog and refill
the food and drink pots every day. As a result, Tom barks even more in the early
morning when the food or drink pot is empty.
Therefore, I would like to suggest that you ask Hadden to come and look after Tom
every day and make sure he is taken care of properly. This will be helpful for your
pet as well as us. Please give me a call when you get back from your vacation. We
will discuss this further.
Yours sincerely,
Barry Sanders
